A Hardware Trojan Attack on FPGA-Based Cryptographic Key Generation: Impact and Detection

True Random Number Generator (TRNG) circuits are important components of cryptographic systems. Lack of statistical randomness in the generated bitstreams from a TRNG can result in compromised keys, leading to serious security breaches. In this paper, we describe a Hardware Trojan Horse (HTH)-based attack on the TRNG of an FPGA-based cryptosystem, that results in reduced entropy and increased predictability of the generated keys. The proposed HTH does not cause any functional failure in the cryptosystem, and its impact is undetectable by analysis of the compromised bitstream using standard statistical randomness testing software suites (NIST, two enhanced versions of NIST Dieharder, and LIL-tests), and by a circuit-level HTH detection technique using Transition Effect Ring Oscillator (TERO). Finally, we show that the impact of the HTH can be detected by applying Wavelet Transform on the compromised bitstream.

ARETE (Augmented Reality Interactive Educational System) is a European project, which aims to develop an interactive toolkit for Augmented Reality (AR) content. In this work in progress paper, we describe the system which is currently being developed. The ARETE system follows human-centered interaction design practices and has a strong focus in interactive, multi-user and multi-lingual technologies. On completion, the system will be evaluated across three pilot studies. The three pilots will involve more than 3000 students across ten European countries and they will assess the impact of usage of the ARETE system and the educational value of AR for English literacy skills, STEM (science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills and in the implementation of Positive Behaviour Support in Schools (PBIS). ARETE will also be involved in the implementation of new standards for the creation of cross platform content and services as well as the creation of learning experience data repositories.

The urban parking spaces for loading/unloading are typically over-occupied, which shifts delivery operations to traffic lanes and pavements, increases traffic, generates noise, and causes pollution. We present a data analytics based routing optimization that improves the circulation of vehicles and utilization of parking spaces. We formalize this new problem and develop a novel multivehicle route planner that avoids congestions at loading/unloading areas and minimizes the total duration. We present the developed tool with an illustration and analysis for the urban freight in the city of Barcelona, which monitors tens of thousands of deliveries every day. Our system includes an effective evaluation of candidate routes by considering the waiting times and further delays of other deliverers as a first class citizen in the optimization. A two-layer local search is proposed with a greedy randomized adaptive method for variable neighborhood search. Our approach is applied and validated over data collected across Barcelona's urban freight transport network, which contains 3,704,034 parking activities. Our solution is shown to significantly improve the use of available parking spaces and the circulation of vehicles, as evidenced by the results. The analysis also provides useful insights on how to manage delivery routes and parking spaces for sustainable urban freight transport and city logistics.

Time-varying metasurfaces are emerging as a powerful instrument for the dynamical control of the electromagnetic properties of a propagating wave. Here we demonstrate an efficient time-varying metasurface based on plasmonic nano-antennas strongly coupled to an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) deeply subwavelength film. The plasmonic resonance of the metal resonators strongly interacts with the optical ENZ modes, providing a Rabi level spitting of ∼30%. Optical pumping at frequency ω induces a nonlinear polarization oscillating at 2ω responsible for an efficient generation of a phase conjugate and a negative refracted beam with a conversion efficiency that is more than 4 orders of magnitude greater compared to the bare ENZ film. The introduction of a strongly coupled plasmonic system therefore provides a simple and effective route towards the implementation of ENZ physics at the nanoscale.

Topology control for energy-efficient localization in mobile underwater sensor networks using stackelberg game

The characteristics of mobile Underwater Sensor Networks (UWSNs), such as low communication bandwidth, large propagation delay, and sparse deployment, pose challenging issues for successful localization of sensor nodes. In addition, sensor nodes in UWSNs are usually powered by batteries whose replacements introduce high cost and complexity. Thus, the critical problem in UWSNs is to enable each sensor node to find enough anchor nodes in order to localize itself, with minimum energy costs. In this paper, an Energy-Efficient Localization Algorithm (EELA) is proposed to analyze the decentralized interactions among sensor nodes and anchor nodes. A Single-Leader-Multi-Follower Stackelberg game is utilized to formulate the topology control problem of sensor nodes and anchor nodes by exploiting their available communication opportunities. In this game, the sensor node acts as a leader taking into account factors such as 'two-hop' anchor nodes and energy consumption, while anchor nodes act as multiple followers, considering their ability to localize sensor nodes and their energy consumption. We prove that both players select best responses and reach a socially optimal Stackelberg Nash Equilibrium. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed EELA improves the performance of localization in UWSNs significantly, and in particular the energy cost of sensor nodes. Compared to the baseline schemes, the energy consumption per node is about 48% lower in EELA, while providing a desirable localization coverage, under reasonable error and delay. Therapeutic issues are commonly found in every single person. Tumor is a standout among the most unsafe sicknesses a human can ever had. It is exceptionally hard to distinguish it in its beginning times as its side effects seem just in the progressed stages. Subsequently, the early forecast of lung growth is compulsory for the analysis procedure, and it gives the higher possibilities for fruitful treatment. It is the most difficult approach to upgrade a patient’s possibility for survival. Henceforth, a higher-order neural network system called recurrent neural network with Levenberg–Marquardt model with the help of glowworm swarm optimization algorithm is proposed for managing multimodal disease information. The execution of the proposed strategies is tried with information and the benchmark dataset, and the outcomes demonstrate that the higher-order recurrent neural systems with glowworm swarm optimization give better accuracy of 98% in comparison with customary optimized neural network.

This paper attempts to develop a preliminary IoT (Internet of Things)-based real-time lake monitoring system (RTLMS) `SuJAL' to monitor the fluctuating levels of pollution in the lakes of Bangalore. The RTLMS system comprises of sensors, NodeMCU, Google Firebase Cloud and web technologies. A sensor-based prototype was developed to measure the WQI (water quality index) of five different lakes in Bangalore. The parameters used to measure the degree of pollution was pH level, turbidity level, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO) and total dissolved solids (TDS). The results were then analysed to compare the water quality of these lakes.

The cell cortex, a thin film of active material assembled below the cell membrane, plays a key role in cellular symmetry breaking processes such as cell polarity establishment and cell division. Here, we present a minimal model of the self-organization of the cell cortex that is based on a hydrodynamic theory of curved active surfaces. Active stresses on this surface are regulated by a diffusing molecular species. We show that coupling of the active surface to a passive bulk fluid enables spontaneous polarization and the formation of a contractile ring on the surface via mechano-chemical instabilities. We discuss the role of external fields in guiding such pattern formation. Our work reveals that key features of cellular symmetry breaking and cell division can emerge in a minimal model via general dynamic instabilities. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Currently available star cluster catalogues from HST imaging of nearby galaxies heavily rely on visual inspection and classification of candidate clusters. The time-consuming nature of this process has limited the production of reliable catalogues and thus also post-observation analysis. To address this problem, deep transfer learning has recently been used to create neural network models which accurately classify star cluster morphologies at production scale for nearby spiral galaxies (D 20 Mpc). Here, we use HST UV-optical imaging of over 20,000 sources in 23 galaxies from the Physics at High Angular Resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS) survey to train and evaluate two new sets of models: i) distance-dependent models, based on cluster candidates binned by galaxy distance (9–12 Mpc, 14–18 Mpc, 18–24 Mpc), and ii) distance-independent models, based on the combined sample of candidates from all galaxies. We find that the overall accuracy of both sets of models is comparable to previous automated star cluster classification studies (∼60–80 per cent) and show improvement by a factor of two in classifying asymmetric and multi-peaked clusters from PHANGS-HST. Somewhat surprisingly, while we observe a weak negative correlation between model accuracy and galactic distance, we find that training separate models for the three distance bins does not significantly improve classification accuracy. We also evaluate model accuracy as a function of cluster properties such as brightness, colour, and SED-fit age. Based on the success of these experiments, our models will provide classifications for the full set of PHANGS-HST candidate clusters (N∼200,000) for public release. © 2023, CC BY.
