There are many legacy code applications that cannot be run in grid environment without significant modifications. To avoid reengineering of legacy code, we developed the grid execution management for legacy code architecture (GEMLCA) that enables deployment of legacy code applications as grid services. GEMLCA is an OGSI grid service layer that supports submitting jobs, getting their results and status back. Security requirements are essential to any grid application to preserve the confidentiality and integrity of data. To meet these requirements the GT3 security model was implemented in GEMLCA. The paper introduces GEMLCA and how grid security infrastructure (GSI) components have been added to GEMLCA in order to enable secure execution of jobs in grid. The paper also presents how a legacy code traffic simulator was transformed into a grid service using GEMLCA and gives some simulation results.

Modelling and simulation permeate all areas of business, science and engineering and increasingly complex simulation systems often require huge computing resources and data sets that are geographically distributed. The widely adopted platform for building distributed simulations is the High Level Architecture (HLA). Deficiencies associated with HLA have been well discussed in the literature. The advent of Grid technology enables the use of distributed computing resources and facilitates the access of geographically distributed data. In this paper, we propose a framework for executing large-scale distributed simulations using Grid services. The framework addresses some of the deficiencies of HLA, including dynamic discovery and resource utilization. End-users can construct large-scale distributed simulations using this framework with ease.

Cloud computing grows rapidly as today's advanced information technology. However, by allowing outsourcing computation on the Cloud, users risk of disclosing privacy and obtaining forged results. These potential threats block sensitive applications to join the Cloud. In this paper, we characterize sensitive applications on the Cloud (SAND) problem and define two critical security requirements: confidentiality and verifiability. The former refers to the protection of sensitive programs/data from disclosing to other users or even the Cloud administrators. The latter concerns with user's capability to verify whether computing results are faithfully calculated. To address SAND, we propose a new Cloud model, Trusted Block as a Service (TBaaS), to provide a confidential and verifiable environment for each sensitive application. TBaaS limits Cloud provider's access of sensitive applications while granting user the ability to verify whether the computation is faithfully carried out. Moreover, it offers high flexibility and low performance overhead.

This paper presents our ongoing work on modeling agents with human-like decision making and behavior execution capabilities in crowd simulation. We aim to provide a generic framework that reflects the major cognitive and physical processes as observed from human behaviors in real-life situations. The design of the framework is based on some basic assumptions and related cognitive theories on human behaviors in various real-life situations. In this paper, the cognitive architecture of our framework is presented, which emphasizes the role of experiences in human's decision making. The paper also briefly describes the design of agent's decision making process and presents a case study to show some results in a crowd simulation scenario.

Cyber physical systems (CPS) have recently emerged as a promising approach to improve the synergy between physical and virtual worlds. CPS applications can be built on top of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) exploiting the physical information collected by them to bridge real and cyber realms. In this paper, we investigated the emerging problem of how to schedule multiple applications onto cyber-physical systems encompassed of multiple WSNs, while meeting demands of these applications. Our goal is to find out an optimal scheduling scheme for each application so that: (i) it minimizes the overall energy consumption, (ii) it meets the application's deadline, (iii) it provides the required data accuracy to applications, and (iv) it balances the workload of the system. To achieve such goals, we developed a polynomial-time three phase task scheduling heuristic, named HTPTS. Experimental results show that the time and energy performance of HTPTS are close to the time and energy of the benchmark in most of the cases, while load balance is satisfied.

computer science is a practical discipline. It is always a great challenge to evaluate students' computer practice using computer-aided means for large scale students. We always need to address problems such as suspected plagiarism and deviation of the overall difficulty factor. In this paper, a multi-dimensional assessment model is designed for CS courses based on the detailed practice processing data in an E-learning system. The model comprehensively evaluates the students' learning process and results in three aspects of correctness, originality, and quality detection. Besides, the teacher can easily participate in the assessment according to their needs. The correctness is an essential requirement, and the originality is based on the clustering results of students' behaviors after clone detection to curb homework plagiarism. SonarQube is used to detect code quality and put forward higher requirements for codes. Manual participation intelligence has improved the flexibility and applicability of the model to a certain extent. We applied this model on the EduCoder online education platform and carried out a comprehensive analysis of 485 students in the parallel Programming Principles and Practice Class of Huazhong University of science and Technology. Experiment results confirm the distinction, rationality, and fairness of the model in assessing student performance. It not only gives students a credible, comprehensive score in large-scale online practical programming courses but also gives teachers and students corresponding suggestions based on the evaluation results. Furthermore, the model can be extended to other online education platforms. © 2020 ACM.

Stowage planning for container ships is a core activity of shipping lines. As the size of containership increases, generating a stowage plan with good safety and stability for a large containership becomes increasingly difficult. In this paper, we present an automated stowage planning system for large containerships which consists of three modules: the stowage plan generator, the safety and stability adjustment module, and the optimization engine. This paper focuses on the safety and stability adjustment module which resolves the stability issues of a stowage plan by adjusting the distribution of container weights by stowing containers in alternative feasible locations and fine-tuning stability parameters through adjusting the ballast in tanks onboard. Using shipping data for a large 7000 TEUs containership on a multi-port voyage, we demonstrate that our system can generate stowage plans with improved safety and stability compared to those generated by experienced planners.

Building distributed systems from scratch is known as one of the most difficult and time consuming process in software engineering. A great deal of progress has been made in the development of middleware and techniques to facilitate the process of distributed systems through integrating reusable components and customizing middleware. However, most of these solutions tend to focus on the functional aspects of the components and how to adapt their behavior according to their needs. Although the non-functional properties of the services are equally important, because of the difficulties in representing and controlling them, they are usually neglected. This paper investigates the problem of distributed systems' non-functional properties and describes a framework that presents a solution to the problem. The framework is based on the idea of defining the non-functional properties of the services at the early stages of the design and incorporating such properties within the architecture to ease the process of managing the system at run time. © 2003 Published by Elsevier science B.V.

Time synchronization has always been a critical deciding factor of whether interoperating simulation models using the High Level Architecture (HLA) is achievable efficiently. In this paper, we propose a conservative time synchronization algorithm that makes use of the manufacturing process flow information (a sequence of steps production lots flow through) in the computation of the request time. This time is used by the simulation federate to issue requests to advance time to the HLA Runtime Infrastructure (RTI). The proposed algorithm monitors the simulation events that potentially trigger external times tamp messages at the exit step and j processing steps before this exit step as well as simulation events that extend the timestamp of external messages. We evaluated the performance of this algorithm using a Borderless Fab simulation model on the AutoSched AP. The experimental results show that the algorithm performs much better than a straightforward use of the RTI's time synchronization, and the further back we went in looking at the processing steps, the better the execution time that was achieved. © 2005 IEEE.
