For many years discrete-event simulation has been used to analyze production and logistics problems in manufacturing and defense. In the early 1980s, visual interactive modelling environments were created that supported the development, experimentation and visualization of simulation models. Today these environments are termed commercial-off-the-shelf simulation packages (CSPs). With the advent of distributed simulation and, later, the high level architecture, the possibility existed to link together these CSPs and their models to simulate larger problems within enterprises (e.g. multiple production lines) and across supply chains. However, the problem of standardizing the use of the HLA and its constituent parts in this domain exists. The solution of this problem is the work of the CSP interoperability product development group (CSPI PDG). Information Service is a key component of a Grid environment and crucial to the operation of a computational Grid. This paper presents an Information Service for a computational Grid Virtual Organization (VO). The main functionality of this Information Service is the provision of information essential for applications running on a computational Grid. This Information Service is a hierarchical structure that consists of VO layer, site layer, and resource layer. We propose different models of information data organization for Information Service, and experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of these models. Based on the experimental results, we further introduce the data organization model for our Information Service. The implementation of the Information Service is based on the Globus Toolkit and complies with the OGSI (Open Grid Services Infrastructure) specifications. An important issue in distributed real-time simulation is to reduce the amount of data transmitted amongst distributed simulation nodes so that the state updates of simulation entities can be sent to other simulation nodes in a timely manner. To address this issue, we have previously proposed a consistency model to determine the update interval of entities based on their relative importance, a utility model to compute the relative importance of entities, and a flexible state update mechanism to ensure updating within these intervals and to balance the number of updates in each simulation frame. In this paper, we focus on the performance evaluation of these timely state update mechanisms. Using a battlefield benchmark, the performance is evaluated in terms of the total amount of data exchanged, the number of simulation frames skipped, and the number of Go-Through-Accidents occurring during the simulation. The performance results indicate that the mechanisms can significantly reduce the bandwidth requirements while maintaining or even improving the consistency of the simulation. © 2005 IEEE.

Multi-Agent Systems (MASs) provide a valuable tool for handling increasing software complexity and supporting rapid and accurate decision making. Various environments for testing, analyzing and developing MASs have been developed. This paper describes an approach to integrating agents into distributed simulations. Using the JADE toolkit and the HLA (High Level Architecture), a general architecture is obtained, where both the high level agent specific services and the underlying middleware comply with international standards. In this paper, we show how an MAS may be used to represent entities in a simulation, focusing on the issue of agent to agent communication, as this is one of the key characteristics of MASs. The causality problem in agent communication is described, and conditions for ensuring consistency are identified. A prototype system has been implemented to demonstrate the feasibility of our solution and some experimental results are presented. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

There are many legacy code applications that cannot be run in grid environment without significant modifications. To avoid reengineering of legacy code, we developed the grid execution management for legacy code architecture (GEMLCA) that enables deployment of legacy code applications as grid services. GEMLCA is an OGSI grid service layer that supports submitting jobs, getting their results and status back. Security requirements are essential to any grid application to preserve the confidentiality and integrity of data. To meet these requirements the GT3 security model was implemented in GEMLCA. The paper introduces GEMLCA and how grid security infrastructure (GSI) components have been added to GEMLCA in order to enable secure execution of jobs in grid. The paper also presents how a legacy code traffic simulator was transformed into a grid service using GEMLCA and gives some simulation results.

Multi-cluster Grids have emerged as the most popular type of Grid environments. On multi-cluster Grid, resources are distributed across different networks. Hence, scheduling and dispatching jobs are difficult and inefficient due to the restrictions of network and the communication over-head. This paper presents the design and implementation of an efficient GridRPC system for the multi-cluster Grid. Metascheduling mechanism is developed to distribute jobs onto different clusters of computers effectively. Further, a dynamic bundling mechanism is provided to reduce overhead of job dispatching. This mechanism bundles similar requests to form a composite request that is dispatched to a Grid resource. The above mechanisms have been tested with different types of services and loads, and the results show that they help to achieve more balanced workload and reduce the overhead of job dispatching. This cuts down execution time of applications. © 2005 IEEE.

Time synchronization has always been a critical deciding factor of whether interoperating simulation models using the High Level Architecture (HLA) is achievable efficiently. In this paper, we propose a conservative time synchronization algorithm that makes use of the manufacturing process flow information (a sequence of steps production lots flow through) in the computation of the request time. This time is used by the simulation federate to issue requests to advance time to the HLA Runtime Infrastructure (RTI). The proposed algorithm monitors the simulation events that potentially trigger external times tamp messages at the exit step and j processing steps before this exit step as well as simulation events that extend the timestamp of external messages. We evaluated the performance of this algorithm using a Borderless Fab simulation model on the AutoSched AP. The experimental results show that the algorithm performs much better than a straightforward use of the RTI's time synchronization, and the further back we went in looking at the processing steps, the better the execution time that was achieved. © 2005 IEEE.

Grid portals are increasingly used to provide uniform access to the grid infrastructure. This paper describes how the P-GRADE Grid Portal could be used in a collaborative manner to facilitate group work and support the notion of Virtual Organisations. We describe the development issues involved in the construction of a collaborative portal, including ensuring a consistent view between participants of a collaborative workflow and management of proxy credentials to allow separate nodes of the workflow to be submitted to different grids. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Simulation Packages (CSPs) are widely used to facilitate the creation of simulation models using some kind of visual interactive interface. CSPs have "evolved" over the years and are well used to support modeling demands in different market niches and domains. However, in terms of distributed simulation, there is almost a complete lack of support for interoperability. The advent of the High Level Architecture (HLA) standard makes it possible to connect distributed model components together. The model components can be developed using specific CSPs best suited to the application area. In this paper, a CSP Emulator (CSPE) is proposed to investigate the interfaces between the CSPs and the HLA Runtime Infrastructure. In addition to support for standalone models as provided by current CSPs, the CSPE has some new features needed for building distributed models. An evaluation is conducted between CSPE and Simul8, one of the popular CSPs.
