Modelling of the ultrasonic disintegration of activated sludge

Ultrasonic treatment of waste activated sludge is one of the possibilities to reduce excess sludge production through the mechanism of sludge disintegration and cell lysis. In the past, several attempts have been made to model the process of solubilisation of the particulate volatile suspended solid part of the activated sludge (VSS) into soluble COD (sCOD). However, the focus of these models was predominantly on predicting an efficiency factor for the release of sCOD (Disintegration Degree, DD COD ) and provided no information on the release of nutrients and the instantaneous reduction of VSS. Moreover, often insufficient influential variables were included in the model equations, making the models only applicable on the training dataset of their own experimental research. This paper, therefore, seeks to build a simple model, which contains all influential input variables, that can predict not only the sCOD release but also the nutrients release (ortho-PO 4 -P and soluble Kjeldahl nitrogen) and VSS reduction simultaneously. Therefore, in first instance, a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is carried out on the input and output data matrix of obtained experimental observations that will be used as training data. In this way, certain correlated input variables and independent output variables can be removed from the model, in order to increase its simplicity and predictive nature. Then, the model is built on the basis of Partial Least Squares Regression (PLS-R) and a part of the observations is used to validate the predictive strength of the model.

This paper studies a synthesis approach to predictive control for networked control systems with data loss and quantization. An augmented Markov jump linear model with polytopic uncertainties is modeled to describe the quantization errors and possible data loss. Based on this model, a predictive control synthesis approach is developed, which involves online optimization of a infinite horizon objective and conditions to deal with system constraints. The proposed MPC algorithm guarantees closed-loop mean-square stability and constraints satisfaction. © 2014 TCCT, CAA.

The aim of this work was to quantify particle and black carbon emissions by Chinese cooking using different types of oil and food materials. Two sets of experiments were designed in a chamber. Particle mass concentration, number size distribution and black carbon concentration were simultaneously monitored using a DustTrakTM DRX Aerosol Monitor Model 8533, a TSI Fast Mobility Particle Sizer 3091 (FMPS) and an Aethalometer AE51, respectively. It was found that Chinese cooking made of olive oil produced the largest amount of PM1, PM2.5 and black carbon, attained to values of 55, 57 and 0.19 mg/m3, respectively. The further investigation of the contribution from different food materials was concluded that olive oil frying cabbage emitted the largest amount of PM1, PM2.5 and black carbon compared to pork, potato and chicken.

In recent years, control of smart grids that match electricity demand in different sites and forms with supply has been considered as one of the most difficult aspect of smart energy grids design. In this paper we present a Cellular Automata (CA) based approach combined with Game Theory for the enhancement of Power Management Strategies (PMSs) of multiple Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (HYRES) that form a smart grid for the exchange of energy. More specifically, taking advantage of the local interactions of HYRES we coupled CA principles with Public Goods Game (PGG) for modeling. The presented CA model focuses on providing valuable feedback for PMSs of the understudy HYRES connected in a grid. In this manner, a flexible network based HYRES design is considered and applied to specific HYRESs located in Olvio, near Xanthi, Greece, part of SYSTEMS SUNLIGHT facilities. The proposed model can be applied to the understudy HYRESs grid management to enhance and optimize its PMS based on the provided energy prediction scenarios. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

In this paper we describe a new methodology for designing robust and efficient state-feedback control laws for a switched-mode boost DC-DC power converter. The proposed design is adopting the so-called Lyapunov-based control law and attempts to solve the robust constrained stabilization problem under large parameter variations. With the methodology proposed static or switching state-feedback control laws are generated so that a number of further key issues are addressed, i.e. low complexity of the implementation, accurate nonlinear dynamics incorporation, nonconservative handling of hard state and control constraints, robustness to supply voltage variations, set-point and load changes. The control design procedure is based on the generation of controlled invariant polytopes (safety domains) using piecewise-linear Lyapunov functions. The proposed technique is numerically evaluated using the exact switched model of the converter.

Soot formation and growth in propane/air diffusion flames in a wide range of mole ratio of propane to air from 0.01 to 0.1 have been studied experimentally and theoretically. The concentration of acetylene, soot yield and particle size have been measured and the growth of soot particle has been simulated from surface growth and nucleation processes. The rate coefficient of surface growth has been correlated with the mole ratio of propane to air and the comparisons of particle size between measured and calculated results have been made. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Recent research efforts, relying on constrained stabilization principles, have been concentrated on the design of robust and efficient state-feedback control laws for switched-mode DC-DC boost converters, characterized by accurate nonlinear dynamics incorporation, nonconservative handling of hard state and control constraints, and robustness to supply voltage variations and load changes. This paper focuses on the efficient construction of flexible polyhedral Lyapunov functions, which can facilitate control design procedures which address all aforementioned issues via the generation of contractive polytopes (safety domains). New non-conservative conditions for the averaged-model bilinear converter dynamics and a corresponding ray-gridding algorithm are proposed that allow near-maximal approximations of the real stability domains with negligible computational cost. A significant improvement in the size of the contractive domains is obtained by resorting to more flexible partial contractivity conditions. This novelty allows the extension of the constrained stabilization framework to robust constrained tracking, whereby a wide operating region may be covered. The proposed ideas can be applied for the specification of affine state-feedback control laws and are numerically evaluated on a boost converter example using the exact switched model of the converter.

This paper is concerned with the identification problems of linear parameter varying (LPV) systems with randomly missing output data. Since one local linearized model cannot capture the global dynamics of the nonlinear industrial process, the multiple-model LPV model in which the global model is constructed by smoothly weighted combination of multiple local models is considered here. The problem of missing output variables data is commonly encountered in practice. In order to handle the multiple-model identification problems of LPV systems with incomplete data, the local model is taken to have a finite impulse response (FIR) model structure and the generalized expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is adopted to estimate the unknown parameters of the global LPV model. To avoid the problems of ill-conditioned matrices and high sensitivity of parameters to noise, the prior information on the coefficients of each local FIR model is employed to construct the prior probability of unknown parameters. Then the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimates of the global model parameters are derived via the generalized EM algorithm. The numerical example is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
