This study presents the piezoelectric and piezoresistive properties of a multilayer composite system consisting of PDMS-CNT and PDMS-BTO layers designed for dynamic and static sensing applications. The carbon nanotube (CNT) piezoresistive layer enhances the electrical conductivity and mechanical response of the composite, while the barium titanate (BTO) piezoelectric layer provides high dielectric performance and efficient voltage generation. This unique combination exploits the complementary properties of each layer to achieve a synergistic effect that surpasses traditional single-material systems. The 15% BTO-0.3% CNT configuration demonstrated optimal performance, delivering a voltage output of 2.1 V, a power density of 1.41 µW/m 3 , and a noticeable change in impedance under mechanical stress. The results highlight the dual sensing capabilities of the composite, its mechanical robustness and its potential for energy harvesting, pressure sensing and structural health monitoring. This work highlights the potential of CNT-BTO composites as a platform for advancing next-generation sensing and energy systems, balancing innovation with practicality in multifunctional material design.

Quasi-static ultrasound elastography of ex-vivo porcine vocal folds during passive elongation and adduction

Objectives. The elastic properties of the vocal folds have great influence on the primary sound and thus on the entire subsequent phonation process. Muscle contractions in the larynx can alter the elastic properties of the vocal fold tissue. Quasi-static ultrasound elastography is a non-destructive examination method that can be applied to ex-vivo vocal folds. In this work, porcine vocal folds were passively elongated and adducted and the changes of the elastic properties due to that manipulations were measured. Methods. Manipulations were performed by applying force to sewn-in sutures. Elongation was achieved by a suture attached to the thyroid cartilage, which was pulled forward by defined weights. Adduction was effected by two sutures exerting torque on the arytenoid cartilage. A series of ten specimens was examined and evaluated using a quasi-static elastography algorithm. In addition, the surface stretch was measured optically using tattooed reference points. Results. This study showed that the expected stiffening of the tissue during the manipulations can be measured using quasi-static ultrasound elastography. The measured effect of elongation and adduction, both of which result in stretching of the tissue, is stiffening. However, the relative change of specific manipulations is not the same for the same load on different larynges, but is rather related to stretch caused and other uninvestigated factors. Conclusion. The passive elongation and adduction of vocal folds stiffen the tissue of the vocal folds and can be measured using ultrasound elastography. © 2023 The Authors

Vibrotactile Phantom Sensations in Haptic Wrist Rotation Guidance

Haptic motion guidance has the potential to advance assistive technologies that support humans in movement tasks. This study systematically evaluates wrist rotation guidance methods in a 2×2 repeated measures design using a wearable vibrotactile feedback device. In two tasks, we investigate the benefits of encoding the current target distance in the cue strength and conveying additional information about the target location by incorporating a tactile illusion known as phantom sensation. For a directional response task, we analyze reaction times and error rates, and for an angle targeting task, we examine rise time, settling time, and maximum overshoot of the normalized step responses. These objective criteria are complemented by subjective user ratings that assess the intuitiveness and ease of interpreting the vibrotactile cues. Feedback methods incorporating an adaptive amplitude perform significantly better in the angle targeting task compared to those using a constant amplitude. Additional improvements can be achieved by combining the adaptive amplitude with phantom sensations, including an average additional 24.3% reduction in rise time. Furthermore, more than half of the participants rate this combination as their favorite method. Altogether, the results underline the potential of incorporating phantom sensations in vibrotactile wrist guidance, thereby contributing to the advancement of wearable haptics in assistive applications. © 2025 IEEE.

Robust real-time model parameter extraction in inductive spectroscopy based on Artificial Neural Networks

Impedance spectrum modelling requires parameter extraction by solving the corresponding inverse identification problem, for which both gradient-based and stochastic methods have been proposed. Stochastic methods are more robust and have a lower risk of getting trapped in local minima but need a long calculation time. In this study, we examine the implementation of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in solving inverse identification problems in inductance spectroscopy, contrasting their performance with robust stochastic methods. In order to overcome the shortage of a representative amount of experimental data, we propose to use the analytically based model to generate accurate enough labelled data for the training process of the ANN. The artificial data have been structured in a homogeneous and tightly spaced grid in the parameter space, thus supporting the model’s generalisation and suppressing overfitting. ANNs with varied degrees of complexity have been investigated by modifying the number of neurons and evaluated by training and comparison with stochastic parameter extraction methods. The investigation concludes that, for the presented application in inductive spectroscopy, the neural networks can provide comparable parameter extraction results with a relative deviation of 0.03 % of the parameter value and a significant reduction in runtime from 60 s to 8 ms.

Passive wireless strain sensors based on microstrip patch antennas recently show significant promise for reliable health and performance monitoring in the aerospace and civil industries. Microstrip patch antenna consists of a metal patch, dielectric substrate, and metal grounding plate. When excited by the signal, an electro-magnetic resonant cavity is formed between the conductor patch and the grounding plate and radiates outward through the gap between the patch and the grounding plate. These antennas radiate at their resonant frequency. When the antenna experiences deformation, the antenna shape changes, causing a shift in the electromagnetic resonance frequency of the antenna. For this purpose, the antenna design is critical to influencing both RF characteristics and strain sensing behavior. In this work, a passive wireless strain sensor using a microstrip patch antenna with feed-inset operating at 2.8 GHz was designed and simulated in different simulation methods using simulation software CST Microwave studio and COMSOL Multiphysics. The simulation results were compared regarding the patch antenna's processing time, linearity, and sensitivity for strain sensing. Among these methods, strain and RF simulation of patch antenna using COMSOL software show better accuracy and linear response towards strain. © 2022 IEEE.

In this paper, an IoT and mobile based smart water level controlling system has been implemented to send alert notification message to the farmers and to deliver anytime information about the water level in order to fill the tank with the necessary water. This system allows continuous pouring of the required amount of water to crops, provides continuous control from overflowing and avoids lack of water in the tank, which can cause the damaging of the pump. To this aim, WeMos D1 mini was used to determine the water level inside a container based on data received from the connected polymer/CNTs nanocomposite sensor. The use of the nanocomposite sensor and WeMos D1 mini provide us a compact, cost effective and highly precise controlling system having very low energy consumption. © 2019 8th EnvImeko - IMEKO TC19 Symposium on Environmental Instrumentation and measurements. In this paper we introduce carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) hybrid nanocomposites based optical sensors. The optoelectronic responsivity was investigated in the near infrared NIR region. The sensors were prepared out of homogeneous dispersions of CNT and GO in aqueous solutions and they were then deposited on thin flexible substrate by drop casting. The optical sensitivity was measured using a laser diode with a wave length of 980 nm in air and at room temperature. Furthermore, UV-Vis-NIR measurements and scanning electron microscopy images are also investigated aiming to check the morphology and the quality of the dispersions. The films made by aqueous solution of graphene oxide and single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) showed a change in resistance up to 4% by laser illumination of 0.5 mW/mm2. Furthermore, the films made by physical mixing of CNT and graphene oxide were found more sensitive to IR radiation than those based on only CNT or GO materials. This is due to the flat photoresponse in wide range of the spectrum and enhanced absorption. A sensor made by SWNT/GO composite showed resistance changes of 37% under 1.5 mW/mm2of IR illumination at room temperature and the responsivity can reach up to 40 mA/W at laser illumination of 0.5mW/mm2. In addition, an improvement was already achieved by mixing both species in hybrid nanocomposites although further improvement is still also foreseen. Owing to their unique band structure and electronic properties, absorption in a wide range of wavelengths and enhanced optical properties of GO/SWNT nanocomposites make them suitable for optical sensors. © VDE VERLAG GMBH - Berlin - Offenbach.

In order to improve the piezoelectric properties of polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoro (PVDF-HFP), the composition of BCZT, text{Ba}{0.85} text{Ca}{0.15} text{Zr}{0.1} text{Ti}{0.9} mathrm{O}_3 which have interesting piezoelectric properties was prepared by sol-gel method then dispersed in PVDF-HFP. To achieve a good quality of the nanocomposite, the obtained BCZT was firstly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to get insight about its purity. Then, the powder was sonicated with different amplitudes before filling into the PVDF-HFP matrix. The effects of sonication amplitude on the structure, mechanical and piezoelectric properties of BCZT/PVDF-HFP composites were investigated. Three different tests for each composite with a specific amplitude (20 %, 30 % and 40 %) were conducted to give an overview of the particle distribution in the matrix. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that BCZT powder crystallizes in the pure perovskite structure. The tetragonal phase P4mm was identified and confirmed by Rietveld refinement. The electrical analysis reveals that the BCZT particles dispersed with 40 % amplitude show the highest conductivity which is the sign of good distribution of the particles in the PVDF-HFP polymer matrix. According to the mechanical analysis, low variation of Young's modulus for three composite tests for composite prepared with high sonication amplitude. As well, it is noted that increasing sonication amplitude improves both mechanical and piezoelectric properties. The present results provide an insight into optimizing composite materials to achieve better homogeneity, and on the other hand as promising candidates for electronic and energy storage devices. © 2022 IEEE.

Multi-coil wireless power transfer WPT systems have a lot of benefits compared to single coil WPT systems in the terms of power capacity, power transfer efficiency, and free position. In this paper, a comparative study of two different types of multi-coil WPT systems is proposed. The first system contains three transmitter coils on the primary side, while the other system contains one transmitter coil and two resonator coils. Both multi-coil WPT systems are studied in three different cases. The resonator coils lead to higher output power in addition to system efficiency when the receiver has misalignment with transmitter coils. When the receiver coil is aligned with the transmitter coil, resonator coils can decrease the output power and power transfer efficiency. The multi-coil WPT systems are working at a frequency of 6.78 MHz. Resonator coils are also designed under the operating resonance frequency. © 2022 IEEE.
