Decentralized PID controllers by synthesis method for multivariable unstable systems

The simple method of designing decentralised PID controllers for stable systems by the synthesis method is extended to unstable systems. The effectiveness of the proposed method is compared with that of the available decentralised controllers. The robustness of these controllers is evaluated by the inverse maximum singular value versus frequency plot for both the input multiplicative uncertainty and the output multiplicative uncertainty. Simulation results for two input - two output (TITO) systems demonstrate that the proposed method guarantees robust stability and it provides better servo and regulatory responses. © 2016, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. In many applications of fluidized reactors, the particles processed are cohesive. The presence of inter-particle cohesive force causes different fluidization dynamics compared to non-cohesive system. This paper studied the fluidization dynamics of cohesive Geldart B particles in a three dimensional fluidized bed. X-ray tomography and in-bed pressure fluctuation analysis were conducted to reveal bubble behaviors as well as overall fluidization status. The results show that increasing cohesive force facilitates bubble coalescence, leading to the growth of bubble size. When bubbles grow to similar dimensions to the column cross section, the particles above bubbles are lifted as a particle slug and the fluidization turns to slugging. As the cohesive force increases, the energy distribution of power spectral density of pressure signal changes from mono-modal shape to bi-modal shape where two peaks relate to slugging and normal fluidization respectively. At low static bed heights, no slugging takes place even under high cohesive forces. Therefore, to avoid slugging in the practical application, the static bed height should be kept as low as possible. With further increase in the static bed heights, bubbles keep growing by continuous coalescence and become considerable near the bed surface, which triggers slugging and causes an increase in slugging duration.

Background: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Understanding the current state of the HIV epidemic and its change over time is essential to this effort. This study assesses the current sex-specific HIV burden in 204 countries and territories and measures progress in the control of the epidemic. Methods: To estimate age-specific and sex-specific trends in 48 of 204 countries, we extended the Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model to also implement the spectrum paediatric model. We used this model in cases where age and sex specific HIV-seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care-clinic sentinel surveillance data were available. For the remaining 156 of 204 locations, we developed a cohort-incidence bias adjustment to derive incidence as a function of cause-of-death data from vital registration systems. The incidence was input to a custom Spectrum model. To assess progress, we measured the percentage change in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 (threshold >75% decline), the ratio of incident cases to number of people living with HIV (incidence-to-prevalence ratio threshold <0·03), and the ratio of incident cases to deaths (incidence-to-mortality ratio threshold <1·0). Findings: In 2019, there were 36·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 35·1–38·9) people living with HIV worldwide. There were 0·84 males (95% UI 0·78–0·91) per female living with HIV in 2019, 0·99 male infections (0·91–1·10) for every female infection, and 1·02 male deaths (0·95–1·10) per female death. Global progress in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 was driven by sub-Saharan Africa (with a 28·52% decrease in incident cases, 95% UI 19·58–35·43, and a 39·66% decrease in deaths, 36·49–42·36). Elsewhere, the incidence remained stable or increased, whereas deaths generally decreased. Heat and mass transfer in an adjacent internally-cooled membrane-based liquid desiccant dehumidifier (AIMLDD)

An adjacent internally-cooled membrane-based liquid desiccant dehumidifier (AIMLDD) is proposed and used for air dehumidification. The AIMLDD is a parallel-plate membrane contactor, which contains cooling channels. The air and the solution streams are separated by selectively permeable membranes, while the solution and the water streams are separated by plastic plate. The air stream flows in a cross-flow arrangement with the solution stream, while the solution stream flows in a co-current flow arrangement with the water stream. Establish a mathematical model in a unit cell, which contains half of an air channel, a piece of membrane, a solution channel, a piece of plastic plate, and half of a cooling channel, to research the conjugate heat and mass transports in the AIMLDD. Use a finite difference method to solve the normalized equations governing momentum, heat and mass transports. The dehumidification amount, the efficiency and outlet parameters are then obtained. A continuous air dehumidification system based on the AIMLDD is set up to validate the numerical results. Compare the efficiency under different condition and different structure of the membrane contactor. It can be found that the dehumidification amount and the efficiency for the AIMLDD are higher than those for an adiabatic one.

An online monitoring method, which aims to deal with the high order non-Gaussian characteristics in chemical process, is proposed in this paper. In the framework of the proposed method, kernel based independent component analysis is utilized to identify the operation status of the chemical process and statistics pattern analysis is employed to combine with independent component analysis to extract high order information from the process so as to improve the monitoring performance. The modified statistics pattern analysis introduces the Mahalanobis distance into statistics pattern to analyze the inner structure relationship between the samples. Then, the validity and effectiveness of our proposed method is illustrated by applying to a representative non-Gaussian process, Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR). The results show that the proposed method has its advantages when compared to other conventional Eigen-decomposition monitoring algorithms.

The comparative study of static estimators (soft sensors) for a multicomponent distillation process based on the industrial and calibrated rigorous model datasets is considered. The sequence of distillation columns of an FFC unit is analyzed as an industrial case study. The contribution of the paper is to develop a method aimed at incorporating a priori knowledge about process in terms of rigorous models for static estimator design when the training sample is small and contains measurement errors. The superiority of a constrained optimization approach for SE design over conventional robust M -estimator is reported. The system of constraints is derived from a calibrated rigorous model of an industrial plant. © 2016
