In open, heterogeneous, context-aware pervasive computing systems, suitable context models and reasoning approaches are necessary to enable collaboration and distributed reasoning among agents. This paper proposes, develops and demonstrates a novel approach to perform distributed reasoning by merging and partitioning context models that represent different perspectives over the object of reasoning. We show how merging different points of view contributes to an enhanced outcome in reasoning about context

Today's mobile users have access to a wide range of Web-based services. This paper presents our m-Tableaux algorithm for enabling cost-efficient and optimised semantic reasoning to support pervasive service discovery. We present performance evaluation of the m-Tableaux optimisation strategies which clearly demonstrate its operational feasibility on a mobile device.

Mining data streams for mobile and embedded applications faces a major problem represented in the high rate of the streaming input with regard to the available computational resources. Adapting the data mining algorithms to the availability of resources is an essential step towards realizing the potential applications in this area. In this paper, we review our Algorithm Output Granularity (AOG) for data stream mining adaptation. The generalization of AOG based on Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) learning model is presented. This generalization is of paramount importance to establish a theoretical framework for adaptation and resource-awareness in data stream mining.

Because of computational grid heterogeneity, scale and complexity, faults become likely. Therefore, grid infrastructure must have mechanisms to deal with faults while also providing efficient and reliable services to its end users. Existing fault-tolerant approaches are inefficient because they are reactive and incomplete. They are reactive because they only deal with faults when they take place; they are incomplete because they only deal with certain types of faults. Proactive approaches increase efficiency by reducing the cost and time of operations and network resource usage by maintaining the state of executing applications and resuming operation when rescheduled. This paper presents an agent oriented, fault-tolerant grid framework where agents deal with individual faults proactively. Agents maintain information about hardware conditions, executing process memory consumption, available resources, network conditions and component mean time to failure. Based on this information and critical states, agent can improve the reliability and efficiency of grid services

Component-based software engineering (CBSE) is concerned with the devel- ment of software-intensive systems from reusable parts (components), the dev- opmentofsuchreusableparts,andthemaintenanceandimprovementofsystems by means of component replacement and customization. Although it holds c- siderable promise, there are still many challenges facing both researchers and practitioners in establishing CBSE as an e?cient and proven engineering dis- pline. Six CBSE workshops have been held consecutively at the most recent six International Conferences on software engineering (ICSE). The premise of the last three CBSE workshops was that the long-term success of component-based development depends on the viability of an established science and technology foundation for achieving predictable quality in component-based systems. TheintentoftheCBSE2004symposiumwastobuildonthispremise,andto provide a forum for more in-depth and substantive treatment of topics perta- ing to predictability, to help establish cross-discipline insights, and to improve cooperation and mutual understanding. The goal of the CBSE 2004 symposium was to discuss and present more complete and mature works, and consequently collect the technical papers in published proceedings. The response to the Call for Papers was beyond expectations: 82 papers were submitted. Of those 25 (12 long and 13 short) were accepted for publication. In all 25 cases, the papers were reviewed by three to four independent reviewers. The symposium brought together researchers and practitioners from a variety of disciplines related to CBSE.

This paper presents an improvement to existing class test ordering strategies by including coupling measures to reduce non-determinism and decrease the number of stubs to be produced. Our novel strategy aims to lift the known methods from class hierarchies to component-based product lines in which so-called connectors between components are key entities for structuring, assembling and integrating software architectures, and in which tighter coupling of classes inside components and looser coupling between classes in different components are fundamental to component-based architecture composition. The paper also evaluates the new method and confirms the expected reductions in the number of stubs generated and the improved test ordering. Two recent test order strategies for C++ are compared with our novel approach through experiments conducted on two mini product lines written in Java. The new proposed test ordering strategy is more deterministic through measuring coupling, which is at the heart of component-based product line architectures.

This paper presents a simple and improved technique of interface fault insertion for conducting component integration testing through the use of aspect-oriented software development (AOSD). Taking the advantage of aspect's cross-cutting features, this technique only requires additional codes written in AspectJ rather than having a separate tool to perform this operation. These aspect codes act as wrappers around interface services and perform operations such as disabling the implementation of the interface services, raising exceptions or corrupting the inputs and outputs of interface services. Interface faults are inserted into the system under test to evaluate the quality of the test cases by ensuring not only that they detect errors due to the interactions between components, but they are also able to handle exceptions raised when interface faults are triggered.

Next generation ubiquitous computing will comprise of context aware adaptive applications and protocols. There is a need of a generic architecture to cater for the adaptation requirements of increasingly demanding real-time applications and increasing dynamic wireless networks. This paper discusses the adaptive approach supported by CA3RM-Com architecture. CA3RM-Com is the context aware architecture proposed for real-time communication in wireless networks. It addresses the context representation, context acquisition, context exchange, and context management. Specific details of the architecture and referring adaptations that CA3RM-Com can support are discussed. Moreover the extended simulation results of adaptive multi-homed Mobile IP are presented in this paper. © 2008 IEEE.

On the Monte Carlo Representation of Uncertain Spatial Constraints

We present a novel approach to the problem of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), that is not based on any of the three major SLAM paradigms: extended Kalman ﬁlters, particle ﬁlters and graph-based optimizers. In this approach, the uncertain spatial constraints are represented as ordered sets of Monte Carlo samples drawn from the space of coordinate frame transformations. Such a representation enables fusion of two or more spatial constraints even if they are correlated, under certain assumptions. The spatial constraints are organised in a compact data structure which models the full posterior over the robot's pose and landmark locations. The number of Monte Carlo samples necessary to accurately represent the posterior does not grow exponentially with the number of state-space dimensions as in conventional particle ﬁlters; in fact, it is a constant parameter. This data structure provides a constant time access to marginal distributions and a newly observed spatial constraint can be accommodated in time linear to the number of landmarks tracked, regardless of the number of spatial constraints that have been observed previously. We provide an experimental evaluation of the method, and discuss its strengths and weaknesses with respect to the well-established SLAM approaches.

Data classification has attracted considerable research attention in the field of computational statistics and data mining due to its wide range of applications. K Best Cluster Based Neighbour (KB-CB-N) is our novel classification technique based on the integration of three different similarity measures for cluster based classification. The basic principle is to apply unsupervised learning on the instances of each class in the dataset and then use the output as an input for the classification algorithm to find the K best neighbours of clusters from the density, gravity and distance perspectives. Clustering is applied as an initial step within each class to find the inherent in-class grouping in the dataset. Different data clustering techniques use different similarity measures. Each measure has its own strength and weakness. Thus, combining the three measures can benefit from the strength of each one and eliminate encountered problems of using an individual measure. Extensive experimental results using eight real datasets have evidenced that our new technique typically shows improved or equivalent performance over other existing state-of-the-art classification methods. © 2011 IEEE.
