Development of Soft Sensors for Crude Distillation Unit control

Abstract Soft sensors for distillation end point (D95) on-line estimation in crude distillation unit (CDU) are developed. Experimental data are acquired from the refinery distributed control system (DCS) and include on-line available continuously measured variables and laboratory assays. Soft sensors are developed using different linear and nonlinear identification methods. Additional laboratory data for model identification are generated by Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARSplines). The models are evaluated based on Route Mean Square (RMS), Absolute Error (AE), FIT and Final Prediction Error (FPE) criteria. The best results are achieved with Box Jenkins (BJ), Output Error (OE) and Hammerstein–Wiener (HW) model. Based on developed soft sensors it is possible to estimate fuel properties in continuous manner and apply inferential control. By real plant application of developed soft sensors considerable savings could be expected, as well as compliance with strict law regulations for product quality specifications.

Abstract Although anaerobic digestion is a widely applied technology, the process is not yet fully understood because of its high complexity, and an optimization of the current technology is still needed. The design and control of digester systems is still generally performed by rule-of-thumb since no tools are currently available for an accurate evaluation of performance. The application of mathematical models is a prerequisite to improve digester performance and hence much attention is focused on the development of accurate models. This paper critically reviews the current state of the art about mathematical modeling of anaerobic digestion models. Moreover, the main trends in optimization of the existing models and the development of new models are discussed.

Quantifying the combined effect of salt and temperature on the growth of Listeria strains isolated from salmon and salmon processing environments

The effects of temperature and salt concentration on the growth of relevant strains of L. monocytogenes and Listeria innocua , were quantified based on growth in a liquid broth medium, monitored by measuring turbidity. Absorbance curves were used to estimate maximum growth rate and lag time. The growth rates increase with increasing temperatures. The levels were quite similar for both species, although L. monocytogenes showed higher growth rate than L . innocua at 4 °C. Lag time was more affected both by temperature and salt concentration, and these effects were most prominent for L. innocua .

A neural based PID feedback control method for networked process control systems is presented. As there are some uncertain factors such as external disturbance, randomly delayed measurements or control demands in real networked process control systems, the proposed PID controller is implemented by backpropagation neural networks whose weights are updated via minimizing tracking error entropy of closed loop systems. To demonstrate the potential applications of the proposed strategy, an example of a simulated batch reactor is provided. The proposed design method is shown to be useful and effective in dealing with network process control systems. © 2011 Zhejiang University.

Abstract For dynamic batch process monitoring, a two-dimensional dynamic modeling framework has recently been formulated, which is based on a two-dimensional autoregressive model and the principal component analysis (PCA) method. Different from traditional dynamic batch process monitoring, the two-dimensional method can monitor both within batch and batch-to-batch dynamic information of the process data. However, this PCA-related method has two main restrictions, which may render poor monitoring performance in practice. First, it is under the assumption that the distribution of the process data is Gaussian. Second, the correlations between different process variables are assumed to be linear with each other. Unfortunately, both of these two assumptions are difficult to satisfy in batch processes. In this paper, support vector data description (SVDD) is incorporated into the two-dimensional modeling framework, which has no Gaussian limitation of the data, and can also model the nonlinear relationship between process variables. For dynamic batch process monitoring, a distance based statistic is proposed. Based on results of a simulation case study, the monitoring performance has been improved.

A thermodynamic approach to assess a cellular mechanism of inactivation and the thermal resistance of Listeria innocua

In order to link kinetic data of isothermally inactivated planktonic cells to the enthalpy changes observed in pellet analysed in the DSC, two strains of Listeria innocua were investigated. Isothermal inactivation of planktonic cells showed z -values of 4.71 o C for L. innocua ATCC 33090 and 5.15 o C for CCUG 35613(= ATCC 51742). The results of the DSC analyses showed a linearly decreasing remaining enthalpy with increasing dynamic preheating temperature (from 20 to 66-80 o C). Deriving equivalent isothermal temperatures, the temperature profiles could be directly correlated with the microbial enthalpy changes, indicating that ribosome denaturation is not the inactivation mechanism for the low thermal treatments studied.

Isolation and Screening of Rhizobacteria from Scirpus Grossus Plant after Lead （Pb） Exposure

Phytoremediation is one of method which can be applied to remediate the contaminated environment. In most cases, microorganisms bacteria and fungi, living in the rhizosphere closely associated with plants, may contribute to mobilize metal ions by increasing the bioavailable fraction. Some studies have evidenced that heavy metal-resistant bacteria can enhance metal uptake by hyperaccumulator plants. Lead-resistant bacteria which could help to increase the lead uptake by Scirpus grossus was isolated and screened. The samples were taken from plant roots after being exposed in a range finding test by spiking analytical grade of Pb（NO3）2 solution in variation of Pb concentrations. The results of rhizobacteria isolation showed that there were several colonies having resistance to grow and survive in contaminated environment even the host plant had withered. Only a few of rhizobacteria colonies were affected by high concentrations of lead exposure during screening test. The screening test was conducted by growing the isolated colonies on plates containing tryptic soy agar （TSA） medium containing of 200, 400 and 600 mg/L Pb solution including the plate with only TSA media without any lead exposure acting as a control medium, and incubating them at 30℃ for 72 hours. Isolation of bacteria from rhizosphere had found 47 colonies including several colonies from the withered plants. These all 47 colonies then become 28 after characterization by using color and colony morphology, followed by Gram stain, catalase, oxidase and motility test. The screening test of lead resistant bacteria colonies resulted 3 groups which is scored high, medium and low. The screened colonies will then be used for further study.

The objective of this work is to investigate the effect of the (possible) acid adaptation during growth in a glucose rich environment on the heat resistance of Escherichia coli K12 MG1655. E. coli cells were grown in TSB and/or TSB dextrose free broth until they reached the stationary phase. Afterwards, the stationary phase cells were added in TSB and/or TSB dextrose free broth and inactivation took place at 54 o C and 58 o C. It was observed that growth in a glucose rich environment leads to an increased heat resistance, most likely due to a certain level of acid and further heat adaptation via cross protection.

Mill load (ML) estimation plays a major role in improving the grinding production rate (GPR) and the product quality of the grinding process. The ML parameters, such as mineral to ball volume ratio (MBVR), pulp density (PD) and charge volume ratio (CVR), reflect the load inside the ball mill accurately. The relative amplitudes of the high-dimensional frequency spectrum of shell vibration signals contain the information about the ML parameters. In this paper, a kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) based multi-spectral segments feature extraction and genetic algorithm (GA) based Combinatorial optimization method is proposed to estimate the ML parameters. Spectral peak clustering algorithm based knowledge is first used to partition the spectrum into several segments with their physical meaning. Then, the spectral principal components (PCs) of different segments are extracted using KPCA. The candidate input features are serial combinated with mill power. At last, GA with Akaike's information criteria (AIC) is used to select the input features and the parameters for the least square-support vector machine (LS-SVM) simultaneously. Experimental results show that the proposed approach has higher accuracy and better predictive performance than the other normal approaches.
