This paper introduces a novel interactive floor platform for social games and entertainment involving multiple co-located users in a collaborative game environment. The interactive floor used as the prototype platform, is a 12 m2 glass surface with bottom projection and camera based tracking of limb (e.g. foot, hand, and knee) contact points. The iGameFloor platform supports tracking of limb points for more than 10 users at the same time. This paper describes the technological platform and the interaction techniques used for social gaming and entertainment. Three iGameFloor applications are discussed with the purpose of displaying the potential of the physical computer game platform. Experiences and perspectives for further development of the iGameFloor platform are discussed. Copyright 2007 ACM.

This paper introduces a novel kinesthetic interaction technique for interactive floors. The interaction techniques utilize vision-based limb tracking on an interactive floor - a 12 m2 glass surface with bottom projection. The kinesthetic interaction technique has been developed for an interactive floor implemented in a school square. The paper discusses the kinesthetic interaction technique and its potentials in the domain of learning applications: Kinesthetic interaction supports body-kinesthetic learning as argued in the learning literature. Kinesthetic interaction is fun and motivating thus encourages children to explore and learn. Kinesthetic interaction on large display surfaces supports collaborative, co-located play and learning through communication and negotiation among the participants. Finally, the paper discusses prospects and challenges in development of kinesthetic interaction for interactive floors. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2007.

Performance uncertainty is a barrier to implementation of innovative technologies. This research investigates the potential offlexible design - one that enables future change - to improve the economic performance of a naturally ventilated building. The flexible design of the naturally ventilated building enables future installation of a mechanical cooling system by including features such as space for pipes and chillers. The benefits of the flexible design are energy savings, delay of capital costs and capability of mitigating the risk of a failed building (by installing the mechanical cooling system). To evaluate the flexible design, building energy simulation is conducted over a multi-year time period with stochastic outdoor temperature variables. One result is a probability distribution of the time when the maximum allowable indoor temperature under natural ventilation is exceeded, which may be "never." Probability distributions are also obtained for energy savings and cost savings as compared to a mechanically cooled building. Together, these results allow decision-makers to evaluate the long-term performance risks and opportunities afforded by a flexible implementation strategy for natural ventilation. It is shown that the likelihood of future installation of mechanical cooling is most sensitive to design parameters. The impact of increased climate variability depends on the local climate. The probability of installing the mechanical system also depends on the comfort criteria. The results show thatcapital costs for cooling equipment are much greater than the present value of 10 years of cooling energy costs. This result motivates consideration of flexible design as opposed to hybrid cooling designs (which have immediate installation of mechanical cooling). Future work will study the impact of uncertain energy prices on investment attractiveness of naturally ventilated buildings. Low-power design is one of the most important issues in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), while reliable information transmitting should be ensured as well. Transmitting power (TP) control is a simple method to make the power consumption down, but excessive interferences from potential adjacent operating links and communication reliability between nodes should be considered. In this paper, a reliable and energy efficient protocol is presented, which adopts adaptive rate control based on an optimal TP. A mathematical model considering average interference and network connectivity was used to predict the optimal TP. Then for the optimal TP, active nodes adaptively chose the data rate with the change of bit-error-rate(BER) performance. The efficiency of the new strategy was validated by mathematical analysis and simulations. Compared with 802.11 DCF which uses maximum unified TP and BASIC protocol, it is shown that the higher average throughput can achieve while the energy consumption per useful bit can be reduced according to the results.

A study on the comprehensive evaluation of the social, environmental and economic benefits of the land fund expenditure in Shenzhen was made based on fuzzy mathematics. To be more objective and more effective, the benefit evaluation procedure was improved in the following aspects. Firstly, the index system of comprehensive evaluation was established according to the main usage of the land fund in Shenzhen over the years. Secondly, with the assumption that the direct benefits and indirect benefits are different in proportion, the paper confirmed the weights of the main indexes according to the actual expenditure situation of the land fund. Finally, this paper regarded the relevant standard of developed country and urban construction in our country as the standard to confirm the grades of the indexes. The calculation result showed that there are 13 indexes regarded as excellent among the 24 indexes selected; the proportion changes of direct and indirect benefits have little influence on the total evaluation result; weights and evaluation grades of the social benefit were the highest in the 3 types of benefits, the economic benefit was the lowest; the weights and evaluation grades of municipal engineering were the highest, and accessory facility was the lowest.

We propose a mitigation technique of high-level multiple access interference(MAI) for multimedia optical Code- Division Multiple-Access(CDMA) systems using the optical power selector. The proposed system can eliminate high-intensity MAI at the receiver for the low-priority users. Moreover, the proposed scheme can reduce by half the required number of code sequences compared to the conventional scheme. As a result, the proposed scheme can obtain higher code spreading gain due to the increase of number of weights at the same code-length. We analyze performances of the proposed scheme and show that both the high-priority users and low-priority users achieve lower bit error rates in comparison to the conventional scheme.

Recent changes in data management within post-genomic clinical trials have emphasized the need for novel methods and tools to solve semantic and syntactic heterogeneities among distributed sources of information. ACGT is an Integrated Project funded by the European Commission that aims at building a GRID-based platform comprised by a set of tools to support multicentric post-genomic clinical trials on cancer. The main goal of ACGT is to provide seamless access to heterogeneous sources of information. For this purpose, two core tools were developed and included in the ACGT architecture: the ACGT Semantic Mediator (ACGT-SM), and the Data Access Wrappers (ACGT-DAWs). The ACGT-SM addresses semantics and schema integration, while the ACGT-DAWs cope with syntactic heterogeneities. Once the sources are bridged together, they can be seamlessly accessed using the RDQL query *** tested our tools using a set of three relational and DICOM based image sources obtaining promising results.

Dr. Jeng is the author/co-author of over 120 book chapters journal papers and conference papers. Dr. Jeng received the Franklin V. Statechart has been utilized as a visual formalism for the modeling of complex and interactive systems for its illuminating features on describing properties of causality, concurrency, and synchronization. This paper presents the application of satechart to the modeling, design and implementation of an elevator system, whose system behavior involves aggregating complexity of state descriptions, and imposition of underlying control policy. Based on the operational flow of an elevator, we derive the associated statechart model by looking into the inherent hierarchical structure of the elevator. The advantage of the proposed approach is the clear presentation of system behavior in terms of conditions and events that cause the transitions in system dynamics. Implementation of the controlled elevator based on the modeled statechart is also presented.

Fast time-domain edge-diffraction calculations for interactive acoustic simulations

The inclusion of edge diffraction has long been recognized as an improvement to geometrical-acoustics (GA)modeling techniques, particularly for acoustic simulations of complex environments that are represented as collections of finite-sized planar surfaces. One particular benefit of combining edge diffraction with GA components is that the resulting total sound field is continuous when an acoustic source or receiver crosses a specular-zone or shadow-zone boundary, despite the discontinuity experienced by the associated GA *** interactive acoustic simulations which include only GA components, such discontinuities may be heard as clicks or other undesirable audible artifacts, and thus diffraction calculations are important for high perceptual quality as well as physical realism. While exact diffraction calculations are difficult to compute at interactive rates, approximate calculations are possible and sufficient for situations in which the ultimate goal is a perceptually plausible simulation rather than a numerically exact one. In this paper, we describe an edge-subdivision strategy that allows for fast time-domain edge-diffraction calculations with relatively low error when compared with results from a more numerically accurate solution. The tradeoff between computation time and accuracy can be controlled with a number of parameters, allowing the user to choose the speed that is necessary and the error that is tolerable for a specific modeling scenario.
