An anomalous flux of neutrinos produced in hypothetical annihilations or decays of dark matter inside a source would produce a signal observable with neutrino telescopes. As suggested by observations, a conspicuous amount of dark matter is believed to accumulate in the centre of our Galaxy, which is in neat visibility for the Mediterranean underwater telescopes ANTARES and KM3NeT. Searches have been conducted with a maximum likelihood method to identify the presence of a dark matter signature in the neutrino flux measured by ANTARES. Results of all-flavour searches for WIMPs with masses from 50 GeV/c2 up to 100 TeV/c2 over the whole operation period from 2007 to 2020 are presented here. Alternative scenarios which propose a dark matter candidate in the heavy sector extensions of the Standard Model would produce a clear signature in the ANTARES telescope, that can exploit its view of the Galactic Centre up to high energies. The presentation of Galactic Centre searches is completed with ongoing analyses and future potential of the KM3NeT telescope, in phased construction in the Mediterranean Sea. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

Modeling the dynamics of domain specific terminology in diachronic corpora

In terminology work, natural language processing, and digital humanities, several studies address the analysis of variations in context and meaning of terms in order to detect semantic change and the evolution of terms. We distinguish three different approaches to describe contextual variations: methods based on the analysis of patterns and linguistic clues, methods exploring the latent semantic space of single words, and methods for the analysis of topic membership. The paper presents the notion of context volatility as a new measure for detecting semantic change and applies it to key term extraction in a political science case study. The measure quantifies the dynamics of a term's contextual variation within a diachronic corpus to identify periods of time that are characterised by intense controversial debates or substantial semantic transformations. Extreme scale HPC systems are expected to reach exascale performance around the year 2020. While it is widely known that theses systems pose new challenges regarding energy efficiency of architectures, concurrency and resiliency, they also challenge developers of applications trying to efficiently utilizing resources: Managing parallel control flows, hardware resources and dependencies is a complex and labor-intensive endeavor. We present here the concept of a runtime interface for the AllScale environment, a novel and sophisticated approach to the decoupling of specification of parallelism from underlying management activities during runtime. AllScale itself utilizes a parallel programming model based on nested recursive parallelism as foundation to add compiler and runtime based techniques to harness performance gains of modern architectures. Automated Porting to extreme scale architectures, flexible tuning and hardware management are only among the things that will be additionally added. One core component of the system will consequently be the runtime with its interface to the other components. In this paper we will present our concept of a runtime interface, based on a theoretical foundation influenced by the tuple-space paradigm. The tuple-space will be augmented by asynchronous computation together with fine grained synchronization based on futures resembling the recursive control flow adding both decomposability as well as set-like behavior to the notion of a tuple. © 2016 IEEE.

Variant tolerant read mapping using min-hashing

DNA read mapping is a ubiquitous task in bioinformatics, and many tools have been developed to solve the read mapping problem. However, there are two trends that are changing the landscape of readmapping: First, new sequencing technologies provide very long reads with high error rates (up to 15%). Second, many genetic variants in the population are known, so the reference genome is not considered as a single string over ACGT, but as a complex object containing these variants. Most existing read mappers do not handle these new circumstances appropriately. We introduce a new read mapper prototype called VATRAM that considers variants. It is based on Min-Hashing of q-gram sets of reference genome windows. Min-Hashing is one form of locality sensitive hashing. The variants are directly inserted into VATRAMs index which leads to a fast mapping process. Our results show that VATRAM achieves better precision and recall than state-of-the-art read mappers like BWA under certain cirumstances. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Recent years have witnessed a growing investigation of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) for monitoring the deformation of tunnels. TLS provides the ability to obtain a more accurate and complete description of the tunnel surfaces, allowing the determination of the mechanism and magnitude of tunnel deformation, because the entire surface of the tunnel is more concretely modelled rather than being represented by a number of points. This paper models and analyses the point clouds from TLS to detect the possible deformation of a newly built tunnel. In the application of monitoring the Badaling Tunnel for the Winter Olympics 2020 in Beijing, China, the proposed method includes the following components: the tunnel axis is automatically estimated based on a 3D quadratic form estimation;all of the point clouds are segmented into axis-based blocks;and representative points, solved by a singular value decomposition (SVD) method, are estimated to describe the tunnel surface and establish the correspondence of data between days. Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). The first observation of the electroweak (EW) production of a Z boson, a photon, and two forward jets (Zγjj) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is presented. A data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016–2018 is used. The measured fiducial cross section for EW Zγjj is σEW=5.21±0.52(stat)±0.56(syst) fb=5.21±0.76 fb. Single-differential cross sections in photon, leading lepton, and leading jet transverse momenta, and double-differential cross sections in mjj and |Δηjj| are also measured. Exclusion limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are derived at 95% confidence level in terms of the effective field theory operators M0 to M5, M7, T0 to T2, and T5 to T9.

Measurements of differential and double-differential cross sections of top-quark pair (tt¯) production are presented in the lepton+jets channels with a single electron or muon and jets in the final state. The analysis combines for the first time signatures of top quarks with low transverse momentum pT, where the top-quark decay products can be identified as separated jets and isolated leptons, and with high pT, where the decay products are collimated and overlap. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1. The cross sections are presented at the parton and particle levels, where the latter minimizes extrapolations based on theoretical assumptions. Most of the measured differential cross sections are well described by standard model predictions with the exception of some double-differential distributions. The inclusive tt¯ production cross section is measured to be σtt¯=791±25 pb, which constitutes the most precise measurement in the lepton+jets channel to date.

The cubic-kilometre neutrino telescope, consisting of large-scale 3D-arrays of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) currently under construction on the Mediterranean seabed, relies on accurate calibration procedures in order to answer its science goals. These proceedings present an overview of a novel gain calibration method based on highly compressed PMT hit information. In particular, it is shown that the PMT gains can be tuned to within 2% of the nominal value, based on the measured time-over-threshold. © Copyright owned by the author(s).

Offloading mobile Internet data via WiFi has emerged as an omnipresent trend. WiFi networks are already widely deployed by many private and public institutions (e.g., libraries, cafes, restaurants) but also by commercial services to provide alternative Internet access for their customers and to mitigate the load on mobile networks. Moreover, smart cities start to install WiFi infrastructure for current and future civic services, e.g., based on sensor networks or the Internet of Things. A simple model for the distribution of WiFi hotspots in an urban environment is presented. The hotspot locations are modeled with a uniform distribution of the angle and an exponential distribution of the distance, which is truncated to the city limits. We compare the characteristics of this model in detail to the real distributions. Moreover, we show the applicability and the limitations of this model, and the results suggest that the model can be used in scenarios, which do not require an accurate spatial collocation of the hotspots, such as offloading potential, coverage, or signal strength.
