Long-range predictive controllers for discrete-time MIMO bilinear processes are derived based on a new bilinear model with integral action. Using this model a multi-step-ahead optimal predictor is derived. Two alternative solution methods - rigorous and shortcut - of the minimization problem of a long-range objective function are established and used to calculate control inputs. Several simulation results show that the proposed control methods have robustness to the limited a priori knowledge of the process. Dynamic simulation on dual composition control of a binary distillation process showed satisfactory servo and regulatory performances of the proposed algorithms.

Observability and controllability aspects of a continuous pilot scale crystalliser are discussed. Both are major requirements for control system design. The proposed control system uses the crystal size distributions (CSD), observed by on-line sensors, based on the method of forward light scattering, as inputs, and the rate of withdrawal of fine and large crystals from the crystalliser as outputs. A set of robust parameters is derived to describe the location and spread of the CSD. A statistical measure to validate the quality of the measurements is also derived which enhances filtering capabilities. Experimental results show good observability and reproducibility of CSD dynamics, and a sufficiently strong correlation of process inputs and outputs.

The steady-state interaction measure of dual composition control schemes for binary distillation columns is examined under the assumptions of constant relative volatility and constant molar overflow. An exhaustive enumeration is made of the control schemes that use column flows or their ratios as manipulated variables and product compositions as the controlled variables. Using a redundancy criterion, it is shown that 34 classes of dual composition control schemes have independent values for the interaction measure. This number reduces to 17 when the feed is a saturated liquid or gas. For high purity columns, the interaction measure of the above 34 control schemes approaches the values for the (L, V), (D, V), and (L3) control schemes. In this case none of the control schemes has a desirable interaction measure.
