Skill-based engineering is gaining attention as a means to increase flexibility and changeability in engineering industrial automation systems. This paper proposes the Skill-based engineering Model (SEM), which formally describes the core entities that play a role in skill-based engineering. Accordingly, we propose a four dimensional classification scheme for skills, and assess the suitability of a property model and OWL ontologies to describe and match skills. For each case, we identify a list of challenges that must be addressed to make skill-based engineering a reality in industrial automation systems. We believe that this paper can guide researchers to study various open aspects of skill-based engineering to make it feasible in complex industrial automation systems.

OPCUA is a promising candidate for achieving a vertical semantic integration of field devices in the next generation of industrial automation topologies. Microprocessing platforms embedded in sensors and actor do however not provide the memory and computing resources required to integrate OPC UA communication stacks. To enable the usage of OPC UA on limited platforms, this article introduces a dedicated, highly scalable hardware server stack, synthesizable on 75.800 μm 2 using 28 nm CMOS technology as well as FPGAs, that can process OPC UA as a peripheral component.

Furthermore, the increasing complexity of these projects makes it necessary to expose specification, implementation and conceptual errors as early as possible. Therefore, a well-established method is to carry out simulation experiments. This paper presents a concept for coupling already existing (domain-specific) simulation models that allow the integration of individual models in a co-simulation environment. A complete system simulation can take place in this environment. Therefore, the contribution of OPC UA as a generic middleware technology - a candidate for Industrie 4.0 scenarios that is being intensively discussed - is analysed. Through a prototypical implementation based on open62541, we can show a proof of concept by coupling different simulations (SIMIT and FMI instances). It also shows that our concept can be easily extended regarding the integration of new simulators.

In this study, Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs), which are powerful tools for graphical representation of knowledge, are analyzed from an ambiguity and fuzziness perspective. In conventional FCMs the causal strengths are represented with singleton (crisp) fuzzy numbers, but recently, other researchers proposed different FCM structures where uniform (interval) or triangular fuzzy numbers are used in causal strength representation. Here, FCMs are analyzed by means of fuzziness and ambiguity measures that are proposed in literature to investigate the capability of models to represent uncertainties. In addition, two new measures, called the average ambiguity measure (AAM) and the average fuzziness measure (AFM), are proposed to indicate uncertainty representation of an FCM. A well-known FCM model of a public health system is used as a case study to show how the fuzzy weights determine the uncertainty representation of FCMs, and then the outcomes are discussed.

Within the Semantic Web field, Linked Data is an emerging technology offering advantages in terms of flexibility and openness also for industrial environments. It provides a powerful information model with simple extension mechanisms and a cross-domain character, which makes it possible to span flexible information spaces across enterprise boundaries. Thus, it is able to represent all facets of a digital plant, like devices and processes. Although developed with the focus on static data, it is also capable of handling dynamic data if the latter is adapted appropriately. This article describes these requirements and presents a concept for integrating process data into the Linked Data information space. A separation between a semantic description of the access to process data and the service providing exactly this information allows efficient and integration-ready access to data. The necessary vocabulary is described as well as the information model. A prototypical implementation of OPC UA integration into Linked Data is presented. The article further discusses the current status of the approach and provides future research challenges.

As a standardized communication protocol, OPC UA is the main focal point with regard to information exchange in the ongoing initiative Industrie 4.0. But there are also considerations to use it within the Internet of Things. The fact that currently no open reference implementation can be used in research for free represents a major problem in this context. The authors have the opinion that open source software can stabilize the ongoing theoretical work. Recent efforts to develop an open implementation for OPC UA were not able to meet the requirements of practical and industrial automation technology. This issue is addressed by the open62541 project which is presented in this article including an overview of its application fields and main research issues.

This paper presents a study on the potential of today's smartwatches as a complementary user interface to mobile support systems for industrial maintenance tasks. Starting from challenges, usage scenarios and use cases for the valuable use of smartwatches in an industrial context, the various possibilities of information delivery, task support and processcontrol using smartwatches are evaluated and checked against basic ergonomic requirements on data pre-processing, user interface design and the hardware equipment. A prototypical implementation of a support system for industrial maintenance tasks illustrates the applicability of the derived interaction concepts and design guidelines for smartwatch-equipped mobile support systems.

Modern process plants are becoming more and more complex with high demands placed on design, engineering and operation. Throughout the life-cycle of process plants there is always the typical conflict involving costs, time and quality. One way of resolving this conflict is to employ simulation technology as it can be used to answer questions relating to engineering and operation earlier and with lower risks. In 2014, the authors conducted a global online survey investigating the current and future role of simulation within the life-cycle of a process plant. Based on the responses of more than 200 participants, fields of action and requirements have been drawn up to help reach the goal of continuously using simulation in the future. A first prototypical implementation towards concurrently using simulation within the life-cycle of a process plant is presented in this paper. This prototype uses tools for simulation, plant design and process automation that are available today and focuses on the engineering and operational phase of the life-cycle.
