We present a software system that enables path-traced rendering of complex scenes. The system consists of two primary components: an application layer that implements the basic rendering algorithm, and an out-of-core scheduling and data-management layer designed to assist the application layer in exploiting hybrid computational resources (e.g., CPUs and GPUs) simultaneously. We describe the basic system architecture, discuss design decisions of the system's data-management layer, and outline an efficient implementation of a path tracer application, where GPUs perform functions such as ray tracing, shadow tracing, importance-driven light sampling, and surface shading. The use of GPUs speeds up the runtime of these components by factors ranging from two to twenty, resulting in a substantial overall increase in rendering speed. The path tracer scales well with respect to CPUs, GPUs and memory per node as well as scaling with the number of nodes. The result is a system that can render large complex scenes with strong performance and scalability. © 2008 The Author(s).

3D displays are coming phenomenon of the nearest future and it is expected that 3D displays will be widely available soon. There are currently some 3D displays available and also some notebooks with 3D display as Sharp AL3D. The viewing position is quite restricted spatially in the case of 3D displays and also the (visual information for the left eye is taken by the right eye and vice versa) causes some severe problems in 3D image perception. This paper addresses several issues concerning 3D perception based on stereo-images. Another issues related to 3D stereo video perception, like discontinuities between frames etc. are not described here.

Modern smart buildings utilize sensor networks for facilities management applications such as energy monitoring. However as buildings become progressively more embedded with sensor networks, the challenge of managing and maintaining the sensor networks themselves becomes ever more significant. As a cost-sensitive activity, facilities management deployments are less likely to deploy node redundancy and specialized technical staff to maintain these networks. Hence there are strong requirements for the network to efficiently self-diagnose, self-heal and integrate with standard buildings management systems. This paper introduces a solution for WSN management in smart buildings that addresses these issues. It is based on the deployment of the Open Framework Middleware for sensor networks coupled with a structured knowledge and rule-based fault analysis engine to perform network event correlation and root cause analysis. The system also explicitly interfaces with a Building Management System (BMS) or the scheduling of network maintenance activities such as sensor battery replacement. ©2009 IEEE.

A group key agreement (GKA) protocol allows a set of users to establish a common secret via open networks. Observing that a major goal of GKAs for most applications is to establish a confiDential channel among group members, we revisit the group key agreement definition and distinguish the conventional (symmetric) group key agreement from asymmetric group key agreement (ASGKA) protocols. Instead of a common secret key, only a shared encryption key is negotiated in an ASGKA protocol. This encryption key is accessible to attackers and corresponds to different decryption keys, each of which is only computable by one group member. We propose a generic construction of one-round ASGKAs based on a new primitive referred to as aggregatable signaturebased broadcast (ASBB), in which the public key can be simultaneously used to verify signatures and encrypt messages while any signature can be used to decrypt ciphertexts under this public key. Using bilinear pairings, we realize an efficient ASBB scheme equippe d with useful properties. Following the generic construction, we instantiate a one-round ASGKA protocol tightly reduced to the decision Bilinear Diffie-Hellman Exponentiation (BDHE) assumption in the standard model. © International Association for Cryptologic Research 2009.

We describe a method for computing an implicit function that represents a surface by its zero level set, given a set of points scattered over the surface and associated with surface normal vectors. This implicit function is defined as a linear combination of compactly supported radial basis functions. Our method is suitable for testing whether a given point is interior or exterior to the surface, previously only associated with globally supported or globally regularized radial basis functions. We use a two-level interpolation approach. In the coarse scale interpolation, we set basis function centers by a grid that covers the enlarged bounding box of the given point set and compute their signed distances to the underlying surface using local quadratic approximations of the nearest surface points. Then a fitting to the residual errors on the surface points and additional off-surface points is performed with fine scale basis functions. The final function is the sum of the two intermediate functions and is a good approximation of the signed distance field to the surface in the bounding box. Examples of surface reconstruction and set operations between shapes are provided. © 2007 IEEE.

In this paper, we show that the tracking performance of a hard disk drive actuator can be improved by using two adaptive neural networks, each of which is tailored for a specific task. The first neural network utilizes accelerometer signal to detect external vibrations, and compensates for its effect on hard disk drive position via feedforward action. In particular, no information on the plant, sensor and disturbance dynamics is needed in the design of this neural network disturbance compensator. The second neural network, designed to compensate for the pivot friction, uses a signum activation function to introduce nonlinearities inherent to pivot friction, thus reducing the neural network¿s burden of expectation. The stability of the proposed scheme is analyzed by the Lyapunov criterion. Simulation results show that the tracking performance of the hard disk drives can be improved significantly with the use of both neural networks compared to the case without compensation, or when only one of the networks is activated.

Natural neighbor interpolation methods, such as Sibson's method, are well-known schemes for multivariate data fitting and reconstruction. Despite its many desirable properties, Sibson's method is computationally expensive and difficult to implement, especially when applied to higher-dimensional data. The main reason for both problems is the method's implementation based on a Voronol diagram of all data points. We describe a discrete approach to evaluating Sibson's interpolant on a regular grid, based solely on finding nearest neighbors and rendering and blending d-dimensional spheres. Our approach does not require us to construct an explicit Voronoi diagram, is easily implemented using commodity three-dimensional graphics hardware, leads to a significant speed increase compared to traditional approaches, and generalizes easily to higher dimensions. For large scattered data sets, we achieve two dimensional (2D) interpolation at interactive rates and 3D interpolation (3D) with computation times of a few seconds. © 2006 IEEE.
