Practical Stabilization of Passive Nonlinear Systems with Limited Control

This article addresses output feedback stabilization of continuous-time nonlinear systems by choosing control actions from a finite set. Working under the assumption that the system under consideration is passive and large-time norm observable, we propose a static feedback mapping, from the output space to the finite set of control actions, which is shown to be practically stabilizing if the convex hull of certain control actions (in the chosen finite set) contains the origin in its interior. Consequently, to construct this stabilizing feedback, it suffices to have, in addition to a zero symbol, another m + 1 elements in the control set which form an m -simplex in ℝ m (the input, and output space).

The built environment plays a crucial role in urban health through its constant interaction with residents. Yet, a comprehensive analysis across multiple U.S. cities covering different geographical conditions has been missing. This study examines the impact of the built environment on mental, physical, and overall health in 19 major U.S. cities across diverse climate zones, aiming to discover the influential factors and create a predictive health model for the entire nation. Utilizing a convolutional neural network, this research extracted building characteristics from google street view and employed a multiple regression model, XGBoost, support vector regression (SVR), decision tree, and random forest, achieving R-squared values of 0.75, 0.76, and 0.82 for mental, physical, and general health, respectively. The findings revealed certain building features profoundly influence urban health, including lead paint as a persistent health hazard, while air conditioning boosts health outcomes. Traditional materials like wood and masonry, common in older buildings, are linked to better health compared to modern materials. The study also reveals significant geographic variations, underscoring the intricate relationship between architecture and public health. By highlighting the vital role of building features in shaping urban health, this research provides a foundation for policymakers to inform building regulations, prioritize vulnerable areas, and support health-oriented urban design, ultimately contributing to healthier, more livable urban environments. © The Author(s) 2025.

DWM: A Decomposable Winograd Method for convolution acceleration

Winograd’s minimal filtering algorithm has been widely used in Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to reduce the number of multiplications for faster processing. However, it is only effective on convolutions with kernel size as 3x3 and stride as 1, because it suffers from significantly increased FLOPs and numerical accuracy problem for kernel size larger than 3x3 and fails on convolution with stride larger than 1. In this paper, we propose a novel Decomposable Winograd Method (DWM), which breaks through the limitation of original Winograd’s minimal filtering algorithm to a wide and general convolutions. DWM decomposes kernels with large size or large stride to several small kernels with stride as 1 for further applying Winograd method, so that DWM can reduce the number of multiplications while keeping the numerical accuracy. It enables the fast exploring of larger kernel size and larger stride value in CNNs for high performance and accuracy and even the potential for new CNNs. Comparing against the original Winograd, the proposed DWM is able to support all kinds of convolutions with a speedup of ∼2, without affecting the numerical accuracy. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. The comprehensive management function models (CMFM) represent a solution for the growing heterogeneity in the management plane of the industrial domain. We present the internal structure of the CMFM with a meta-model. The use of semantic techniques and knowledge formalization is a first step towards management automation from a human-centric point of view. This human-centric character also helps to keep the overview and comprehensive understanding in the vast field of the network management. The evaluation of the CMFM against well-known and widely used network management systems explains the extent of the novelty of this approach. The CMFM ease the management of heterogeneous industrial networks and are a first step towards the application of further automation measures like artificial intelligence.

The eXtended isogeometric analysis (X-IGA) combined with Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used for crack identification in twodimensional linear elastic problems based on inverse problem. The application of fracture mechanics test under mode II loading is performed. The X-IGA possesses the advantages of the combination between eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM) and the Isogeometric Analysis (IGA). The objective function minimizes the gap between the calculated and measured displacements. Convergence studies at various positions of crack on the plate are calculated and the results shows that the proposed technique can detect damage with minimum accuracy 95% for the position and maximum accuracy 98%. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

Dataset search in biodiversity research: Do metadata in data repositories reflect scholarly information needs?

The increasing amount of publicly available research data provides the opportunity to link and integrate data in order to create and prove novel hypotheses, to repeat experiments or to compare recent data to data collected at a different time or place. However, recent studies have shown that retrieving relevant data for data reuse is a time-consuming task in daily research practice. In this study, we explore what hampers dataset retrieval in biodiversity research, a field that produces a large amount of heterogeneous data. We analyze the primary source in dataset search - metadata - and determine if they reflect scholarly search interests. We examine if metadata standards provide elements corresponding to search interests, we inspect if selected data repositories use metadata standards representing scholarly interests, and we determine how many fields of the metadata standards used are filled. To determine search interests in biodiversity research, we gathered 169 questions that researchers aimed to answer with the help of retrieved data, identified biological entities and grouped them into 13 categories. The categories were evaluated with nine biodiversity scholars who assigned one of the types to pre-labeled biological entities in the questions. Our findings indicate that environments, materials and chemicals, species, biological and chemical processes, locations, data parameters and data types are important search interests in biodiversity research. The comparison with existing metadata standards shows that domain-specific standards cover search interests quite well, whereas general standards do not explicitly contain elements that reflect search interests. We inspect metadata from five large data repositories. Our results confirm that metadata currently poorly reflect search interests in biodiversity research. From these findings, we derive recommendations for researchers and data repositories how to bridge the gap between search interest and metadata provided.

Recently, global epidemic models that uses climatological factors have been shown to explain influenza activities for both temperate and tropical regions. In this paper, we extend these global models by including interactions of climatological factors. We find that countries in Europe and Australia have higher forecast skill, indicating the stronger relationship of influenza with climatological factors, than regions in other continents. The influenza activities of 47 (83%) countries can be explained with a closer match using multi-factor interactions along with original factors than only using the original factors. © 2020, ICST institute for computer sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

By integrating both energy harvesting and backscatter communication technologies, so-called `battery-free tag' emerges as a promising solution to the energy related issues in IoT. However, such tags present new challenges due to the unstable energy supply and excitation signals, which are critical to realize successful backscatter communications. In this paper, we present a novel system, denoted as ecUWB, which enables robust communication for battery-free tags where unstable WiFi signals act as the unified source for both energy supply and excitation signals. At tag side, we propose a charging-transmission division scheme to achieve better signal utilization, and introduce a re-transmission mechanism for possible excitation signal interruption. At receiver side, we implement a simply method which is based on DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) to predict the uncontrollable signals, and propose an energy-centric tag scheduling method according to the tag energy estimation results. Extensive experiments are carried out on customized tags and NI USRP platform. The results show that ecUWB outperforms the existing ones in terms of performance and efficiency under the unstable WiFi signals.

In future 5G systems, it is envisioned that the physical resources of a single network will be dynamically shared between the virtual end-to-end networks called “slices” and the network is “sliced”. The dynamic sharing of resources can bring about pooling gains, but different slices can easily influence each other. Focusing on slicing the radio access network, a slice management entity is required to steer the radio resource management (RRM) so that all of the slices are satisfied and negative inter-slice influences are minimized. The steering of RRM can be done by adjusting slice-specific control parameters in scheduler and admission controller mechanisms. We use a model-free reinforcement learning (RL) framework and train an agent as a slice manager. Simulation results show that such agents are capable of relatively quickly learning how to steer the RRM. Furthermore, a hybrid method of Jacobian-matrix approximation with RL approach has been devised and shown to be a practical and efficient solution.

Graphaf: A flow-based autoregressive model for molecular graph generation

Molecular graph generation is a fundamental problem for drug discovery and has been attracting growing attention. The problem is challenging since it requires not only generating chemically valid molecular structures but also optimizing their chemical properties in the meantime. Inspired by the recent progress in deep generative models, in this paper we propose a flow-based autoregressive model for graph generation called GraphAF. GraphAF combines the advantages of both autoregressive and flow-based approaches and enjoys: (1) high model flexibility for data density estimation;(2) efficient parallel computation for training;(3) an iterative sampling process, which allows leveraging chemical domain knowledge for valency checking. Experimental results show that GraphAF is able to generate 68% chemically valid molecules even without chemical knowledge rules and 100% valid molecules with chemical rules. The training process of GraphAF is two times faster than the existing state-of-the-art approach GCPN. After fine-tuning the model for goal-directed property optimization with reinforcement learning, GraphAF achieves state-of-the-art performance on both chemical property optimization and constrained property optimization.
