The aim of our work is to make it easier for non-programmers to program robot motion. We designed a system that translates human motion to motion of a (virtual and physical) humanoid Pepper robot. The system enables programming robot animations using pose-matching imitation of human motion. We developed a prototype that implements recording functionality, evaluated the prototype, and revised the system architecture based on feedback from participants with expertise in dance or programming the Pepper robot. We extend a conceptual design space for computer animation by including a physical robot. On the basis of this design space and the prototype development, we describe interaction design considerations for robot animation systems that implement human-humanoid imitation systems.

High-Resolution Image Processing and Spatiotemporal Data Transmission System Based on GPU Acceleration

With the development of information technology and the increasing demand for data processing, the serial mode of the central processing unit (CPU) is difficult to efficiently transmit large-scale spatiotemporal data, and the processing effect for high-resolution images is not good. This paper designed a high-resolution image processing and spatiotemporal data transmission system based on graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration to improve the processing efficiency of large-scale spatiotemporal data. In this paper, traffic spatiotemporal data was taken as an example for analysis. Large-scale traffic image data was collected by road monitoring equipment, and image compression was performed on the collected image. Fourier transform was used to eliminate image data redundancy, and GPU-accelerated parallel processing was used to achieve fast image defogging and data transmission. This paper selected 2TB of traffic spatiotemporal data with image resolutions of 540P, 720P, 1080P, 1440P, and 2160P. GPU acceleration was performed using the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA). In images with a resolution of 2160P, the processing time for CPU and GPU acceleration was 2900ms and 28ms, respectively, with an acceleration ratio of 103.6. A high-resolution image processing and spatiotemporal data transmission system based on GPU acceleration can improve the efficiency of traffic spatiotemporal data processing and have excellent concurrent processing capabilities. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

Although e-learning technology provides numerous benefits for educators, enticing students to use e-learning services is a challenge, particularly for the e-learning websites of higher education institutions in Malaysia. E-learning websites of Malaysian higher education institutions have few guidelines for user interface design that foster emotional engagement. Due to this problem, there is a significant percentage of student disengagement on e-learning platforms. A visualization pattern as a guideline has been proposed for designing an e-learning GUI website for HEIs in Malaysia. The proposed guideline has been implemented on the prototype website’s graphical user interface (GUI). The effectiveness of the GUI was evaluated using an electroencephalogram (EEG) device and resulted in 65% of the participants being in the ‘Most Effective’ category, with the highest average of most effectiveness standing at 32.6%. The research has demonstrated that the developed guideline increased student engagement with the GUI of the e-learning website prototype. The guideline is intended to assist higher education institutions (HEIs) and website developers and designers in creating e-learning websites that can sustain students’ interest in e-learning over time. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The Language of Infographics: Toward Understanding Conceptual Metaphor Use in Scientific Storytelling

We apply an approach from cognitive linguistics by mapping Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) to the visualization domain to address patterns of visual conceptual metaphors that are often used in science infographics. Metaphors play an essential part in visual communication and are frequently employed to explain complex concepts. However, their use is often based on intuition, rather than following a formal process. At present, we lack tools and language for understanding and describing metaphor use in visualization to the extent where taxonomy and grammar could guide the creation of visual components, e.g., infographics. Our classification of the visual conceptual mappings within scientific representations is based on the breakdown of visual components in existing scientific infographics. We demonstrate the development of this mapping through a detailed analysis of data collected from four domains (biomedicine, climate, space, and anthropology) that represent a diverse range of visual conceptual metaphors used in the visual communication of science. This work allows us to identify patterns of visual conceptual metaphor use within the domains, resolve ambiguities about why specific conceptual metaphors are used, and develop a better overall understanding of visual metaphor use in scientific infographics. Our analysis shows that ontological and orientational conceptual metaphors are the most widely applied to translate complex scientific concepts. To support our findings we developed a visual exploratory tool based on the collected database that places the individual infographics on a spatio-temporal scale and illustrates the breakdown of visual conceptual metaphors. © 2024, CC BY.

In the digital age, optimizing user experience (UX) is paramount for the success of various applications and interfaces. Eye-tracking, a method used to monitor and analyze eye movements, has emerged as a powerful tool in UX research. This study investigates the intersection of eye-tracking and image processing, focusing on how insights derived from eye-tracking data can enhance UX design. Through a series of case studies, this research explores the practical applications of eye-tracking in improving user interaction with image-based interfaces. By analyzing user attention patterns, gaze fixation durations, and visual engagement metrics, the study uncovers valuable insights into user behaviour and preferences. These insights inform design decisions related to interface layout, content placement, and visual hierarchy, ultimately leading to more intuitive and engaging user experiences. The findings from this study provide practical guidelines and best practices for integrating eye tracking into the UX design process, offering valuable insights for designers, developers, and researchers seeking to optimize user interaction with image-based applications and interfaces. © 2024 IEEE.

Feature selection is becoming an essential part of machine learning pipelines, including the ones generated by recent AutoML tools. In case of datasets with epistatic interactions between the features, like many datasets from the bioinformatics domain, feature selection may even become crucial. A recent method called SLUG has outperformed the state-of-the-art algorithms for feature selection on a large set of epistatic noisy datasets. SLUG uses genetic programming (GP) as a classifier (learner), nested inside a genetic algorithm (GA) that performs feature selection (wrapper). In this work, we pair GA with different learners, in an attempt to match the results of SLUG with less computational effort. We also propose a new feedback mechanism between the learner and the wrapper to improve the convergence towards the key features. Although we do not match the results of SLUG, we demonstrate the positive effect of the feedback mechanism, motivating additional research in this area to further improve SLUG and other existing feature selection methods. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Machine learning has advanced rapidly in recent technologies of artificial intelligence. The abundant and cheap computation in machine learning has created more knowledge and reliability of this method. Therefore, more researchers have relied on machine learning to solve plastic waste pollution, which contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions. Datasets are fundamental requirements to build the foundation of the plastic waste detection system. This paper provides an overview of several state-of-the-art deep learning models, focusing on the dataset used for waste classification and identification. The performance of each deep learning model in classification accuracy is also discussed. The challenges of implementing deep learning in plastic waste detection are identified;(i) Data deficiency for training, (ii) Quality of the existing plastic waste dataset, and (iii) Color spaces. Lastly, the proposed solution to each challenge is presented. © 2022 IEEE.

LEARNING SURROGATE EQUATIONS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF AN AGENT-BASED CANCER MODEL

In this paper, we adapt a two species agent-based cancer model that describes the interaction between cancer cells and healthy cells on a uniform grid to include the interaction with a third species – namely immune cells. We run six different scenarios to explore the competition between cancer and immune cells and the initial concentration of the immune cells on cancer dynamics. We then use coupled equation learning to construct a population-based reaction model for each scenario. We show how they can be unified into a single surrogate population-based reaction model, whose underlying three coupled ordinary differential equations are much easier to analyse than the original agent-based model. As an example, by finding the single steady state of the cancer concentration, we are able to find a linear relationship between this concentration and the initial concentration of the immune cells. This then enables us to estimate suitable values for the competition and initial concentration to reduce the cancer substantially without performing additional complex and expensive simulations from an agent-based stochastic model. The work shows the importance of performing equation learning from agent-based stochastic data for gaining key insights about the behaviour of complex cellular dynamics. © 2025, CC BY.
