learning about culture is essential, and expanding the methods of cultural education beyond traditional learning is crucial. Technology offers new opportunities to not only enhance cultural learning but also promote tourism by introducing cultural elements through innovative platforms. This study evaluates the usability of a web-AR app designed to introduce the Bajau Samah culture through folklore storytelling, providing both an educational tool and a tourism promotion method. The app consists of six pages, allowing users to interact with augmented reality (AR) by scanning markers. Users can zoom and rotate 3D models, listen to audio, and read accompanying narratives. A total of 33 participants took part in the usability study, with more than half of them having no prior experience with AR. The System Usability Scale (SUS) score was 83.5%, indicating good usability. While some usability issues were identified and suggestions for improvement were provided, overall, participants enjoyed using the web-AR app and found it effective in educating them about Bajau Samah culture through AR-folklore storytelling. ©2024 IEEE.

The purpose of this research is to develop a model that clarifies the role of personality traits, motivation, and lifelong learning in the context of distance learning. Specifically, the current study hypothesis that personality traits of extroversion, agreeableness, consciousness, neuroticism, and openness correlate significantly with individuals’ attitudinal-behavioral disposition of motivation, which would also impact lifelong learning. Due to the dynamic process of learning foreign languages and the belief that fluency in other languages offers economic benefits and practical applications, foreign language learning provides a suitable context for the present study. Therefore, we hypothesize that individuals who learn foreign languages are also the most likely to engage in lifelong learning. In addition, the data is collected by the fully online learning system as a result of the Covid 19 disease’s spread. This makes the study even more meaningful to the study of online learning and distance education. In the present study, seven latent variables are developed and tested, totaling 45 measurement items. The survey is conducted to 200 undergraduates from east Malaysia, and only students currently enrolled in foreign language courses will be chosen as respondents. The PLS-SEM will be used to analyzing the data, and we employ two-stage approach for data analysis: (i) measurement model and (ii) analysis of the structural model. The work will provide critical information and practical contributions in line with the Malaysia National Higher Education Strategic Plan—promoting the culture of lifelong learning in on-line context. © 2022 Association for Computing Machinery.

This study delves into the characteristics and emotional dimensions of New Chinglish, scrutinizing its expressive connotations. By examining the inner architecture of an emotion computation model, we propose a multi-layered cognitive affective computing model. This model integrates personality traits, mood states, and emotional conditions to refine the mapping relationship between PAD mood states and emotional responses. We introduce this multi-layer cognitive model as a novel method for preference mining, integrated with multi-objective decision-making processes. Additionally, we investigate the reception of New Chinglish among Chinese college students by examining various layers of engagement. We categorize the emotional types of New Chinglish utilizing the affective computing model, explore the students' reception towards positive or negative expressions, and analyze preference patterns based on the attributes of New Chinglish. The findings indicate a favorable overall acceptance of New Chinglish among Chinese college students, with average scores for usage attitude and behavioral intention being 3.215 and 3.236, respectively. The three most favored aspects are humor (2.7986), phonetic appeal (2.5805), and innovativeness (2.4325). © 2024 Xiaoman Liu, published by Sciendo.

Uncovering the relationships between agri-food commodities in Malaysia is instrumental for making informed decisions at various levels, from individual farmers to policymakers. It supports economic growth, sustainable practices, and the overall well-being of the population. Market basket analysis can be used to provide valuable insights into the relationships between different items in a dataset and can be used for decision-making, recommendation systems, and optimizing business processes. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationships between agri-food commodities in Malaysia as it provides insights into consumer preferences and behavior. The paper presents the findings obtained related to the application of Apriori algorithm to investigate the relationship between agri-food commodities bought in Malaysia for the whole year 2022. Datasets were collected from February 2022 through January 2023 which consists of 56878 number of transactions recorded with 324 number of unique items. This also will expose the purchase pattern behavior for all the households in Malaysia. Based on the findings of this paper, the extracted rule which has the highest LIFT’ value states that when chicken (Keratan Daging Ayam), other vegetables (Lain-lain Sayur-sayuran) and fish (Ikan) occur together, it is likely or observed that fruit (Lain-lain Buah-buahan) is also present. This rule has the highest LIFT’s value of 26.4 for the vegetable commodity. This paper also presented and described the relationships between five selected popular commodities with other commodities. The extracted rules can be applied to any small to large-scale agri-food shopping market or mall. For future works, a more comprehensive validation works is required to validate these extracted rules so that they can be applied by any private or public agencies in Malaysia. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Malaysia relies heavily on food imports, making it vulnerable to global market fluctuations and supply chain disruptions. Knowing which agri-food commodities are often consumed together or have complementary markets can inform export strategies and boost the agricultural sector’s economic contribution. Market basket analysis can be used to provide valuable insights into the relationships between different items in a dataset and can be used for decision-making, recommendation systems, and optimizing business processes. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationships between agri-food commodities in Malaysia for 13 states and 2 districts using Association rules, as it provides insights into consumer preferences and behavior. The datasets were collected from February 2022 through January 2023 from 13 states and 3 federal territories, which consists of 56,878 number of transactions recorded with 324 number of unique items. Based on the findings of this paper, it can be observed that the extracted rules for every state focuses on different types of agri-food commodities. These extracted rules can be applied for crop planning and production optimization, diversification of agricultural products, supply chain effficiency and local and sustainable agriculture activities. For future works, a more comprehensive validation works is recommended to be conducted to validate these extracted rules so that they can be applied by retailers in each state in Malaysia. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Student's Feedback on the Integration of Grammar Units and Occupational Topics in their Grammar in Practice Course: A Pilot Study

Students’ feedback of what constitutes useful, appropriate and relevant English course may have an impact on their learning of English. Against this background, this study explores the extent to which a specific Grammar in Practice subject meets the learning goals. It is important to note that because the primary purpose of such feedback is to improve the quality of the course and to provide direct feedback to teaching staff. In order to accomplish this, the objectives of the study focus on the students’ perception of the course content, the relevance of the grammar units, the relevance of the occupational topics and the relevance of the course content as a whole in relation to their future profession. To determine this, the students’ feedback is gathered from a group of TESL students taking the Grammar in Practice course in a form of questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of the Likert Scale and an open-ended questionnaire in which there are three main sections. The larger of these dealt with the aspects of the grammar units and occupational topics, and the third section is on the course reflection as a whole. The items were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences and statistical analysis. The results of this study revealed the students’ feedback of the Grammar in Practice course and their perception of the course content. The students perceived that the course content meets the objective and is relevant to their future profession.

Communicative Moves in Forestry Research Introductions: Implications for the Design of learning Materials

This paper reports on a genre-based analysis of the rhetorical moves in research article introductions (RAIs) in Forestry, an established applied science discipline. Based on Swales’ (2004) revised CARS model, this study covers 20 RAs collected from four high impact Forestry journals. Our findings indicate that although Forestry RAIs largely conform to the revised CARS framework, prominent variations in step occurrences are noteworthy in comparison to those in other disciplines. The incidence of centrality claims in Forestry is significantly higher than those in some established disciplines. Research niches in Forestry are predominantly established using gap indications and positive justifications, thus showing (i) considerable similarity compared to those in Wildlife Behaviour, and (ii) notable difference compared to those in Civil Engineering. Hypothesis formulation also appears in half of the Forestry RAIs, thus exhibiting a significant distinction in comparison to those in Wildlife Behaviour and Civil Engineering. In terms of method-related summaries, Forestry resembles Civil Engineering rather than Wildlife Behaviour, given that two-thirds of Civil Engineering RAIs included such summative methodological statements while none of the writers in Wildlife Behaviour considered it necessary to incorporate this step in the beginning of a research paper. Based on the findings reported in this paper, we argue that rhetorical strategies actually constitute a crucial aspect in which different scientific disciplines can be distinguished and recognised. More importantly, varying degrees of emphasis need to be placed on different rhetorical steps while language instructors design teaching materials aimed at guiding learners in the writing of research introductions in courses on English for Research Purposes (ERP).

Can’t Live without my FB, LoL: The Influence of Social Networking Sites on the Communication Skills of TESL Students

It is getting common to see two or more people sitting together at a café but not talking to each other because they are busy with their smart phones, tablets or laptops to browse through social networking sites (SNSs) like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace - just to name a few. Virtual communication seems to be more favourable to certain people as compared to face-to-face communication. This scenario may affect our communication skills since it is observed that face-to-face communication takes place lesser these days. The objective of this research is to investigate whether the frequency of using SNSs among TESL students and addiction to these sites (if any) influence their communication skills. A questionnaire was used to gather data from ninety three Semester 8 TESL students from the Faculty of Education, UiTM Shah Alam. SPSS version 16.0 was used to analyze and describe the data obtained. The findings show that the SNSs usage is moderately frequent because even though a majority of the students get connected to social networking sites on a daily basis, they only spend around 1-4 hours per session. It was also found that only a minority of the students is highly addicted to social networking sites. Most importantly, the study found a significant relationship between students’ frequent usage and their communication skills.
