Research software has become a central asset in academic research. It optimizes existing and enables new research methods, implements and embeds research knowledge, and constitutes an essential research product in itself. Research software must be sustainable in order to understand, replicate, reproduce, and build upon existing research or conduct new research effectively. In other words, software must be available, discoverable, usable, and adaptable to new needs, both now and in the future. Research software therefore requires an environment that supports sustainability. Hence, a change is needed in the way research software development and maintenance are currently motivated, incentivized, funded, structurally and infrastructurally supported, and legally treated. Failing to do so will threaten the quality and validity of research. In this paper, we identify challenges for research software sustainability in Germany and beyond, in terms of motivation, selection, research software engineering personnel, funding, infrastructure, and legal aspects. Besides researchers, we specifically address political and academic decision-makers to increase awareness of the importance and needs of sustainable research software practices. In particular, we recommend strategies and measures to create an environment for sustainable research software, with the ultimate goal to ensure that software-driven research is valid, reproducible and sustainable, and that software is recognized as a first class citizen in research. The development of digital media is reviewed and definitions are provided. The advantages of digital media over traditional media are set out, and the current challenges are summarized. The convergence of IT, telecommunications, and media is bringing about a revolution in the way information is collected, stored and accessed. There are three principal reasons why this is happening – reducing cost, increasing quality, and increasing bandwidth. Digital media preserves content accuracy (e.g. digital television) in a way other systems do not. High bandwidth transmission from one place to another on the planet is now possible. Information is ubiquitous and globally accessible, and can be held and accessed just as easily on a global network as on a local personal computer or in a local library. Thus anyone generating state of the art content can produce an impact on the global network. Devices are increasingly intelligent and are network-ready. User interfaces are becoming more adaptable and flexible, and can be tailored to particular application domains. Digital intelligence is becoming seamless and invisible, enabling more attention to be paid to the content and the user’s interaction with it. Digital media includes a wide range of applications such as computer games, multimedia production, animation, graphics and video editing, and digital video film making. Media content is now created in digital form and can be repurposed across different media types such as DVD, Internet, or traditional print. This offers scope for different forms of advertising, and providing added value to consumers by providing dynamic links to other relevant information. This provides new value chains and ecosystems. This is turn affects social and cultural contexts, and interacts with them. The user as content creator, publisher, and broadcaster is changing the traditional roles of news media, publishers, and entertainment corporations. A 3-D new chaotic jerk system with three cubic nonlinearities is proposed in this paper. The dynamical properties of the new jerk system are described in terms of phase portraits, Lyapunov exponents, Kaplan-Yorke dimension, symmetry, dissipativity, etc. Also, a detailed dynamical analysis of the jerk system has been carried out with bifurcation diagram and Lyapunov exponents. As an engineering application, adaptive synchronization of the new chaotic jerk system with itself is designed via backstepping control method. Furthermore, an electronic circuit realization of the new chaotic jerk system is presented in detail to confirm the feasibility of the theoretical chaotic jerk model.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most energetic phenomena in the Universe. Many aspects of GRB physics are still under debate, such as the origin of their gamma-ray emission above the GeV energy range. In 2019, MAGIC detected TeV gamma rays from the long GRB 190114C, whose emission can be well explained by synchrotron-self Compton emission by relativistic electrons. However, it is still unclear whether such a process is common in GRBs, given the reduced number of GRBs detected until now at the very high energies (VHE). GRB 201216C is a long GRB and is the second one detected by MAGIC in this energy range. After receiving the alert provided by Swift-BAT, MAGIC automatically slewed to the GRB position, starting observations 56 seconds after the GRB onset. In the offline analyses of the collected data, we confirmed the detection of gamma-ray emission with a significance above 5 sigma. Following measurements from optical facilities, the redshift of this GRB was estimated to be z = 1.1. This makes GRB 201216C the most distant object ever detected by ground-based gamma-ray telescopes. In this contribution we will show the analysis results of the MAGIC data, also in comparison with past detected GRBs in the same energy range. A 3-D new chaotic system with five nonlinearities is proposed in this paper. A novel feature of our chaotic system is that there is no linear term in it. We also show that the chaotic system consists of equilibrium points on the z-axis (line equilibrium) as well as two equilibrium points on the (x, y)-plane. The dynamical properties of the new chaotic system are described in terms of phase portraits, bifurcation diagram, Lyapunov exponents, coexisting attractors, coexisting bifurcation and offset boosting control. Finally, an electronic circuit realization of the new chaotic system is presented in detail to confirm the feasibility of the theoretical chaotic model.

Registration of longitudinal brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans containing pathologies is challenging due to dramatic changes in tissue appearance. Although there has been considerable progress in developing general-purpose medical image registration techniques, they have not yet attained the requisite precision and reliability for this task, highlighting its inherent complexity. Here we describe the Brain Tumor Sequence Registration (BraTS-Reg) challenge, as the first public benchmark environment for deformable registration algorithms focusing on estimating correspondences between pre-operative and follow-up scans of the same patient diagnosed with a diffuse brain glioma. The challenge was conducted in conjunction with both the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) 2022 and the International Conference on Medical Image computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) 2022. The BraTS-Reg data comprise de-identified multi-institutional multi-parametric MRI (mpMRI) scans, curated for size and resolution according to a canonical anatomical template, and divided into training, validation, and testing sets. Clinical experts annotated ground truth (GT) landmark points of anatomical locations distinct across the temporal domain. The training data with their GT annotations, were publicly released to enable the development of registration algorithms. The validation data, without their GT annotations, were also released to allow for algorithmic evaluation prior to the testing phase, which only allowed submission of containerized algorithms for evaluation on hidden hold-out testing data. Quantitative evaluation and ranking was based on the Median Euclidean Error (MEE), Robustness, and the determinant of the Jacobian of the displacement field. The top-ranked methodologies yielded similar performance across all evaluation metrics and shared several methodological commonalities, including pre-alignment, deep neural networks, inverse consistency
