On 18 August 2005, one of the biggest power outages in world history occurred in Java-Bali power grids system in Indonesia which impacts on almost 100 billion people for about 3 hours. A failure in the 500 kV transmission line between Saguling-Cibinong has caused the transmission line to break down resulting in the power grid network to dissolve into two separate networks, which in the end led to cascading failure along the whole grid. Power grid topology plays an important role in determining system behavior when one or more connections failed and impacting the whole network. In the worst case, cascading failure might take place which disturbs the whole networks. The objectives of the paper are to understand how a cascading failure incident takes place in power grids and find the correlation between key parameters using complex network theory to improve power grids robustness. The paper concentrate on an edge-based attack model as it has a resemblance with the Java-Bali power outages incident in 2005. The result indicates characteristics of small-world network from Java-Bali power grid, with different tunable parameters and load ratios, have an impact on network cascading failure likelihood. © 2019 IEEE.

Each generation of the wireless communication networks has contiguous demands for higher computing capabilities and lower the power consumption in the integrated circuitry. Thus, the optimization of the base-band signal processing kernels and the hardware architectures plays a pivotal role in the performance, latency, and energy efficiency of the Physical Layer (PHY). Channel Estimation (CE), a computationally intensive task with hard real-time requirements, involves significant amounts of matrix multiplications and inversions, when data flows between transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX). In this work, we present a software implementation of CE for the 5th Generation Cellular networks (5G) New Radio (NR) in the Reduced Instruction Set computer (RISC)-V architecture, showcasing how its vector processing capabilities can satisfy the throughput and delay requirements of 5G use cases. Specifically, we ported two CE kernels, the Least-Squares (LSE) and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE), onto a state-of-the-art single core vector processor. By exploiting data vectorization, the ARA core computes matrix arithmetic operations on multiple data sets simultaneously. Our single vector core serial optimization demonstrates that with a 16× 16 matrix window size and 16 vector lanes, the application's performance achieves a speedup of 78.27 when computing the LSE algorithm. When the number of operations per cycle are compared, the vector processor outperforms its scalar counterpart by 181.91 for the MMSE kernel. Our implementation orders the nested loops in a latency-reducing fashion to compute matrix arithmetic operations, resulting in LSE and MMSE estimator computing times of 8.44 μiota s and 12.31 μs, respectively. © 2024 IEEE.

—Fulcrum combines two encoding stages, first using one high Galois field, such as GF(28) and then with the binary Galois field GF(2). This allows intermediate and end devices, depending their computation power, to select either field to recode and decode coded packets. To ensure a high decoding probability, Fulcrum codes introduce r expansion packets at the outer coding stage, to increase the chance of producing linearly independent packets. However, the fixed number r hinder the chance of obtaining both high decoding probability and efficient transmission at a reduced computation complexity. We propose tunable expansion packet (TEP) protocols, which adjust the extra coefficients in the outer coding stage based on feedback from receivers. Comprehensive evaluations show that TEP protocols significantly increase goodput and reduce computation complexity while maintaining a low overhead. © VDE VERLAG GMBH.

In this paper it is proposed an approximate method of calculations of occupancy distribution and blocking probability in a generalized model of a limited-availability group. The basis of the proposed method is a new algorithm of state-passage probabilities estimation in the limited-availability group. The algorithm is based on the convolution operation of distributions of unavailable resources in the limited-availability group for calls of offered traffic classes. The proposed algorithm is characterized by low order of computational complexity.

The paper presents a model of a group of cells, exploiting the effects of connection handoff between cells, aimed at increasing the traffic capacity of a system. The analytical model proposed is based on the model of limited-availability group, which makes it possible to determine basic traffic characteristics in the system under consideration. The results of analytical calculations of blocking in a group of UMTS cells were compared with simulation data.

This paper presents an analytical model of multiservice systems with multi-service traffic sources that generate call streams according to the Poisson distribution, binomial distribution and negative binomial distribution. A particular attention is given to modelling of the influence of threshold mechanisms that control access of calls of particular traffic classes to resources of network nodes. Additionally, the paper proposes a method for a determination of traffic characteristics of switching networks with threshold mechanisms and multiservice traffic sources that are a key element of modern network nodes. The method developed by the authors is based on the concept of effective availability. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method appropriate, original computational and simulation programs have been used. The results obtained by the analytical model are compared with the results of the simulation experiments. The study confirms high accuracy of the proposed methods for a determination of the blocking probability in switching networks with multi-service traffic sources and threshold mechanisms.

This article proposes a new analytical method for the determination of traffic characteristics in multi-stage switching networks with multiservice traffic sources and implemented reservation mechanisms. The method proposed in the article provides a set of well-defined actions which can be performed to determine the point-to-group blocking probability in switching networks with resource reservation in which each single traffic source can generate calls of different service classes. The results of the analytical calculations of the point-to-group blocking probability are compared with the results yielded during the simulation experiments. The simulation results indicate high accuracy of the proposed method. The simulator was written in C++ using object-oriented programming.

Video-on-Demand (VoD) system have become increasingly popular over time. Currently constructed systems offer to their users a vast array of multimedia content spanning movies, video clips, TV programs, etc. that is made available through many video servers. One of the very important parameters at the initial stage of the system design is the blocking probability that follow the instances of unavailability of service resulting from the lack of provision of access to a given content. This parameter can be defined by means of appropriate tools, i.e. analytical models of systems, that enable to determine the level of losses in a system under design in relation to offered access demand and usage. The paper presents a new method for modelling of distributed Video-on-Demand systems. The proposed method is based on Erlang's Ideal Grading (EIG) with differentiated availability. Until now, Erlang's ideal gradings have not been used in modelling systems such as VoD.

The article proposes a new method for calculating occupancy distribution and blocking/loss probability in the limited availability group with bandwidth reservation. The proposed method makes it possible to model groups servicing multi-service BPP traffic streams (Binomial-Poisson-Pascal). The proposed method is based on the analysis of the service process occurring in the considered system on the basis of the one-dimensional Markov chain. Significant increase in the accuracy and precision of the proposed method, in relation to other methods known from the literature, was obtained as the result of a modification of service streams within the reservation space. The accuracy of the proposed method has been verified by simulation studies.

This article proposes a new calculation method for a determination of traffic characteristics in switching networks with multiservice traffic sources carrying multicast traffic. The analytical method described in the paper can be used to determine the point-to-point blocking probability in switching networks with multicast connections. In this method, each traffic source can generate calls of different service classes. The proposed calculation method is approximate, therefore the results of calculations are compared with the results of simulation experiments. The simulation results confirm acceptable accuracy of the proposed analytical method.
