Average Communication Rate for Networked Event-Triggered Stochastic control Systems

Quantifying the average communication rate (ACR) of a networked event-triggered stochastic control system (NET-SCS) with deterministic thresholds is challenging due to the non-stationary nature of the system's stochastic processes. For a NET-SCS, the propagation of nonlinear statistics of the network communication status brought up by deterministic thresholds makes the precise computation of ACR difficult. Previous work used to over-simplify the computation using a Gaussian distribution without incorporating this nonlinearity, leading to sacrificed precision. This paper proposes a novel approach to calculate the exact ACR for a NET-SCS using a recursive model. We use theoretical analysis and a numerical study to qualitatively evaluate the deviation gap of the conventional approach that ignores the side information. The accuracy of our proposed method, alongside its comparison with the simplified results of the conventional approach, is validated by experimental studies. Our work is promising to benefit the efficient resource planning of networked control systems with limited communication resources by providing accurate ACR computation. © 2025 IEEE.

Abstract: This article proposes a technique for assessing risks related to operational reliability levels of systems of electric interlocking of track switches and signals at railroad stations. The assessment relies on the mathematical model of such random processes as failures and recoveries of the system of electric interlocking of track switches and signals and on using this system to fulfill train traffic control functions at a given station. The risk related to the operational safety of the electric interlocking system is calculated for the railroad station in general, not for a specific scenario of events. The statistics of safety violation events is based on a small sample. The risk related to the operational reliability of the electric interlocking system is assessed using risk matrices in the form of tables, where the likelihood of occurrence and the number of train delays at the station due to failures in the electric interlocking system are used together. The train delay likelihood found from the matrix is used as the frequency of events to assess operational reliability level risks. The number of trains delayed per calculated period and the average time of train delay at the considered station are used as event aftereffects. The assessment results can be used to make valid managerial decisions. © 2018, Allerton Press, Inc.

Signal processing and feature extracting are two of the most important issues for carbon fiber reinfored polymer (CFRP) when establishing a relationship between a specific damage mechanism and its acoustic signature. Non-stationary acoustic emission (AE) signals are still hard to be precisely characterized with simple and direct signal processing. Proper feature extraction can assist signal processing methods to get more suitable characteristics for complex non-stationary AE signals which include various damage modes. In this paper, a new energy-difference-based wavelet packet transform (WPT) feature extraction method is proposed to solve the deficiencies of the existing methods. For comparing the performance of the new feature proposed, WPT coefficients-based features and frequency-band-based features are also used for classification of four damage modes including delamination, debonding, fiber breakage, and void. Support vector machines (SVMs) are trained to analyze the effectiveness of these three features. Experimental results show that the energy-difference-based WPT feature over-performs the other two WPT-based features with higher average classification accuracy of the four kinds of AE signal. © 2018 ***. Differential flatness has been defined in the literature for continuous time dynamical systems and for discrete time systems. We define flatness of automata from the perspective of behavioral systems theory, and synthesize a flatness definition for hybrid automata. These new definitions allow for feedforward trajectory generation for flat hybrid automata. Additionally, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions of hybrid automaton flatness for different types of continuous state constraints and switching conditions, and how to compute whether a hybrid automaton is flat. We illustrate feedforward trajectory generation based on our findings for a robotic manipulator example. © 2024 IEEE.

A nonlinear controller structure for an overhead crane is designed and implemented on a crane plant. The energy based stabilizing controller part is derived by the method of controlled Lagrangians. In that framework, kinetic and potential shaping is performed and so-called general matching conditions are employed. control parameters well suited for the practical implementation are found by optimization using the linearization of the closed loop system. Nonlinear damping effects are counteracted in the overall controller structure by feedforward compensation and a reduced nonlinear disturbance observer.

The growth modelling of the bacterium Photorhabdus luminescens is proposed. Cultivation in liquid culture of the bacterium used in biological pest control is strongly influenced by the control inputs pH value and substrate concentration. Two modelling strategies-formal kinetic approach and model based gas analysis-are presented to mathematically describe the bacterial growth as a function of the substrate concentration. The biomass concentration and the substrate consumption can be estimated by using a combination of these approaches.

In this paper, learning of the FCMs represented using triangular fuzzy numbers (TFNs) in their weight matrices is studied. For this aim a population based novel learning approach is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, BB-BC optimization method is preferred because of its fast convergence capability. Moreover, this proposed approach involves concept by concept (CbC) learning to increase the accuracy of the learning of FCMs. Two different tests are realized as case studies for investigating the performance of the learning approach. For the first test, the learning capability of the algorithm is examined and for the second test the performance of generalization capability is investigated. The tests, which are presented via tables and figures, show that learning approach is successful for learning of FCMs with TFNs. Furthermore, from the case study it can be seen that the uncertain information can be represented and interpreted by the proposed FCM design methodology in a more efficient way.

Today Coriolis meters offer the best performance in mass flow measurement. For those applications, where accuracy, low pressure drop and good cleanability is needed, the single straight tube is the best alternative. The tubes oscillate in resonance and the resonance frequency provides information about fluid's density, which is besides mass flow also an important parameter for quality and process control. A shortcoming of Coriolis mass flowmeters for density measurement is the lack of a sophisticated compensation method taking into account the dependency of the resonance frequency on temperature, flowrate, pressure, viscosity etc. In fact several heuristic methods are in use to achieve good solutions to correct the density readings. However, these methods are complex, device specific and expensive. In this paper, a method is presented to overcome these drawbacks. It is based on a dynamic model of the mass flowmeter and allows for parameter identification of the measuring tube during operation. To be more specific, the effective spring constant of the oscillating tube is detected online. Using this result, the vibrating mass and subsequently the density of the fluid are calculated taking into account the resonance frequency

The paper considers the design of a nonlinear controller for the double inverted pendulum (DIP), a system consisting of two inverted pendulums mounted on a cart. The swingup controller bringing the pendulums from any initial position to the unstable up-up position is designed based on passivity properties and energy shaping. While the swingup controller drives the DIP into a region of attraction around the unstable up-up position, the balance controller designed on the basis of the linearized model stabilizes the DIP at the unstable equilibrium. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed nonlinear design method for the DIP system.

In this paper, a model based fed-batch strategy for the cultivation of the bacterium Photorhabdus luminescens is proposed. The development of an appropriate trajectory for bacterial growth and substrate feed rate can be obtained using the theory of flat systems introduced by Fliess et al. (1992). To avoid deviations from a desired trajectory caused by model uncertainties or disturbances, a nonlinear controller is presented allowing closed loop control of the fermentation process.
