This paper introduces a multi-agent approach to adaptive, problem-based learning support based on context-centric view of tutorial interactions and Elaboration Theory (Reigeluth, 1999). It describes (i) a framework for describing and analysing resource-use inside a (computer based) tutorial, (ii) a novel idea for a computer-based learning activity configuration agent, (iii) an agent that adaptively suggests learning resources and activities to learners at run time, and (iv) an empirical study that tested the second agent.

This paper presents ongoing work on the design, development and evaluation of multimedia learning objects for mobile phones. Underpinning research data shows the value of this to students. The design issues raised in developing prototype learning objects are discussed, along with the resulting solutions. The development process is outlined, and a refined prototype has been evaluated by students, who have given very positive feedback, indicating that there is great potential in providing multimedia learning objects for students to use on mobile phones. Suggestions for further developing this work are discussed in the conclusion. © 2007 IADIS.

This paper describes the most recent phase in a mature e-learning project, in the area of reusable learning objects, that has attempted to bring about technological and cultural change. Following an overview of the project and organisational context, an institutional change model is described that helps managers and stakeholders to identify critical interactions among processes and that emphasises the need to recognise interdependencies among technology, practice and strategy. Our model places a premium on informal change, feasibility and sequence. The rest of the paper is organised around three key themes that emerged from practitioner accounts of a recent phase of the project;these are institutional change and resistance, a model for good practice and working with students to change their experience. The research method for the work described in this paper was interpretive, and involved the first author's attempts to understand members of the project team's definitions and accounts of the situation. Thus the rich accounts were further augmented by an interpretive phase that drew on the explanatory power of our change model. We conclude by (1) proposing that the inclusion of different stakeholders, and particularly the student voice, has provided the catalyst for change within the three partners of the CETL, and (2) suggesting that the crucial factors in change implementation are the coordination and dynamic extension of informal change processes which already exist. © 2007 British Educational Communications and Technology Agency.

This paper examines the following question: do learners appropriate ‘near future’ devices (Nokia N91s) in order to respond to a learning situation? Our approach was to design virtual-environment resources (learning objects) that were made available on devices that were also suitable for users to generate content in an active learning context. The paper presents the main results from a study of HE students undertaking an assignment using the N91s. By grounding our findings in the data we conclude that there does appear to have been substantial evidence of learners adapting the new devices to meet their own needs and some evidence of the resources being used to promote reflection. We also identified many learner ‘stories’ in terms of the affective response of students to the use of the mobile phones. Stories were seen as important because they represent ‘use genres’ which can be used by our planned context-aware system to offer services and functionalities to learners at the appropriate moment. © 2007 IADIS.
