The widening gap between the fast-increasing transistor budget but slow-growing power delivery and system cooling capability calls for novel architectural solutions to boost energy efficiency. Leveraging the fact of surging “dark silicon” area, we propose a hybrid scheme to use both on-chip and off-chip voltage regulators, called “AgileRegulator”, for a multicore system to explore both coarse-grain and fine-grain power phases. We present two complementary algorithms: Sensitivity-Aware Application Scheduling (SAAS) and Responsiveness-Aware Application Scheduling (RAAS) to maximally achieve the energy saving potential of the hybrid regulator scheme. Experimental results show that the hybrid scheme achieves performance-energy efficiency close to per-core DVFS, without imposing much design cost. Meanwhile, the silicon overhead of this scheme is well contained into the “dark silicon”. Unlike other application specific schemes based on accelerators, the proposed scheme itself is a simple and universal solution for chip area and energy trade-offs.

Models in testing are important for describing, understanding, and managing tests. In the automotive domain, AUTOSAR is an important standard to model components of electronic control units. AUTOSAR, however, lacks information about tests or test scenarios. Early testing in the automotive domain is often done by Model-in-the-Loop simulation. Simulations of several components are run in different environments, each. Thus, they need to be connected (co-simulated) for integration testing of these components, e.g., via simulator coupling. This paper is focused on closing the gap between AUTOSAR models and co-simulation-based test scenarios that use simulator coupling. Our main contribution is the definition of a modeling language to describe test environments. The instances of this language can be derived from existing AUTOSAR models and can also be used to automatically generate co-simulation-based test environments. Furthermore, we provide a workflow to integrate this model in the engineering process and an experiment report to demonstrate the applicability and the advantages of the approach.
The rise of ubiquitous computing leads to a natural convergence between the areas of architectural design (the design of buildings, spaces and experience of being in and moving through them) and HCI. We suggest that A...

Over the last decade, Quality of Experience (QoE) has become the guiding paradigm for enabling a more user-centric understanding of quality of communication networks and services. The intensifying competition among ISPs and the exponentially increasing traffic volumes caused by online video platforms like YouTube is forcing service providers to integrate QoE into their corporate DNA. This paper investigates the problem of YouTube QoE monitoring from an access provider's perspective. To this end, we present three novel methods for in-network measurement of the QoE impairment that dominates user perception in the context of HTTP video-streaming: stalling of playback. Our evaluation results show that it is possible to detect application-level stalling events at high accuracy by using network-level passive probing only. However, only the most complex and most accurate approach can be used for QoE prediction due to the non-linear ties inherent in human quality perception.
In service-oriented systems, service-level agreements (SLA) are specified as contracts between service providers and service consumers. SLAs stipulate - among other things - the provided services' performance. A s...

This paper exploits sink mobility to prolong the network lifetime in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) where the information delay caused by moving the sink should be bounded. We build a unified framework for analyzing this joint sink mobility and routing problem. We offer a mathematical modeling that is general and captures diversified issues, e.g. sink mobility, routing, delay, etc. We discuss the induced subproblems and present efficient solutions for them. Then, we generalize these solutions and propose a polynomial-time optimal algorithm for the origin problem. In simulations, we show the benefits of involving a mobile sink. We also show that the impact of the delay bound on the network lifetime.

Embedded control systems used in safety critical systems need to be robust to quality-faults such as shift, noise, and spikes. Methods for finding counterexamples (quality-faults whose injection leads to violation of fault-tolerance requirements) at an early stage of control system design were proposed in the literature. Given these counterexamples, control design should be improved such that it is quality-fault tolerant. In this paper, we propose an effective methodology for finding critical components in embedded control systems which are sensitive to quality-faults based on the given counterexamples, which is an important step towards improving the control design. Experimental results on the fault-tolerant fuel controller of Simulink library show the efficacy of proposed methodology.

This study investigates the structure of the editorial processes at a Swedish monthly magazine for interior decorating and design, Sköna hem, and assesses the carbon footprint (greenhouse gas emissions) of the editorial content production during one year. The objective is to define the processes using a computer based process modeling tool and to analyze the workflow in order to discover how the different steps in the production process relate to different environmentally related parameters. An additional objective is to present the carbon footprint of the overall editorial work and to identify the major reasons for greenhouse gas emissions, as well as any major data gaps and uncertainties. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken in order to identify the process steps involved in the content production. Environmentally related parameters, such as travel distance, mode of transports, and computer hours, were then collected for each process step. Life cycle assessment methodology was used to assess the potential greenhouse gas emissions of the editorial work at Sköna hem. A number of process steps were identified in the content production. Three overall phases were identified, into which the process steps can be grouped. Firstly, the planning phase consists of meetings with different key persons in order to plan the content of the next issues of the magazine. Secondly, the executive phase was identified. Here, all the articles and pictures are produced. Thirdly, the assembly phase includes text editing and page design. Finally, ready-made pages are sent to printing or to the digital publishing channels such as tablets and the web. According to the assessment made, the editorial content production at Sköna hem has a carbon footprint of 23 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year. The major reasons are the manufacturing of computers and screens used at the office, business trips by plane, and transports by delivery firms mainly used for transporting furniture and
