Simulation-based decision support is an important tool in business, science, engineering, and many other areas. Although traditional simulation analysis can be used to generate and test possible plans, it suffers from a long cycle time for model update, analysis and verification. It is thus very difficult to carry out prompt "what-if' analysis to respond to abrupt changes in the physical systems being modeled. Symbiotic simulation has been proposed as a way of solving this problem by having the simulation system and the physical system interact in a mutually beneficial manner. The simulation system benefits from real-time input data which is used to adapt the model and the physical system benefits from the optimized performance that is obtained from the analysis of simulation results. This talk will present a classification of symbiotic simulation systems with examples of applications from the literature. An analysis of these applications reveals some common aspects and issues that are important for symbiotic simulation systems. From this analysis, we have specified an agent-based generic framework for symbiotic simulation. We show that it is possible to identify a few basic functionalities that can be provided by corresponding agents in our framework. These can then be composed together by a specific workflow to form a particular symbiotic simulation system. Finally, the talk will discuss the use of symbiotic simulation as a decision support tool in understanding and steering complex adaptive systems. Some examples of current applications being developed at Nanyang Technological University will be described.

Cloud computing grows rapidly as today's advanced information technology. However, by allowing outsourcing computation on the Cloud, users risk of disclosing privacy and obtaining forged results. These potential threats block sensitive applications to join the Cloud. In this paper, we characterize sensitive applications on the Cloud (SAND) problem and define two critical security requirements: confidentiality and verifiability. The former refers to the protection of sensitive programs/data from disclosing to other users or even the Cloud administrators. The latter concerns with user's capability to verify whether computing results are faithfully calculated. To address SAND, we propose a new Cloud model, Trusted Block as a Service (TBaaS), to provide a confidential and verifiable environment for each sensitive application. TBaaS limits Cloud provider's access of sensitive applications while granting user the ability to verify whether the computation is faithfully carried out. Moreover, it offers high flexibility and low performance overhead.

distributed computing has many opportunities for Modeling and Simulation (M&S). Grid computing approaches have been developed that can use multiple computers to reduce the processing time of an application. In terms of M&S this means simulations can be run very quickly by distributing individual runs over locally or remotely available computing resources. distributed simulation techniques allow us to link together models over a network enabling the creation of large models and/or models that could not be developed due to data sharing or model reuse problems. Using real-world examples, this advanced tutorial discusses how both approaches can be used to benefit M&S researchers and practitioners alike.

Agent-based crowd simulation has been widely applied in the analysis of evacuation safety under disastrous and terrorist circumstances. In crowd simulation, the virtual environment plays an important role in influencing human behavior and defining the scenario. The concepts of informed environment and smart objects have been adopted to improve the realism of the simulation by embedding semantic information in the environment. However, there is no formal approach of using these concepts in crowd simulation. In this paper, we propose a flexible and efficient framework of Intelligent Environment with Smart and Active Objects (IESAO). We properly define different types of entities and interactions, and describe the approach of modeling environment-related behavior in the intelligent environment. This framework gives a new perspective of modeling human behavior in the design phase. An implementation and a case study are discussed to show the flexibility and efficiency of this framework. © 2010 SCS.

This paper presents a tool for the visualization and simulation of automated stowage plan generation for large containership. The stowage plan is generated automatically based on a heuristic algorithm. The allocation algorithm generates different stowage plan in three main stages which includes basic allocation, special container allocation and various stages of stability adjustments. The purpose of this study is to describe how visualization of stowage plan and simulation of allocation sequences can help in the formulation of new and better stowage allocation algorithm.

Evolutionary algorithms can efficiently solve multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs) by obtaining diverse and near-optimal solution sets. However, the performance of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) is often limited by the suitability of their corresponding parameter settings with respect to different optimization problems. The tuning of the parameters is a crucial task which concerns resolving the conflicting goals of convergence and diversity. Moreover, parameter tuning is a time-consuming trial-and-error optimization process which restricts the applicability of MOEAs to provide real-time decision support. To address this issue, we propose a self-adaptive mechanism (SAM) to exploit and optimize the balance between exploration and exploitation during the evolutionary search. This "explore first and exploit later" approach is addressed through the automated and dynamic adjustment of the distribution index of the simulated binary crossover (SBX) operator. Our experimental results suggest that SAM can produce satisfactory results for different problem sets without having to predefine/pre-optimize the MOEA's parameters. SAM can effectively alleviate the tedious process of parameter tuning thus making on-line decision support using MOEA more feasible.

Stowage planning for container vessels concerns the core competence of the shipping lines. As such, automated stowage planning has attracted much research in the past two decades, but with few documented successes. In an ongoing project, we are developing a prototype stowage planning system aiming for large containerships. The system consists of three modules: the stowage plan generator, the stability adjustment module, and the optimization engine. This paper mainly focuses on the stability adjustment module. The objective of the stability adjustment module is to check the global ship stability of the stowage plan produced by the stowage plan generator and resolve the stability issues by applying a heuristic algorithm to search for alternative feasible locations for containers that violate some of the stability criteria. We demonstrate that the procedure proposed is capable of solving the stability problems for a large containership with more than 5000 TEUs.

This paper describes an effective algorithm for generating basic stowage plans of large containership calling at a given number of ports. The algorithm applies an efficient block-based container allocation heuristic method of our previous work and taking into considerations more constraints in the real-world operations of commercial shipping line. The algorithm divides the cargo-space of a large containership into blocks, and assigns groups of containers to different partitions of the ship according to a set of heuristic rules. We present a practical test case and analyze the stowage plan generated by our system based on critical measurements such as the number of re-handles, crane intensity and ship stability.

Generating human-like behaviors for virtual agents has become increasingly important in many applications, such as crowd simulation, virtual training, digital entertainment, and safety planning. One of challenging issues in behavior modeling is how virtual agents make decisions given some time-critical and uncertain situations. In this paper, we present HumDPM, a decision process model for virtual agents, which incorporates two important factors of human decision making in time-critical situations: experience and emotion. In HumDPM, rather than relying on deliberate rational analysis, an agent makes its decisions by matching past experience cases to the current situation. We propose the detailed representation of experience case and investigate the mechanisms of situation assessment, experience matching and experience execution. To incorporate emotion into HumDPM, we introduce an emotion appraisal process in situation assessment for emotion elicitation. In HumDPM, the decision making process of an agent may be affected by its emotional states when: 1) deciding whether it is necessary to do a re-match of experience cases, 2) determining the situational context, and 3) selecting experience cases. We illustrate the effectiveness of HumDPM in crowd simulation. A case study for emergency evacuation in a subway station scenario is conducted, which shows how a varied crowd composition leads to different evacuation behaviors, due to the retrieval of different experiences and the variation of agents' emotional states.

Stowage planning for container ships is a core activity of shipping lines. As the size of containership increases, generating a stowage plan with good safety and stability for a large containership becomes increasingly difficult. In this paper, we present an automated stowage planning system for large containerships which consists of three modules: the stowage plan generator, the safety and stability adjustment module, and the optimization engine. This paper focuses on the safety and stability adjustment module which resolves the stability issues of a stowage plan by adjusting the distribution of container weights by stowing containers in alternative feasible locations and fine-tuning stability parameters through adjusting the ballast in tanks onboard. Using shipping data for a large 7000 TEUs containership on a multi-port voyage, we demonstrate that our system can generate stowage plans with improved safety and stability compared to those generated by experienced planners.
