Online shoppers purchase a wide variety of items ranging from books to electronics. Keeping in view of the large number of items available for online purchase, there is a need for sophisticated techniques to help users explore the available products. Composite items, which associate a central item with a set of packages formed by satellite items, can be used for this purpose. The existing approach for constructing and exploring composite items use a random walk algorithm for this purpose but has some problems. In this paper, we propose a statistically efficient algorithm to construct and explore the composite items in real time. The proposed approach considers that not only the price but also the quality of the product influences the consumer behavior. The experimental study is conducted to show that the proposed approach significantly improves the performance in terms of time, search space and the quality of the recommendation provided using the composite items over the existing method.

Adaptive systems are critical for future space and other unmanned and intelligent systems. Verification of these systems is also critical for their use in systems with potential harm to human life or with large financial investments. Due to their nondeterministic nature and extremely large state space, current methods for verification of software systems are not adequate to provide a high level of assurance for them. The combination of stabilization science, high performance computing simulations, compositional verification and traditional verification techniques, plus operational monitors, provides a complete approach to verification and deployment of adaptive systems that has not been used before. This paper gives an overview of this approach. © 2012 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

The growing popularity of 3-D movies has led to the rapid development of numerous affordable consumer 3-D displays. In contrast, the development of technology to generate 3-D content has lagged behind considerably. In spite of significant improvements to the quality of imaging devices, the accuracy of the algorithms that generate 3-D data, and the hardware available to render such data, the algorithms available to calibrate, reconstruct, and then visualize such data remain difficult to use, extremely noise sensitive, and unreasonably slow. In this paper, we present a multi-camera system that creates a highly accurate (on the order of a centimeter), 3-D reconstruction of an environment in real-time (under 30 ms) that allows for remote interaction between users. This paper focuses on addressing the aforementioned deficiencies by describing algorithms to calibrate, reconstruct, and render objects in the system. We demonstrate the accuracy and speed of our results on a variety of benchmarks and data collected from our own system. © 2011 IEEE.

High-resolution image collections pose unique challenges to analysts tasked with managing the associated data assets and deriving new information from them. While significant progress has been made towards rapid automated filtering, alignment, segmentation, characterization, and feature identification from image collections, the extraction of new insights still strongly depends on human intervention. In real-time capture and immediate-mode analysis environments where image data has to be continuously and interactively processed, a broad set of challenges in the image-driven verification and analysis cycle have to be addressed. A framework for interactive and intuitive inspection of large, high-resolution image data sets is presented, leveraging the strength of the human visual system for large-scale image processing. A case study is provided for an X-ray radiography system, covering the scanner-to-screen data management and representation pipeline, resulting in a visual analytics environment enabling analytical reasoning by means of interactive and intuitive visualization.

The automatic allocation of enterprise workload to resources can be enhanced by being able to make what-if response time predictions whilst different allocations are being considered. We experimentally investigate an historical and a layered queuing performance model and show how they can provide a good level of support for a dynamic-urgent cloud environment. Using this we define, implement and experimentally investigate the effectiveness of a prediction-based cloud workload and resource management algorithm. Based on these experimental analyses we: (i) comparatively evaluate the layered queuing and historical techniques;(ii) evaluate the effectiveness of the management algorithm in different operating scenarios;and (iii) provide guidance on using prediction-based workload and resource management. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. The European Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) in 2008 marked IS years of international and European CBR conferences where almost seven hundred research papers were published. In this report we review the research themes covered in these papers and identify the topics that are active at the moment. The main mechanism for this analysis is a clustering of the research papers based on both cocitation links and text similarity. It i.ç interesting to note that the core set of papers has attracted citations from almost three thousand papers outside the conference collection so it is clear that the CBR conferences are a subpart of a much larger whole. It is remarkable that the research themes revealed by this analysis do not map directly to the subtopics of CBR that might appear in a textbook. Instead they reflect the applications-oriented focus of CBR research, and cover the promising application areas and research challenges that are faced. It is important to quantitatively compare the effectiveness of different prediction techniques for use in cloud infrastructures. To help make the comparison of relevance to a wide range of possible cloud environments it is useful to consider the following. 1.) urgent cloud customers such as the emergency services that can demand cloud resources at short notice (e.g. for our FireGrid emergency response software). 2.) dynamic enterprise systems, that must rapidly adapt to frequent changes in workload, system configuration and/or available cloud servers. 3.) The use of the predictions in a coordinated manner by both the cloud infrastructure and cloud customer management systems. 4.) A broad range of criteria for evaluating each technique. However, there have been no previous comparisons meeting these requirements. This paper, meeting the above requirements, quantitatively compares the layered queuing and ("HYDRA") historical techniques - including our initial thoughts on how they could be combined. Supporting results and experiments include the following: i.) defining, investigating and hence providing guidelines on the use of a historical and layered queuing model;ii.) using these guidelines showing that both techniques can make low overhead and typically over 70% accurate predictions, for new server architectures for which only a small number of benchmarks have been run;and iii.) defining and investigating tuning a prediction-based cloud workload and resource management algorithm. © 2010 IEEE.

Existing file-based communication with spacecraft has tended to be an ad-hoc affair using bespoke protocols and operational procedures. Recent developments in space communication protocols promise to move this to a more capable and, through standardisation, re-usable basis. The CCSDS File Transfer Protocol (CFDP) is a standardised file transfer protocol for space, encompassing protocols and procedures for transferring files between ground and spacecraft, including via waypoints such as data relay satellites. Disjoint/delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) represents an evolution from CFDP and its store-and-forward capabilities through the introduction of a dedicated bundle protocol layer and, LTP, at the network layer, that is tuned for long-delay and disrupted communication links. Together these are enablers for a more automated communications architecture for transfer of data for deep space and planetary missions. However, as with the introduction of any new technology, their impact on existing practises and how they should be exploited must be carefully studied and planned for. SciSys, in conjunction with Keltik and Trinity College Dublin (TCD), is conducting just such a study for ESA's ESOC. This focuses on a two-stage roadmap of the initial application of CFDP to ESA-led missions and later the use of CFDP over DTN. This paper presents the conclusions from this study. © 2010 by SciSys UK Limited.

Several experiments have provided evidence that ego-centric distances are perceived as compressed in immersive virtual environments relative to the real world. The principal factors responsible for this phenomenon have remained largely unknown. However, recent experiments suggest that when the virtual environment (VE) is an exact replica of a user's real physical surroundings, the person's distance perception improves. Furthermore, it has been shown that when users start their virtual reality (VR) experience in such a virtual replica and then gradually transition to a different VE, their sense of presence in the actual virtual world increases significantly. In this case the virtual replica serves as a transitional environment between the real and virtual world. In this paper we examine whether a person's distance estimation skills can be transferred from a transitional environment to a different VE. We have conducted blind walking experiments to analyze if starting the VR experience in a transitional environment can improve a person's ability to estimate distances in an immersive VR system. We found that users significantly improve their distance estimation skills when they enter the virtual world via a transitional environment. © 2009 ACM.
