Gravity currents modify their flow characteristics by entraining ambient fluid, which depends on a variety of governing parameters such as the initial density, ∆ρ, the total initial height of the fluid, H, and the slope of the terrain, α, from where it is released. Depending on these parameters, the gravity current may be designated as sub-critical, critical, or super-critical. It is imperative to study the entrainment dynamics of a gravity current in order to have a clear understanding of mixing transitions that govern the flow physics, the shear layer thickness, δu, and the mixing layer thickness, δρ. Experiments were conducted in a lock-exchange facility in which the dense fluid was separated from the ambient lighter fluid using a gate. As the gate is released instantaneously, an energy conserving gravity current is formed, for which the only governing parameter is the Reynolds number defined as Re = Uhν , where U is the front velocity of the gravity current, and h is the height of the current. In our study, the bulk Richardson number, Rib=gU0Hb2 =1, takes a constant value for all the experiments, with Ub being the bulk velocity of the layer defined as Ub=pg0H. Simultaneous Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) measurement techniques are employed to get the velocity and density statistics. A flux-based method is used to calculate the entrainment coefficient, EF, for a Reynolds number range of Re ≈400-13000 used in our experiments. The result shows a mixing transition at Re ≈2700 that is attributed to the flow transitioning from weak Holmboe waves to Kelvin-Helmholtz type instabilities. Following this mixing transition, the entrainment coefficient continued to increase with increasing Reynolds number owing to the occurrence of Kelvin-Helmholtz billows that promote small scale local mixing and cause another marked spike in the flux entrainment values. Relevance of Carbon Capture & Sequestration in India's Energy Mix to Achieve the Reduction in Emission Intensity by 2030 as per INDCs

Presently about 75% of the total primary energy demand in India is met by the fossil fuels. And as for electricity, coal is the largest source of electricity in India and will continue to be the major component in energy mix even by 2030. India is the 3 rd largest emitter of GHG and the emissions are expected to grow in future. As part of the “Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC)”, India has committed to reduce the emission intensity by 33-35% by 2030. The major focus of the mitigation strategy is on improving the energy efficiency and use of renewable sources of energy. The main objective of this work is to understand the potential role of Carbon Capture & Sequestration (CCS) in coal based power sources in order to meet the committed reduction in the emission intensity (INDC) by the year 2030. The analysis has been carried out under several scenarios characterized by assumptions regarding the GDP growth rate, the energy mix and carbon price. The results indicate that India can meet the INDC by 2030 without deploying CCS in the coal power plants under most of the scenarios. CCS may become relevant only under very stringent mitigation targets and substantially high carbon price scenarios. This analysis may provide useful insights in designing a roadmap for the development and deployment of various cleaner energy technologies, including CCS, so as to fulfill the INDCs as well to meet the future carbon mitigation targets.

Species' traits and environmental conditions determine the abundance of tree species across the globe. The extent to which traits of dominant and rare tree species differ remains untested across a broad environmental range, limiting our understanding of how species traits and the environment shape forest functional composition. We use a global dataset of tree composition of >22,000 forest plots and 11 traits of 1663 tree species to ask how locally dominant and rare species differ in their trait values, and how these differences are driven by climatic gradients in temperature and water availability in forest biomes across the globe. We find three consistent trait differences between locally dominant and rare species across all biomes; dominant species are taller, have softer wood and higher loading on the multivariate stem strategy axis (related to narrow tracheids and thick bark). The difference between traits of dominant and rare species is more strongly driven by temperature compared to water availability, as temperature might affect a larger number of traits. Therefore, climate change driven global temperature rise may have a strong effect on trait differences between dominant and rare tree species and may lead to changes in species abundances and therefore strong community reassembly.

Aim The urgency for remote, reliable and scalable biodiversity monitoring amidst mounting human pressures on ecosystems has sparked worldwide interest in Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), which can track life underwater and on land. However, we lack a unified methodology to report this sampling effort and a comprehensive overview of PAM coverage to gauge its potential as a global research and monitoring tool. To address this gap, we created the Worldwide Soundscapes project, a collaborative network and growing database comprising metadata from 416 datasets across all realms (terrestrial, marine, freshwater and subterranean). Location Worldwide, 12,343 sites, all ecosystem types. Time Period 1991 to present. Major Taxa Studied All soniferous taxa. Methods We synthesise sampling coverage across spatial, temporal and ecological scales using metadata describing sampling locations, deployment schedules, focal taxa and audio recording parameters. We explore global trends in biological, anthropogenic and geophysical sounds based on 168 selected recordings from 12 ecosystems across all realms. Results Terrestrial sampling is spatially denser (46 sites per million square kilometre—Mkm 2 ) than aquatic sampling (0.3 and 1.8 sites/Mkm 2 in oceans and fresh water) with only two subterranean datasets. Although diel and lunar cycles are well sampled across realms, only marine datasets (55%) comprehensively sample all seasons. Across the 12 ecosystems selected for exploring global acoustic trends, biological sounds showed contrasting diel patterns across ecosystems, declined with distance from the Equator, and were negatively correlated with anthropogenic sounds. Main Conclusions PAM can inform macroecological studies as well as global conservation and phenology syntheses, but representation can be improved by expanding terrestrial taxonomic scope, sampling coverage in the high seas and subterranean ecosystems, and spatio-temporal replication in freshwater habitats. Motivation Here, we make available a second version of the BioTIME database, which compiles records of abundance estimates for species in sample events of ecological assemblages through time. The updated version expands version 1.0 of the database by doubling the number of studies and includes substantial additional curation to the taxonomic accuracy of the records, as well as the metadata. Moreover, we now provide an R package (BioTIMEr) to facilitate use of the database. Main Types of Variables Included The database is composed of one main data table containing the abundance records and 11 metadata tables. The data are organised in a hierarchy of scales where 11,989,233 records are nested in 1,603,067 sample events, from 553,253 sampling locations, which are nested in 708 studies. A study is defined as a sampling methodology applied to an assemblage for a minimum of 2 years. Spatial Location and Grain Sampling locations in BioTIME are distributed across the planet, including marine, terrestrial and freshwater realms. Spatial grain size and extent vary across studies depending on sampling methodology. We recommend gridding of sampling locations into areas of consistent size. Time Period and Grain The earliest time series in BioTIME start in 1874, and the most recent records are from 2023. Temporal grain and duration vary across studies. We recommend doing sample-level rarefaction to ensure consistent sampling effort through time before calculating any diversity metric. Major Taxa and Level of Measurement The database includes any eukaryotic taxa, with a combined total of 56,400 taxa. Software Format csv and. SQL.
