An interpretable spatially weighted machine learning approach for revealing spatial nonstationarity impacts of the built environment on air pollution

With urbanization acceleration, air pollution has become increasingly severe, and the built environment plays a crucial role in pollutant dispersion and accumulation. In this study, the central urban area of Nanjing is analysed in a case study, focusing on the plot scale to systematically explore spatial heterogeneity and nonlinear interactive mechanisms of built environment impacts. To accurately capture the complex spatial nonstationarity effects of the built environment on air pollution, a geographically weighted machine learning (GeoML) approach driven by an adjacency-based spatial mechanism integrated with the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) framework for interpretability is established. The findings reveal that the GeoML model outperforms other models (the ordinary least squares (OLS), random forest (RF), geographically weighted regression (GWR), and geographically weighted random forest (GWRF) models), with an R² value of 0.74, effectively capturing spatial heterogeneity and nonlinearity. Further analysis reveals significant variations in the impact of spatial weighting on the contributions of different feature variables: the explanatory power of most variables increases with the inclusion of spatial effects, whereas the contributions of variables such as population density, road network density, and parcel compactness are reduced. The SHAP framework is employed to provide interpretable analysis of the patterns in the impacts of various feature variables on air pollution. This study emphasizes the importance of spatial effects at the microscale plot level in understanding the mechanisms of air pollution and highlights their importance for developing urban environmental policies, thus promoting the transformation of air pollution control towards spatially refined management. © 2025

The task of scene graph generation entails identifying object entities and their corresponding interaction predicates in a given image (or video). Due to the combinatorially large solution space, existing approaches to scene graph generation assume certain factorization of the joint distribution to make the estimation feasible (e.g., assuming that objects are conditionally independent of predicate predictions). However, this fixed factorization is not ideal under all scenarios (e.g., for images where an object entailed in interaction is small and not discernible on its own). In this work, we propose a novel framework for scene graph generation that addresses this limitation, as well as introduces dynamic conditioning on the image, using message passing in a Markov Random Field. This is implemented as an iterative refinement procedure wherein each modification is conditioned on the graph generated in the previous iteration. This conditioning across refinement steps allows joint reasoning over entities and relations. This framework is realized via a novel and end-to-end trainable transformer-based architecture. In addition, the proposed framework can improve existing approach performance. Through extensive experiments on Visual Genome [29] and Action Genome [24] benchmark datasets we show improved performance on the scene graph generation task. © 2022, CC BY.

Intelligent navigation among social crowds is an essential aspect of mobile robotics for applications such as delivery, health care, or assistance. Deep Reinforcement Learning emerged as an alternative planning method to conservative approaches and promises more efficient and flexible navigation. However, in highly dynamic environments employing different kinds of obstacle classes, safe navigation still presents a grand challenge. In this paper, we propose a semantic Deep-reinforcement-learning-based navigation approach that teaches object-specific safety rules by considering high-level obstacle information. In particular, the agent learns object-specific behavior by contemplating the specific danger zones to enhance safety around vulnerable object classes. We tested the approach against a benchmark obstacle avoidance approach and found an increase in safety. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the agent could learn to navigate more safely by keeping an individual safety distance dependent on the semantic information.

Autonomous navigation of mobile robots is an es-sential aspect in use cases such as delivery, assistance or logistics. Although traditional planning methods are well integrated into existing navigation systems, they struggle in highly dynamic en-vironments. On the other hand, Deep-Reinforcement-Learning-based methods show superior performance in dynamic obstacle avoidance but are not suitable for long-range navigation and struggle with local minima. In this paper, we propose a Deep-Reinforcement-Learning-based control switch, which has the ability to select between different planning paradigms based solely on sensor data observations. Therefore, we develop an interface to efficiently operate multiple model-based, as well as learning-based local planners and integrate a variety of state-of-the-art planners to be selected by the control switch. Subsequently, we evaluate our approach against each planner individually and found improvements in navigation performance especially for highly dynamic scenarios. Our planner was able to prefer learning-based approaches in situations with a high number of obstacles while relying on the traditional model-based planners in long corridors or empty spaces.

The study presents the existing challenges in opal mining in the Delanta area (mining methods, tools, market system, and environmental impact) and provides possible recommendations to overcome these challenges. Literature review, data collection, field survey, and data analysis were used as methods for this study. Environmental impact assessment also applied in the study area. Based on the study, the opal mining system in the Delanta area is performed in traditional ways and this method is not benefiting the local miners as well as the country. In the area, due to roof collapse of mining sites, three to eight artesian small-scale miners are dying each year. Opal quality deterioration (wastes locally called Ajara) because of cracking is the other main challenge in the study area. Moreover, environmental problems such as deforestation, concealed underground channels, landslides, the loss of numerous species’ habitats, annihilation of flora, land degradation, soil erosion and pollution, water pollution, air pollution, downstream sedimentation, and the covering of topsoil on agricultural land, which affects the farming system are the main findings of this study. In the study area, only 3% of the opal is processed, while 97% is rough, and this results in loss of income for the country. Finally, the study indicated the possible solutions in opal exploration and mining methods, as well as market system for the safe and sustainable extraction of Delanta opal resources. The study recommended for future work to design a safe mining method, a ventilation shaft, develop a smartphone app for quality grading and branding for selling, developing a low-cost opal cutting and polishing machine for value addition, and establishing training centers. In addition, the sector in the area also needs solar systems planting for lighting of mining sites, design and development of waste soil removal technology/conveyors and hammers for safe mining, sustainable development and management.

On February 7, 2021, a rockfall in the Rishiganga Valley killed about 200 people. For the integration of seismic, social media, and remote sensing, a case study on this tragedy has been conducted. This study explores the role of social media in managing Himalayan landslides in conjunction with remote sensing data analytics. We look at how these technologies can enhance damage management, quick mobilization, and early warning systems. A literature review and case studies of the successful use of these technologies in other disaster-prone areas will support these suggestions. The intention is to equip decision-makers and experts in disaster management with the practical knowledge they need to effectively prepare for and respond to Himalayan landslide events, saving lives and minimizing the impact of natural hazards. © 2023 IEEE.

Singing voice conversion (SVC) aims to convert a singer’s voice to another singer’s from a reference audio while keeping the original semantics. However, existing SVC methods can hardly perform zero-shot due to incomplete feature disentanglement or dependence on the speaker look-up table. We propose the first open-source high-quality zero-shot SVC model SaMoye that can convert singing to human and non-human timbre. SaMoye disentangles the singing voice’s features into content, timbre, and pitch features, where we combine multiple ASR models and compress the content features to reduce timbre leakages. Besides, we enhance the timbre features by unfreezing the speaker encoder and mixing the speaker embedding with top-3 similar speakers. We also establish an unparalleled large-scale dataset to guarantee zero-shot performance, which comprises more than 1,815 hours of pure singing voice and 6,367 speakers. We conduct objective and subjective experiments to find that SaMoye outperforms other models in zero-shot SVC tasks even under extreme conditions like converting singing to animals’ timbre.
