This paper introduces a new method of extracting features of a signal called Bipolar Pulse Active (BPA) features. The BPA extracts information from signals and decomposes them, using a series of harmonically related periodic triangular waveforms, into a finite set of Pulse Domain features. The BPA features contain information such as the rate of change between amplitudes, durations and frequencies within the original signal. The transformed signals can be further processed for some desirable application. In this paper, BPA feature is modified to describe its energy spectrum to be used in the application of Voice Activity Detection (VAD) of a speech signal.

This paper presents the performance analysis of the novel constant envelope fractional waveforms in a distributed multiple input-multiple output radar system (DMRS) scenario. Waveform modulation is based on the Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT) using the fractional order as a degree of freedom and a modified version of Gerchberg-Saxton Algorithm (GSA) to apply similarity and constant modulus constraints. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the novel technique and its capability to provide a reliable and robust waveform generation tool.

This paper compares the authentication performance between three topological structures of the Pulse Active (PA) technique as applied to Electrocardiogram (ECG) biometrics. PA is a feature extraction method derived from the concept of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). PA decomposes an ECG signal into a series of output pulses based on the linear dependency constant setting between the ECG and the modulated signal. In this work, three types of periodic signals namely triangular, sinusoidal and cosine waves are assigned as the modulation signal of the PA topology. The authentication performance of these periodic signals to generate output pulses and feature vector are analysed and compared. In this work, PA topology using a triangular function as the modulation signal outperforms the use of sinusoidal and cosine waves in PA-ECG based authentication system

A novel stroke based sparse hybrid convolutional neural networks (CNNs) method is proposed for author classification of Chinese ink-wash paintings (IWPs). As Chinese IWPs usually have many authors in several art styles, this differs from real images or western paintings and has led to a big challenge. In our work, we classify Chinese IWPs of different artists by analyzing a set of automatically extracted brushstrokes. A sparse hybrid CNNs in a deep-learning framework is then proposed to extract brushstroke features to replace the commonly used handcrafted ones such as edge, color, intensity and texture. Using 120 IWPs from six famous artists, promising results have been shown in successfully classifying authors in comparison to two other state-of-the-art approaches.

Improved automatic speech recognition (ASR) in babble noise conditions continues to pose major challenges. In this paper, we propose a new local binary pattern (LBP) based speech presence indicator (SPI) to distinguish speech and non-speech components. Babble noise is subsequently estimated using recursive averaging. In the speech enhancement system optimally-modified log-spectral amplitude (OMLSA) uses the estimated noise spectrum obtained from the LBP based recursive averaging (LRA). The performance of the LRA speech enhancement system is compared to the conventional improved minima controlled recursive averaging (IMCRA). Segmental SNR improvements and perceptual evaluations of speech quality (PESQ) scores show that LRA offers superior babble noise reduction compared to the IMCRA system. Hidden Markov model (HMM) based word recognition results show a corresponding improvement.

A new algorithm for 3D throat region segmentation from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is presented. The proposed algorithm initially pre-processes the MRI data to increase the contrast between the throat region and its surrounding tissues and to reduce artifacts. Isotropic 3D volume is reconstructed using the Fourier interpolation. Furthermore, a cube encompassing the throat region is evolved using level set method to form a smooth 3D boundary of the throat region. The results of the proposed algorithm on real and synthetic MRI data are used to validate the robustness and accuracy of the algorithm.

Sensor signal processing for Defence (SSPD)

In this paper an efficient technique to generate novel libraries of phase-coded waveforms with constant envelope aimed at optimizing signal retrieval is presented. The modulation technique is based on the Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT), where the signal waveforms retain their constant modulus. Reconstruction of sequences from the FrFT based waveforms is explored by means of the Error Reduction Algorithm (ERA), while the constant envelope property is kept unchanged. Additionally comparison between reconstructed and original sequences is also carried out in terms of performance and cross-correlation properties of the signals. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the novel waveform libraries considering design parameters such as resolution, interfering power, orthogonality and signal bandwidth.

Modern radar systems, such as co-located or distributed MIMO radar, often operate in very hostile environments. In such a scenario the selection of the best waveform to be used is an important aspect in order to maximize the performance. In this paper we introduce the use of the Fractional Fourier Transform as a tool to generate libraries of phase coded waveforms. The analysis of the performance of the generated libraries demonstrates how the novel approach can introduce benefits for specific applications with a relatively simple effort and with limited or no extra resource requirement.

This paper presents a new transformation technique called the Pulse Active transform (PAT). The PAT uses a series of harmonically related periodic triangular waveforms to decompose a signal into a finite set of pulse active features. These features incorporate the signal's information in the pulse active domain, and which are subsequently processed for some desired application. PAT is non-invertible thus ensuring complete security of the original signal source. In this paper PAT is demonstrated on an ECG signal and used for biometric authentication. The new transformation technique is tested on 112 PTB subjects. It is shown in this paper that the new transformation has a superior performance compared to the conventional characteristic based feature extraction methods with additional security to avoid recovery of the original ECG.

A fundamental aspect in the hardware-software design of modern radar systems, for example MIMO or Low Probability of Intercept Radar, is to operate in electromagnetically crowded environments. Proper radar waveform design is central to effective solutions in such systems. In this paper cross-interference and waveform reuse for a set of waveform libraries based on the fractional Fourier transform are presented and analysed. The results demonstrate the potential of the novel libraries in increasing the number of available waveforms and for stealth transmissions.
