This paper describes the use of ant colony models for photographic rendering, that is, for the depiction or interpretation of photographic images. A description of a previously proposed ant-based edge detection method called pherographia is given in order to contextualize this paper's proposal. Then, the application of the KANTS algorithm to photo-rendering is introduced. KANTS is ant-based clustering algorithm described by a set of equations that model the local behavior of simple units (ants). These units represent data samples. When moving on a heterogeneous 2-dimensional lattice of vectors, global behavior emerges from the local interaction between the ants, which self-organize into clusters. In this paper, a data set consists of the RGB values of a digital (or digitalized) photograph. Two different approaches for the initialization of the environment are tested, each one resulting in radically different output images: when the environment is initialized with the RGB values of the same image that is used to generate the data set, the final result is very similar to the original photo; a random initialization of the environment leads to an abstract interpretation of the photo. The results are contextualized within previous swarm artworks by the authors.

ArchC is an architecture description language that provides instruction set level simulation and binary tool chain generation. It is based on SystemC and can communicate with other SystemC components using transaction level modeling (TLM). In this article we present an upgrade of ArchC that allows TLM-2.0 usage and makes it available in timed simulations. These extensions enable performance evaluation of complete System-on-Chip designs built around an ArchC processor model. As a proof-of-concept, we examine various TLM-connected memory hierarchies. We outline how model designers can use a combination of fast functional simulation and slow timed simulation to determine an optimal system architecture for a given workload.

This paper discusses the unification of service composition based on formal specifications. The approach aims for a unified execution of service compositions that can be modeled by various specification languages covering different modeling paradigms. The unification of service composition models is realized based on formal grammars whereas the unification of service composition execution is realized based on formal queued automata. The approach introduces a classification of context-sensitive grammars for determining an optimized automaton class for the execution of service compositions. Finally, a prototype providing transformations of various modeling languages to formal grammars as well as the grammar-based execution of service compositions is presented.

Inspired by network-based global inference approach, Semi-global inference method is proposed to capture the complex associations between phenotypes and genes. The proposed method integrates phenotype similarities and protein-protein interactions, and it establishes the profile vectors of phenotypes and proteins. Then the relevance between each candidate gene and the target phenotype is evaluated. Candidate genes are then ranked according to relevance mark and genes that are potentially associated with target disease are identified based on this ranking. The model selects nodes in integrated phenotype-protein network for inference, by exploiting Phenotype Similarity Threshold (PST), which throws lights on selection of similar phenotypes for gene prediction problem. Different vector relevance metrics for computing the relevance marks of candidate genes are discussed. The performance of the model is evaluated on Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) data sets and experimental evaluation shows high performance of proposed Semi-global method outperforms existing global inference methods.

The volume of the published scientific literature available on Internet has been increasing exponentially. Many projects have been funded aiming to online scientific literature mining, especially in biomedical research. The scientific literature covers most of the hot topics in the research field and has a very large domain-specific vocabulary. The exploitation of domain knowledge and specialized vocabulary can dramatically improve the result of the literature text processing. In this paper, a large-scale annotated corpus was built from abstract content in the IT security literature, from which the domain vocabularies were constructed with TF/IDF-like schema. To evaluate the discriminating capability between single word vocabulary and co-occurrence phrase vocabularies built respectively from positive and negative corpus, this paper introduced the concept of discrimination index computed by Cosine similarity and Jicard distance, presented a yearly distribution analysis of the retrieved paper and listed some new emerging bilexical co-occurrence phrases. The experimental result shows the effectiveness of domain vocabulary in discriminating domain-specific documents. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Effective design of shared mediated spaces, information and connectedness requires theory and practice from a range of disciplines such as found in European projects like Together Anywhere, Together Anytime (TA2) and the EIT ICT Labs Mediating Presence activity. Building on this work we continue to investigate the changes in the European digital media industry such as changed traditional distribution of media content and the progressive integration of (social) communication means in information distribution and shared mediated spaces. Our past research has given valuable insights in how to design and evaluate systems and services that provide a high quality of experience, in how trust is established in mediated environments, and how the formation of tacit communication between participants in new distributed and connected media is negotiated. In the new Seventh Framework Program project COnnected Media and Presence from European institute of Technology (COMPEIT) we aim to enhance the quality of experience in face-to-face and broadcast communication further in three domains: 1) Spatial connectedness, 2) Social connectedness and 3) Information connectedness, by developing three key services: Shared Experience with Tangible Interaction (SETI);Broadcast Presence Studio (BPS) and Mixed-Reality Interaction (MRI). The quality of experience of these services will be enhanced in terms of for example: spatial connectedness, by providing shared spaces and supporting spatial features such as eye contact;social connectedness, by using natural means for interaction suiting different settings and activities;and information connectedness, by providing better means to share, manipulate and use information suiting different task or activities. In this paper we will discuss the background of this work and give an overview of our planned future work in COMPEIT. © 2013 ACM.
