Nowadays, novel construction materials, more efficient power supplies and advanced artificial intelligence algorithms allow one to use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in various fields of life. One of the biggest events promoting this idea is the Air Cargo Challenge (ACC) competition. In this paper the motivation for ACC participation and the overall procedure of CAD aided UAV design are presented. The nonlinear aircraft model as well as Computational Fluid Dynamic simulations are discussed. Finally, some details concerning designed UAV prototype are revealed.

This paper investigates the stability and L_2-gain problems for a class of continuous-time periodic piecewise linear systems with possibly non-Hurwitz subsystems. First, the exponential stability of periodic piecewise systems is studied by allowing the Lyapunov function to possibly non-monotonically decreasing over a period. A sufficient condition is established in terms of matrix inequalities. In light of the proposed Lyapunov function, the L_2-gain criterion is derived for periodic piecewise linear systems as well.

This paper investigates the problems of observer-based feedback controller synthesis for discrete-time linear systems under bounded peak disturbances. The control objective is to make the system state of the closed-loop system under bounded peak disturbances converges to an ellipsoid that is as small as possible or converges to a pre-specified ellipsoid. In order to determine the observer gain and feedback gain in the observer-based controller, the matrix decoupling technique is adopted to derive the single-step matrix inequality conditions. A numerical example is given to show the validity of the theoretical findings.

In this paper, the fast-scale or period doubling bifurcation in a chopper driven series connected DC motor operating in continuous conduction mode is analyzed and controlled. By employing the monodromy matrix approach, the system parameter values at which the nominal period-1 orbit loses stability is determined analytically. Then, by manipulation of the State Transition Matrix (STM) at the switching manifold of the unstable periodic orbit, we were able to control the onset of the fast-scale bifurcation and thus extend the system parameter range for nominal period-1 operation.

Ultrasonic treatment of waste activated sludge is one of the possibilities to reduce excess sludge production through the mechanism of sludge disintegration and cell lysis. In the past, several attempts have been made to model the process of solubilisation of the particulate volatile suspended solid part of the activated sludge (VSS) into soluble COD (sCOD). However, the focus of these models was predominantly on predicting an efficiency factor for the release of sCOD (Disintegration Degree, DDCOD) and provided no information on the release of nutrients and the instantaneous reduction of VSS. Moreover, often insufficient influential variables were included in the model equations, making the models only applicable on the training dataset of their own experimental research. This paper, therefore, seeks to build a simple model, which contains all influential input variables, that can predict not only the sCOD release but also the nutrients release (ortho-PO4-P and soluble Kjeldahl nitrogen) and VSS reduction simultaneously. Therefore, in first instance, a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is carried out on the input and output data matrix of obtained experimental observations that will be used as training data. In this way, certain correlated input variables and independent output variables can be removed from the model, in order to increase its simplicity and predictive nature. Then, the model is built on the basis of Partial Least Squares Regression (PLS-R) and a part of the observations is used to validate the predictive strength of the model. © IFAC.

A new methodology for designing robust and efficient state-feedback control laws for a switched-mode boost DC-DC power converter has been recently proposed. This approach has adopted the so-called stabilizing or Lyapunov-based control paradigm which is well-known in the area of energy-based control of DC-DC converters, whereby the control law takes a state-feedback form parameterized by a positive scalar γ. Extension to state-dependent switching state-feedback control laws has been proposed, where the switching surfaces are parameterized by a number of positive scalars γ. i . In this paper this methodology is revisited by considering the problem of designing optimal switching state-feedback control laws, i.e. finding the optimal control parameters γ. i corresponding to the optimal position of the switching surfaces. This permits minimization of the number of switchings required for achieving an optimal performance and hence reduced complexity of the control law. Systematic derivation of gradient information to apply gradient-descent algorithms is provided. The proposed technique is numerically evaluated using the exact switched model of the converter.

Despite all EU efforts to tackle food poisoning and spoilage, about 5,400 outbreaks and 1.3 billion tons of food waste are reported annually, with a significant impact on EU economy and public health. Modelling and simulation of microbial dynamics as a function of processing, transportation and storage conditions is a useful tool to guarantee food safety and quality. The goal of this research is to improve an existing methodology in order to build accurate predictive models based on multiple environmental conditions. The effect of multiple environmental conditions on microbial dynamics is often described by combining the separate effects in a multiplicative way (gamma concept). This idea was extended further in this work by including the effects of the lag and stationary growth phases on microbial growth rate as independent gamma factors. A mechanistic description of the stationary phase as a function of pH was included, based on a novel class of models that consider product inhibition. Experimental results on Escherichia coli growth dynamics indicated that also the parameters of the product inhibition equations can be modelled with the gamma approach. This work has extended a modelling methodology, resulting in predictive models that are (i) mechanistically inspired, (ii) easily identifiable with a limited work load and (iii) easily extendable to additional environmental conditions.

Diesel power system is one of the popular schemes for energy supply generation. It is, however, typically associated with high costs of emission control and maintenance on top of the diesel fuel cost. These limitations can be overcome by incorporating renewable energy technologies such as wind turbines and solar PV along with the existing diesel station. Hybrid systems provide cleaner and reliable power supply, and can be more cost-effective than sole diesel systems. This paper assesses the feasibility of expanding an existing diesel power plant into a hybrid power system (HPS) using Power Pinch Analysis (PoPA). An HPS configuration developed with PoPA methodology can provide optimal solar and wind electricity supplies while minimising the diesel runtime. Results show that an HPS that combines solar and wind system with diesel power generation can provide significant diesel fuel savings while satisfying the demands at a reasonable cost. Traditional models in predictive microbiology describe microbial dynamics in homogeneous liquid food systems. However, most food systems have a semi-solid structure, in which microbial cells grow locally as colonies. Due to the high cell density in these colonies, the environment becomes inhomogeneous as a result of nutrient over- consumption and cell product accumulation. Hence, the individual cells exhibit strongly different behavior according to their position in the colony. Consequently, an individual-based modeling approach, considering the cell as the basic modeling unit, is most appropriate to describe colony dynamics in full detail. In this paper, an individual-based model is developed for anaerobic colony behavior of Escherichia coli K-12. From the simulation, characteristic colony dynamics emerge, such as a linear radius increase. These dynamics result from the pH drop and concomitant cellular stress in the colony center due to accumulation of lactic acid.
