As Smart Manufacturing, Industrial Internet, Industrie 4.0, and Cyber-Physical Production system (CPPS) are becoming reality, the way process and manufacturing plants are operated has to change. Additionally, these developments - constituting the pervasive digitalisation of industry - have a profound effect on the way human workers and machines interact. This paper contrasts the current state of the art in plant control with a vision for the future. The scenario is illustrated by a realistic problem-solving process in a chemical plant. It describes an integrated industrial information and interaction space that leverages emerging technologies to enable plant operators to remain in control of future flexible modularised process plants. Our approach shows the advantages of an integrated information space which feeds interaction and collaboration using Virtual Reality (VR), novel display technologies and mobile devices.

RESTful interfaces are a wide-spread architecture style for webservice implementations and are built upon the resource-oriented approach to decentralized architectures (ROA). REST postulates a set of requirements that are not covered by the OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) communication protocol per se. We propose a set of simple extensions to the OPC UA binary protocol that enable RESTful communication. The evaluation shows an order of magnitude improvement in the use of communication resources for sporadic service requests. Additionally, RESTful OPC UA allows applications to profit from the advantages of the resource-oriented architecture style, such as caching and loose application coupling.

Production plants within manufacturing and process industries are becoming more and more complex systems. For a safe and demand sufficient production the automation system of a production plant is mission critical. Therefore the correct functioning and engineering of the automation system is essential. Nowadays the use of a virtual commissioning step before deploying the automation software on the real production plant is used more often. Within the virtual commissioning the automation software is tested against a virtual plant model, sufficient to check out the correct functioning of the automation system. Usually virtual commissioning is used as a step at the end of the automation engineering, as proposed by VDI 4499. Within this paper an integrated virtual commissioning is proposed, where the automation software is continuously tested against a virtual plant model during the overall engineering phase. The virtual plant is growing together with the automation software and thus enables simulation supported automation engineering. Benefits of the proposed workflow are that errors can be detected immediately after the implementation and the use of the virtual plant model could be extended to various stages of the engineering workflow.

This paper discusses the application of modular and active learning concepts to courses in automation engineering for both vocational training and higher education. In the implemented concept, a course consists of several modular learning units that address different aspects of a single automation engineering process. To realize the complete cycle of activities every learning unit consists of a defined sequence of chapters, namely objectives, theoretical concepts, task definition, planning, and exemplary solution. The objective describes the contents so that the learner can decide if it matches his own objectives. Afterwards, theoretical concepts relevant to the objectives are presented to impart the basic knowledge. Now the definition of the tasks follows to realize the phase “recognition”. To combine the theory and the task the next part is planning to implement the phase “thinking”. Despite the fact that this phase is extremely important in the context of automation engineering, analysis of other course material and feedback from experienced trainers show that it is often skipped and is available only implicitly. By presenting one part of the solution the learner is led to a first solution. The presentation is done by structured step by step instructions so the learner can either follow every single item or only the main steps depending on his own level of knowledge. Eventually learners may evaluate a checklist to gain feedback which parts they managed and which ones they might want to repeat. After having finished the guided part successfully learners can switch to the exercises. Here they will get a task and need to plan their activities themselves. First evaluation results gained in a workshop with teachers support the hypothesis that the implemented concept is highly supportive.

This paper presents a study of the potential of integrated services for app-based system diagnosis using mobile information systems. First, a task and context analysis is provided for the application of integrated system diagnosis in the context of plant asset management (PAM). Second, exemplary scenarios are presented which demonstrate IT services for system analysis based on self-organizing maps, system diagnosis with a graph-based approach and support for therapeutic measures on defective assets. Third, a mobile information system is presented that allows users to list, describe, filter, and select assets, to browse through available diagnoses, and to follow step-by-step instructions for recommended therapeutic measures. The mobile information system provides a graphical representation, description, and selection of assets by using a P&I diagram as well as a chart visualization of process values. The system further provides access to both static and transient data sources such as engineering data of the plant, process data of the technical process and the results of complex analysis services. This mobile information system demonstrates the suitability of the proposed app-based approach. Finally, the results of a focus group workshop are summarized, showing the potential of mobile information systems in an industrial setting, barriers that still remain.

In this paper, the conventional Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs), which has already achieved success in many fields, are extended by using triangular fuzzy numbers (TFNs). The advantage of FCMs is that they are relatively easy to construct and parameterize and are capable of handling the full range of system feedback structure, including density-dependent effects. However, it is a well-known fact that there are some limitations inherent in FCM, such as lack of adequate capability to handle uncertain information and lack of enough ability to aggregate the information from different sources. Triangular fuzzy numbers which are represented by a triplet has the capacity to represent the uncertain relations between the concepts. In this context, the weight matrix representing the causal relations are enhanced to a fuzzy weight matrix that has TFNs as element. As a result of this improvement, the dynamic reasoning algorithm of the conventional FCM is improved for the use of the proposed novel FCM. The proposed FCM is presented via four simulations and the results are discussed. The results of the simulation study shows how easily the uncertain information can be represented and interpreted by the proposed FCM design methodology.

This study suggests a moving horizon H8 control scheme for variable speed wind turbines above the rated wind speed to maintain the output power at the rated value for variable operating points. A constrainedH8 control problem is solved at each sampling time with the update of not only the initial condition but also the prediction model based on different operating points. Closed-loop properties inclusive of L2 disturbance attenuation are discussed in the framework of dissipation theory. The moving horizon H8 control considers the non-linear dynamic aspect of the wind turbine, the turbulent nature of the wind and actuator saturations. Analysis and simulation results for WD34 wind turbine show possible improvements on the output electrical power regulation performance for variable operating points, while respecting actuator saturation limits. © The Institution of engineering and Technology 2014.

The paper is concerned with the problem of robust filtering for a class of systems with state-dependent uncertainties and energy-bounded disturbance. The state-dependent uncertainties can more precisely describe many practical dynamic systems with parameters varying with system states, such as spring stiffness, nonlinear resistor and friction coefficient. A non-quadratic Lyapunov function is adopted, upon which the sufficient condition for the filtering performance analysis is first derived. Then, the parameter-dependent full-order filter is designed such that the corresponding filtering error system is globally asymptotically stable and guarantees a noise attenuation performance index. A numerical example of a class of tunnel diode circuit systems is provided to show the effectiveness of the derived theoretical results.

In this paper, the problems of fuzzy modeling of activated sludge wastewater treatment processes and predictive control of dissolved oxygen are investigated. A structure identification algorithm is proposed, by which the structure of the fuzzy rules can be constructed according to the Activated Sludge Model No.1 (ASM1). Utilizing the fuzzy c-means cluster algorithm, the required fuzzy space of input variables is derived and the consequent parameters are identified using the method of least squares. Based on the obtained fuzzy model, the control signal is formulated by solving a convex optimization problem such that the dissolved oxygen concentration in an aerobic reactor of the wastewater treatment plant can be maintained at the set-point. Compared with the traditional PID control, the proposed fuzzy modelbased predictive control paradigm achieves satisfactory benefits in terms of both transient and steady performance.

Linked Data offers easy extensibility and interoperability of information spaces. This provides a great potential for industrial companies allowing to share information with partners in a virtual enterprise. Hence, together they can become faster and more flexible which results in an advantage in the market. However, there is still the barrier to protect own information with a fine grain. Access control graphs are an approach for this issue. Information is put into different views by executing infer mechanisms on role-based policy rules. Afterwards queries are automatically rewritten at runtime in order to match the generated views and provide only data from views that should be accessible by the authenticated role. This paper demonstrates the balance between flexibility and security using this approach. The amount and complexity of the policy rules are highly dependent on the information model used. However, a moderate restriction of the huge flexibility in the information modelling allows for few rules but those are powerful ones. Additionally, the approach allows can also be leveraged for consistency checking of Linked Data data structures. Thus, clients can rely on these information invariants and the information provider can rely on the fact that fine grained access is granted.
