This paper discusses the effect of processor failures on computation performed on two-dimensional VLSI processor arrays. Previously established properties of catastrophic fault patterns are used to study inherent limits to reconfigurability of these regular architectures. Bounds on number of faults the system can tolerate to provide guaranteed performance are derived. These results are the generalization of the results obtained in the case of one-dimensional processor arrays.< >

Collaborative editing is a subset of groupware system. Groupware or computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) application is "a computer-based system that supports groups of people engaged in a common task (or goal) and that provide an interface to a shared environment". This research area is also known as collaborative computing. Collaborative environment enables computer-based collaboration in wide-area network, static and dynamic resource sharing and instant or delayed feedback from collaborators. The objective of a collaborative environment is to allow coherent and consistent object sharing and manipulation by distributed users. Some examples of collaborative activities include desktop conferencing, cooperative document editing, cooperative designing and modeling. Consistency management mechanisms are needed to resolve conflicting actions performed by multiple users. Conflicting actions include simultaneous modification of shared data and out-of-order of data arrival and data execution due to communication delay.

Nowadays, more researchers in the simulation field are interested in the use of a service-oriented architecture and component-based system in order to design more efficient large-scale distributed simulation systems. A Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a collection of independent services with well-defined interfaces that can be accessed without knowledge of their implementation. A component-based approach separates the whole system into different parts based on their functionalities. In this paper, a framework for component-based distributed simulation on the Grid (SOAr-DSGrid) is introduced. One of the major issues in designing the framework is to have efficient data flow and control flow in the framework. Data flow describes the way that data moves in the system while control flow determines the order of activities that happen in the system. The rule engine is a critical part of the framework and is responsible for managing the distributed data flow and control flow. The design and implementation of the rule engine is the major focus of this paper. The rule engine enables the framework to be more scalable as the components within the framework now communicate in a fully distributed manner.

HIPERTRANS (High Performance Transport network modelling and Simulation) is a fast and visually representative simulator that can predict traffic on a given urban road network. It was designed using object-oriented techniques and by re-engineering established road traffic models. It has the capability of interfacing to a range of UTC (urban traffic control) systems. Its high performance version was implemented by using a novel parallel programming platform called SPIDER;it has the capability of executing faster than real time and runs on distributed processors. The simulator provides a powerful GUI (graphical user interface) for entering road network models, configuring simulation runs, and visualising simulation results. The system provides helpful traffic diagnostic tools enabling local transport authorities, policy makers, researchers, and UTC manufacturers to gainfully exploit its functionality. The HIPERTRANS project was funded by the European Commission under the 4th Framework programme. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Patterns of faults that are catastrophic for regular architectures, particularly the systolic arrays, have been studied. For a given link configuration, there are many fault patterns which are catastrophic. Among those, there is a particular fault pattern, called the reference fault pattern, which is crucial for the development of testing techniques;furthermore, the efficiency of any testing algorithm can be further improved in the presence of efficient algorithms for constructing the reference fault pattern. In this paper, we develop a new algorithm for the construction of the reference fault pattern for VLSI reconfigurable arrays in which the links are bidirectional. The complexity of the new algorithm is 0(kN) which is a significant improvement over the existing 0(N2) algorithm, where k is the number of bypass links, and N is the length of the largest bypass link. ©1992 IEEE.

As the volume of data to be processed in a timely manner soars, the scale of computing and storage systems has much trouble keeping up with such a rate of explosive data growth. A hybrid cloud combining two or more clouds is emerging as an appealing alternative to expand local/private systems. However, the effective use of such an expanded cloud system is limited primarily by low network bandwidth and high latency between clouds (i.e., large intercloud data transmission overheads) when applications/services span across clouds, and they deal with large data in particular. Online analytical processing (OLAP) applications are a typical class of data-intensive application. These applications process multi-dimensional analytical queries dealing with 'big data' (or data warehouses). In this paper, we address the effective processing of MapReduce-based OLAP applications in a hybrid-cloud environment, and present a (hybrid) cloud-aware OLAP system incorporating data filtering techniques. Our system filters out unnecessary data for intercloud transmission with the ultimate goal of optimizing the performance to cost ratio, or cost efficiency. Based on experimental results obtained using two large-scale data analysis benchmarks, our system demonstrates its efficacy in improving the cost efficiency with the reduction in intercloud network traffic from 76%-99%. © 2013 Australian computer Society, Inc.

Discrete-event simulation is used to analyze production and logistics problems in many areas such as commerce, defense, health, manufacturing and logistics. Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) Simulation Packages (CSPs) are black box visual interactive modelling environments that support the development of such simulations. These include CSPs such as Arena™, Anylogic™, Flexsim™, Simul8™, Witness™, etc. There have been various attempts to create distributed simulations with these CSPs and their tools, some with the High Level Architecture (HLA). These are complex and it is quite difficult to assess how a set of model/CSPs are actually interoperating. As the first in a series of standards aimed at standardizing how the HLA is used to support CSP-based distributed simulations, the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization's (SISO) CSP Interoperability Product Development Group (CSPI PDG) has developed and standardized a set of Interoperability Reference Models (IRM) that are intended to clearly identify the interoperability capabilities of CSP-based distributed simulations. This paper presents the standard and summarizes the current activities of the PDG.

Multi-cluster Grids have emerged as the most popular type of grid environments. On multi-cluster grid, resources are distributed across different networks. Hence, scheduling and dispatching jobs are difficult and inefficient due to the restrictions of network and the communication overhead. This paper presents the design and implementation of an efficient GridRPC system for the multi-cluster grid. Metascheduling mechanism is developed to distribute jobs onto different clusters of computers effectively. Further, a dynamic bundling mechanism is provided to reduce overhead of job dispatching. This mechanism bundles similar requests to form a composite request that is dispatched to a grid resource. The above mechanisms have been tested with different types of services and loads, and the results show that they help to achieve more balanced workload and reduce the overhead of job dispatching. This cuts down execution time of applications.

Networks of workstations (NOWs) are cost-effective alternatives to multiprocessor systems. Recently, NOWs have been proposed for parallel query processing. Idle CPU cycles of workstations in a NOW-based system can be used to process database query operations. We report on the performance of the hierarchical architecture for parallel query processing on a NOW. We have implemented the hierarchical architecture using PVM on a Pentium-based NOW. The experimental results reported suggest that the hierarchical architecture is successful in achieving good scale-ups and speedups indicating that the idle processor cycles are effectively used for query processing. The hierarchical system can also handle both light and heavy workloads in a load sharing fashion. Our results also suggest that the performance is sensitive to the minimum fragmentation size (chunk size) for partial operations and the structure of queries.

The scale of cloud services keeps increasing over time, significantly introducing huge challenges in system manageability and reliability. Designing coordination services in cloud is the right track to solve the above problems. However, existing coordination services (e.g., Chubby and ZooKeeper) only perform well in read-intensive scenario and small ensemble scales. To this end, we propose Giraffe, a scalable distributed coordination service. There are three important contributions in our design. (1) Giraffe organizes coordination servers using interior-node-disjoint trees for better scalability. (2) Giraffe employs a novel Paxos protocol for strong consistency and fault-tolerance. (3) Giraffe supports hierarchical data organization and in-memory storage for high throughput and low latency. We evaluate Giraffe on a high performance computing test-bed. The experimental results show that Giraffe gains much better write performance than ZooKeeper when server ensemble is large. Giraffe is nearly 300% faster than ZooKeeper on update operations when ensemble size is 50 servers. Experiments also show that Giraffe reacts and recovers more quickly than ZooKeeper against node failures. © 2014 IEEE.
