Towards Building Knowledge by Merging Multiple Ontologies with CoMerger: A Partitioning-based Approach

Ontologies are the prime way of organizing data in the Semantic Web. Often, it is necessary to combine several, independently developed ontologies to obtain a knowledge graph fully representing a domain of interest. The complementarity of existing ontologies can be leveraged by merging them. Existing approaches for ontology merging mostly implement a binary merge. However, with the growing number and size of relevant ontologies across domains, scalability becomes a central challenge. A multi-ontology merging technique offers a potential solution to this problem. We present CoMerger, a scalable multiple ontologies merging method. For efficient processing, rather than successively merging complete ontologies pairwise, we group related concepts across ontologies into partitions and merge first within and then across those partitions. The experimental results on well-known datasets confirm the feasibility of our approach and demonstrate its superiority over binary strategies. We propose the DOG paradigm (Data-driven, Open, Global) for land-use regression which advocates openly and globally available data, and automatically extracting features in order to estimate pollution. Following this newly introduced paradigm, we propose the MapLUR model. It consists of a deep neural network architecture that estimates pollution concentrations for specific locations directly from globally available map images (rendered maps or satellite images) resulting in area spanning pollution maps. For this, MapLUR automatically learns to extract features from the given map images. The extracted features closely resemble manually engineered features for land-use regression models. Land-use regression (LUR) models are important for the assessment of air pollution concentrations in areas without measurement stations. While many such models exist, they often use manually constructed features based on restricted, locally available data. Thus, they are typically hard to reproduce and challenging to adapt to areas beyond those they have been developed for. In this paper, we advocate a paradigm shift for LUR models: We propose the Data-driven, Open, Global (DOG) paradigm that entails models based on purely data-driven approaches using only openly and globally available data. Progress within this paradigm will alleviate the need for experts to adapt models to the local characteristics of the available data sources and thus facilitate the generalizability of air pollution models to new areas on a global scale. In order to illustrate the feasibility of the DOG paradigm for LUR, we introduce a deep learning model called MapLUR. It is based on a convolutional neural network architecture and is trained exclusively on globally and openly available map data without requiring manual feature engineering. We compare our model to state-of-the-art baselines like linear regression, random forests and multi-layer perceptrons using a large data set of modeled NO2 concentrations

Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) is a cloud service model enabling developers to offload event-driven executable snippets code. The execution and management of such functions becomes a FaaS provider’s responsibility, hereby included the on-demand provisioning and automatic scaling. Key enablers for this cloud service model are FaaS platforms, e.g., AW Lambda, Microsoft Azure Functions or OpenFaaS. At the same time, the choice of the most appropriate FaaS platfor for deploying and running a serverless application is not trivial, as various organizational and technical aspects ha to be taken into account. In this work, we present (i) a FaaS platform classification framework derived using a mixe method study and (ii) a systematic technology review of the ten most prominent FaaS platforms, based on the propose classification framework. Moreover, we present (iii) a FaaS platform selection support system, called FaaStener, whic helps researchers and practitioners to choose the FaaS platform most suited for their requirements. The Jaro-Winkler similarity is a widely used measure for the similarity of strings. We propose an efficient algorithm for the bounded search of similar strings in a large set of strings. We compared our approach to the naive approach and the approach by Dreßler et al. Our results prove a significant improvement of the efficiency in computation of the bounded Jaro-Winkler similarity for querying of similar strings. © 2019 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). Superspreaders (i.e., hosts with numerous distinct connections) remain severe threats to production networks. How to accurately detect superspreaders in real-time at scale remains a non-trivial yet challenging issue. We present SpreadSketch, an invertible sketch data structure for network-wide superspreader detection with the theoretical guarantees on memory space, performance, and accuracy. SpreadSketch tracks candidate super-spreaders and embeds estimated fan-outs in binary hash strings inside small and static memory space, such that multiple SpreadSketch instances can be merged to provide a network-wide measurement view for recovering superspreaders and their estimated fan-outs. We present formal theoretical analysis on SpreadSketch in terms of space and time complexities as well as error bounds. Trace-driven evaluation shows that SpreadSketch achieves higher accuracy and performance over state-of-the-art sketches. Furthermore, we prototype SpreadSketch in P4 and show its feasible deployment in commodity hardware switches.

Differential buoyancy sources at an ocean surface may induce a density-driven flow that joins faster flow components to create a multi-scale, 3D flow. Potential temperature and salinity are active tracers that determine the ocean’s potential density: their distribution strongly affects the density-driven component while the overall flow affects their distribution. We present a robust framework that allows one to study the effects of a general prescribed 3D flow on a density-driven velocity component through temperature and salinity transport, by constructing a modular 3D model of intermediate complexity. The model contains an incompressible velocity that couples two advection-diffusion equations for the two tracers. Instead of solving the Navier-Stokes equations for the velocity, we consider a prescribed flow composed of several spatially predetermined modes. One of these modes models the density-driven flow: its spatial form describes a density-driven flow structure and its strength is determined dynamically by averaged density differences. The other modes are completely predetermined, consisting of any incompressible, possibly unsteady, 3D flow, e.g. as determined by kinematic models, observations, or simulations. The result is a hybrid kinematic-dynamic model, formulated as a non-linear, weakly coupled system of two nonlocal PDEs. We prove its well-posedness in the sense of Hadamard, and obtain a priori rigorous bounds regarding analytical solutions. When the relevant Rayleigh number is small enough, we show, both rigorously and numerically, that for all initial conditions, the corresponding solutions converge to a unique steady state. Motivated by the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, the model’s relevance to oceanic systems is demonstrated by tuning the parameters to mimic the North Atlantic ocean. Coding rules become more critical for security-oriented softwares, which prefer compilers as their base platforms due to simultaneous demands not only in a mature grammatical analysis, but also in compilation and optimization techniques. However, engineering such a compiler-based analyzer, exploring proper launch points before integrating hundreds of rules one by one in the frontend of compilers, is a completely manual decision-making process with heavy redundant efforts exhausted. To improve this, we introduce a novel pattern-guided approach, named Referee, to facilitate this process. Referee improves the manual approach significantly by making three advances: (1) our pattern-guided approach can significantly reduce the amount of redundant manual efforts required, (2) a twin-graph aided broadcasting process is developed to enable rule patterns to be characterized with partially developed rules, and (3) a reliable recommendation mechanism is used to pinpoint the launch point for a new rule based on the accumulated experience from handling earlier rules. We have implemented Referee in GCC 8.2 with 163 rules from SPACE-C and MISRA-C standards. Referee achieves an accuracy of 89.9% on recommendation of launch points for new rules to our GCC-based analyzer automatically when trained with 70% of all the rules. Decreasing the training data size to 60% and 50% still yields an accuracy of 87.7% and 81.5%, respectively. Therefore, Referee can significantly reduce the amount of manual efforts that would otherwise be required, with a careful selection of seeding rule patterns, providing an interesting and fruitful avenue for further research.

Additive robotic construction of building-scale discrete bar structures, such as trusses and space frames, is increasingly attractive due to the potential improvements in efficiency, safety, and design possibilities. However, programming complex robots, such as manipulators with seven degrees of freedom, to successfully complete construction tasks can be tedious, challenging, or impossible for a human to do manually. Namely, the structure must be constructed in a sequence that preserves structural properties, such as stiffness, at each step. At the same time, this sequence must allow for the robot to precisely manipulate elements within the in-progress structure while respecting geometric constraints that, for example, ensure the robot does not collide with what it has built. In this work, we present an automated and newly generalized planning approach for jointly finding a construction sequence and robot motion plan for additive construction that satisfies these requirements. Our approach can be applied in a variety of additive construction processes, and we demonstrate it specifically on spatial extrusion and discrete bar assembly in this paper. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on several simulated and real-world extrusion and assembly tasks, including a human-scale physical prototype, for which our algorithm is deployed for the first time to plan the assembly of a complicated double tangent bar system design. © 2021, CC BY.

The evolution of wireless communications has been significantly influenced by remarkable advancements in multiple access (MA) technologies over the past five decades, shaping the landscape of modern connectivity. Within this context, a comprehensive tutorial review is presented, focusing on representative MA techniques developed over the past 50 years. The following areas are explored: i) The foundational principles and information-theoretic capacity limits of power-domain nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are characterized, along with its extension to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)NOMA. ii) Several MA transmission schemes exploiting the spatial domain are investigated, encompassing both conventional space-division multiple access (SDMA)/MIMO-NOMA systems and near-field MA systems utilizing spherical-wave propagation models. iii) The application of NOMA to integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems is studied. This includes an introduction to typical NOMA-based downlink/uplink ISAC frameworks, followed by an evaluation of their performance limits using a mutual information (MI)-based analytical framework. iv) Major issues and research opportunities associated with the integration of MA with other emerging technologies are identified to facilitate MA in next-generation networks, i.e., next-generation multiple access (NGMA).
