Multiagent systems provide a valuable tool for handling increasing software complexity and supporting rapid and accurate problem solving. This paper presents a general architecture in which autonomous agents are embedded in a distributed virtual environment and are enabled to communicate with each other. We focus on the interaction issues, using cooperation and coordination patterns. Different cases of the agents' teamwork to improve their efficiency are investigated and compared. A prototype system has been implemented, with message templates and algorithms identified. Finally, some experimental results are given.

The Grid provides a new and unrivaled technology for large scale distributed simulation as it enables collaboration and the use of distributed computing resources. This panel paper presents the views of four researchers in the area of distributed Simulation and the Grid. Together we try to identify the main research issues involved in applying Grid technology to distributed simulation and the key future challenges that need to be solved to achieve this goal. Such challenges include not only technical challenges, but also political ones such as management methodology for the Grid and the development of standards. The benefits of the Grid to end-user simulation modelers also are discussed.

This panel paper presents the views of six researchers and practitioners of simulation modeling. Collectively we attempt to address a range of key future challenges to modeling methodology. distributed simulation enables participants situated in different geographical locations to share a common virtual world, which is called a distributed virtual environment (DVE). Among the different research topics concerned with DVE, there is a current trend of linking multi-agent systems and DVE together. With the properties of autonomy, social ability, reactivity and proactiveness, agents can be used to represent entities in DVE, where fast and accurate decision making is a determining factor of the whole environment. This paper provides a description of integrating agents into an HLA-based distributed simulation. It focuses on how to construct the sensor of an agent with different interest management schemes. Using the JADE (Java agent development framework) agent toolkit and the high level architecture (HLA) in our prototype, a minesweeping game, we outline two different implementations of this game. Due to the dynamic characteristics of agents, a problem of overdue information from the environment is discussed, and we propose an enlarged subscription region method to solve this problem. Moreover, advisories provided by the HLA are adopted to reduce the overheads. Conclusions are drawn based on the experimental results of these implementations.

Network of workstations (NOW) is an attractive alternative to parallel database systems. Here we present a distributed architecture for parallel query processing on networks of workstations. We describe a comprehensive design that synthesizes knowledge from parallel and distributed systems area on scheduling, load sharing and loop scheduling. To study the performance of this architecture, we have implemented the distributed architecture using PVM on a Pentium-based NOW system. Our results show that the distributed architecture achieves good speedups and scaleups. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Request dispatching mechanism is at the heart of any cluster-computing environment. The goal is to support a single service provider address image for a given cluster of workstations. That is to say a given cluster publicises a single IP address and client requests are addressed to that IP address. This means, from the client's viewpoint, there are no nodes in the cluster, only services and the network names through which they are accessible. As a result, the cluster becomes a single virtual node. We propose a simple and elegant scheme for making the cluster transparent to clients outside the cluster such that the clients can interact with the cluster as if it were a single high-performance and highly available resource.

Networks of workstations (NOWs) are attractive for parallel processing due to their cost advantage. This paper investigates the performance issues in processing join operations and the inherent tradeoff in the networked workstation environment. Specifically, we look at the performance of the nested-loop join algorithm. Since NOWs are heterogeneous in nature, load sharing is important for their performance. We evaluated the performance of three load sharing methods: static equal, static proportional and dynamic scheduling with fixed-chunk size. The three scheduling methods are evaluated on an experimental heterogeneous network of workstations with non-query background loads. Our experimental result suggest that, when there is no background load, dynamic scheduling outperforms static equal scheduling (up to 40%) and marginally better (about 10% better speedup) than the static proportional scheduling. When there is dynamic background load on nodes, dynamic scheduling provides substantial performance improvement over the static proportional scheduling (up to 50%) and static equal scheduling (up to about 100%). In all cases, selection of an appropriate chunk size is important in dynamic scheduling.

This paper presents an algorithm for scheduling communication-intensive parallel applications in workstation clusters environment. The proposed scheduling policy combines the best attributes of both space-sharing and time-sharing principles and coexists with local schedulers (e.g., the Windows NT scheduler), which both provides coordinated scheduling and can generalise to provide a wide range of resource abstractions.

When a set of geographically distributed autonomous clusters of workstations are combined into a single large-scale virtual distributed system, a control mechanism for coordinating the activities of the combined system for effective utilisation of the resources is indispensable. This paper presents a co-ordination mechanism suitable for scheduling and distributing services across the host of such large-scale virtual distributed systems. The proposed scheme is scalable and reliable. Also, it combines both centralised and decentralised co-ordination mechanisms while eliminating/minimising their drawbacks.

Dynamic load sharing policies take system state into account in making load distribution decisions. The state information can be maintained in one of two basic ways: distributed or centralized. Two principal types of policies that belong to the distributed scheme are the sender-initiated and receiver-initiated policies. In the centralized scheme, a central coordinator node is responsible for collecting system state information. distributed policies do not perform as well as the centralized policy. Performance of distributed policies is sensitive to variance in job service times and inter-arrival times. distributed policies, however, are scalable whereas the centralized policy can cause bottleneck and fault-tolerance problems for large systems. An adaptive distributed policy has been proposed that dynamically switches between sender-initiated and receiver-initiated policies depending on the system state. Here we propose a new global hierarchical load sharing policy that minimizes the drawbacks associated with the distributed and centralized policies while retaining their advantages. We provide a performance comparison of these policies and show that the proposed hierarchical policy provides the best performance among the distributed and adaptive policies for all the various system and workload parameters considered. © 13th International Conference on Computers and Their Applications 1998, CATA 1998.
