In this paper, a practical modeling approach for a batch-operated, stirred reactor is investigated that shows significant deviations in system behavior to the same actuation applied over multiple batches. Starting from an easily identifiable, sub-optimal, linear dynamical model to describe the basic dynamic behavior of the system, an augmented model reformulation is defined. This is used to model observed, nonlinear drift effects and static differences that can be seen in the system response over multiple batches, which can finally be estimated using an extended Kalman filter (EKF). The quality of this adaptive model approach that can be used in an online fashion is further assessed using a prediction error for all performed experiments. Copyright © 2025 The Authors.

In this paper, liquid-liquid-mixer systems modelled by population balance equations are considered. As the control input / manipulated variable, the stirrer speed (and hence the energy dissipation rate) is used to control the distribution of the particle size. Three different measurement signals are considered. We investigate the observability and identifiability of the system for each measurement option and show that only in one scenario the model is observable and structurally identifiable. Further, it is shown that in this scenario, practical identifiability is generally challenging and particular care must be taken to ensure the model with identified parameter values is able to describe the dynamic behaviour of the system.

The student's education conducted by the chair of process control engineering at RWTH Aachen University involves the two elements lecture and laboratory course. Due to the continuously rising number of students and the resulting variety of student's technical backgrounds, it is no longer possible to offer laboratory sessions to all registered students. As a result, we established a framework that allows the students to experiment by using the theoretical principles from the lecture without having to participate in the laboratory courses. That means, the framework has to cover a whole range of different aspects involving the planning and engineering of a plant by means of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, the physical simulation and the eventual implementation of the automation application. Our framework concept, while not originally part of the Blended Learning project, represents a teaching program that well aligns with the Blended Learning approach supported by RWTH Aachen University. © 2016

The use of distributed optimization in machine learning can be motivated either by the resulting preservation of privacy or the increase in computational efficiency. On the one hand, training data might be stored across multiple devices. Training a global model within a network where each node only has access to its confidential data requires the use of distributed algorithms. Even if the data is not confidential, sharing it might be prohibitive due to bandwidth limitations. On the other hand, the ever-increasing amount of available data leads to large-scale machine learning problems. By splitting the training process across multiple nodes its efficiency can be significantly increased. This paper aims to demonstrate how dual decomposition can be applied for distributed training of K-means clustering problems. After an overview of distributed and federated machine learning, the mixed-integer quadratically constrained programming-based formulation of the K-means clustering training problem is presented. The training can be performed in a distributed manner by splitting the data across different nodes and linking these nodes through consensus constraints. Finally, the performance of the subgradient method, the bundle trust method, and the quasi-Newton dual ascent algorithm are evaluated on a set of benchmark problems. The main benefit stemming from the formulation of the clustering problem as a mixed-integer program and from the use of dual decomposition within a federated learning framework, apart from the preservation of privacy, is the computation of a lower bound of the objective of the overall clustering problem. In this way, the worst-case distance of any found solution to the global optimum can be easily assessed. While the mixed-integer programming-based formulation of the clustering problems suffers from weak integer relaxations, the presented approach can potentially be used to enable an efficient solution in the future, both in a central and distributed sett

As an approach to cope with rising volatility of sales markets and increasingly shorter development cycles, process industries are expecting much from the concept of modularization. However, a topic that is still rarely focused in this context is safety. Therefore, this paper is focused on the expected challenges of engineering functional safety including the architectures of safety instrumented systems, and the requirements of modularization. Possible architectures are presented and discussed in relation to the requirements of functional safety in modular process plants. © 2015

Most accidents in chemical plants are caused by human errors. A common source of human error is lack of information. By integrating additional high quality information into the human machine interface, decision-making could be better supported and improved. Our approach strives to preserve the information gathered in the hazard and risk assessment for the operation phase. In this contribution,we present the developed formal models and tools to support transformation of the results of a conventional HAZOP study. That makes it possible to link the analysis to subsequent refinements and implementation steps of the Cause and Effect matrix. This transformation approach provides unique *** not constraining human creativity, it provides a consistent way to integrate new and modified safety functions from repeated and updated hazard and risk assessments. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

A game-theoretic model for the study of dynamic networks is analyzed. The model is motivated by communication networks that are subject to failure of nodes and where the restoration needs resources. The corresponding two-player game is played between "Destructor" (who can delete nodes) and "Constructor" (who can restore or even create nodes under certain conditions). We also include the feature of information flow by allowing Constructor to change labels of adjacent nodes. As objective for Constructor the network property to be connected is considered, either as a safety condition or as a reachability condition (in the latter case starting from a non-connected network). We show under which conditions the solvability of the corresponding games for Constructor is decidable, and in this case obtain upper and lower complexity bounds, as well as algorithms derived from winning strategies. The different models of information systems in process automation complicate the cooperation of associated functionalities. Because of the wide information focus it is impossible to find a single completely detailed model for all applications of process automation. Thus the development of infrastructure models is a possibility to define a common understanding of basic aspects of the different functionalities. The here introduced model for hybrid components defines basic elements of information systems with a modular runtime behaviour and can be used as an implementation framework. To define a comprehensive infrastructure model it is essential to consider hybrid dynamics.

Digitalization is a driving force for new applications of artificial intelligence in the industrial context. In the last decade new and optimized machine learning methods, tools and corresponding Hardware became available. But their utilization in industrial applications is very challenging, due to different requirements and conditions. In order to bridge that gap, trained machine learning algorithms need to be integrated in current control system environments, which implies a setup of the application program based on components of similar interfaces and a standardized behavior. Hence, a mapping of well-known and broadly applied state machines, such as the ANSI/ISA-88 (also known as PackML) states and modes for batch control, to generic interactions of reinforcement learning algorithms is presented in this contribution. Additionally, a simplistic proof of concept using reinforcement learning in a simulation of a coil transport system for cold rolling steel mills is shown. Moreover, the interaction of a reinforcement learning agent with its standardized state machines is described for learning and interference phases. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
