With announcing their "Parastronaut Feasibility Project", the European Space Agency ESA promises to make every reasonable effort to send astronauts with disability to space. This could spark hope in the 15% of all people who live with some form of disability. However, the fine-print of the announcement sets overly tight boundaries to "acceptable" disabilities, allowing only malformations that are expected to have a positive impact on the parastronaut's performance in space. By doing so, ESA is following decade-old traditions in space flight, with some inclusion for the sake of inclusion and public opinion. Instead of accommodating people with disabilities, ESA should send a strong signal for inclusion and truly challenge people with disabilities so they can and will tease out the best of their qualities. © 2021, CC BY.

Determining the spectrum and wave functions of excited states of a system is crucial in quantum physics and chemistry. Low-depth quantum algorithms, such as the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) and its variants, can be used to determine the ground-state energy. However, current approaches to computing excited states require numerous controlled unitaries, making the application of the original Variational Quantum Deflation (VQD) algorithm to problems in chemistry or physics suboptimal. In this study, we introduce a charge-preserving VQD (CPVQD) algorithm, designed to incorporate symmetry and the corresponding conserved charge into the VQD framework. This results in dimension reduction, significantly enhancing the efficiency of excitedstate computations. We present benchmark results with GPU-accelerated simulations using systems up to 24 qubits, showcasing applications in high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and quantum chemistry. The last two decades have witnessed a large number of proposals on the last-level cache (LLC) replacement policy aiming to minimize the number of LLC read misses. Another independent large body of work has explored mechanisms to address the inefficiencies arising from the DRAM writes introduced by the LLC replacement policy. These DRAM scheduling proposals, however, leave the LLC replacement policy unchanged and, as a result, miss the opportunity of synergistically shaping and scheduling the DRAM write bandwidth demand. In this paper, we argue that DRAM read and write bandwidth demands must be coordinated carefully from the LLC side and hence, introduce bandwidth-awareness in the LLC policy. Our bandwidth-aware LLC policy proposal enables long uninterrupted stretches of DRAM reads while maintaining the efficiency of the last-level cache and controlling precisely when and for how long writes can demand DRAM bandwidth. Our proposal comfortably outperforms the state-of-the-art eager DRAM write scheduling proposals and bridges 75% of the performance gap between the baseline and a hypothetical system that deploys an unbounded DRAM write buffer.

Large, well described gaps exist in both what we know and what we need to know to address the biodiversity crisis. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers new potential for filling these knowledge gaps, but where the biggest and most influential gains could be made remains unclear. To date, biodiversity-related uses of AI have largely focused on tracking and monitoring of wildlife populations. Rapid progress is being made in the use of AI to build phylogenetic trees and species distribution models. However, AI also has considerable unrealized potential in the re-evaluation of important ecological questions, especially those that require the integration of disparate and inherently complex data types, such as images, video, text, audio and DNA. This Review describes the current and potential future use of AI to address seven clearly defined shortfalls in biodiversity knowledge. Recommended steps for AI-based improvements include the re-use of existing image data and the development of novel paradigms, including the collaborative generation of new testable hypotheses. The resulting expansion of biodiversity knowledge could lead to science spanning from genes to ecosystems — advances that might represent our best hope for meeting the rapidly approaching 2030 targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Urban forests are crucial for the population well-being and improvement of the quality of life. For example, they contribute to the rain damping and to the improvement of the local climate. Therefore a correct and accurate mapping of this resource is fundamental for its correct management. We investigated a method that combines machine learning and SLIC superpixel techniques using different Superpixels (k) number to map trees in the metropolitan region of the municipality of Campo Grande-MS, Brazil with aerial orthoimages with GSD (Ground Sample Distance) of 10 cm. The combination of superpixels and machine learning algorithms were checked out with a set of weka classifiers and achieved good results i.e. F-1 %98.2, MCC %88.4 and Accuracy of %96.8, supporting that this method is efficient when used for urban trees mapping. © 2020 International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. Artistic Style in Robotic Painting;a Machine Learning Approach to Learning Brushstroke from Human Artists

— Robotic painting has been a subject of interest among both artists and roboticists since the 1970s. Researchers and interdisciplinary artists have employed various painting techniques and human-robot collaboration models to create visual mediums on canvas. One of the challenges of robotic painting is to apply a desired artistic style to the painting. Style transfer techniques with machine learning models have helped us address this challenge with the visual style of a specific painting. However, other manual elements of style, i.e., painting techniques and brushstrokes of an artist, have not been fully addressed. We propose a method to integrate an artistic style to the brushstrokes and the painting process through collaboration with a human artist. In this paper, we describe our approach to 1) collect brushstrokes and hand-brush motion samples from an artist, and 2) train a generative model to generate brushstrokes that pertains to the artist’s style, and 3) fine tune a stroke-based rendering model to work with our robotic painting setup. We will report on the integration of these three steps in a separate publication. In a preliminary study, 71% of human evaluators find our reconstructed brushstrokes are pertaining to the characteristics of the artist’s style. Moreover, 58% of participants could not distinguish a painting made by our method from a visually similar painting created by a human artist. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

As 5G networks rolling out in many different countries nowadays, the time has come to investigate how to upgrade and expand them towards 6G, where the latter is expected to realize the interconnection of everything as well as the development of a ubiquitous intelligent mobile world for intelligent life. To enable this epic leap in communications, this article provides an overview and outlook on the application of sparse code multiple access (SCMA) for 6G wireless communication systems, which is an emerging disruptive non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme for the enabling of massive connectivity. We propose to apply SCMA to a massively distributed access system (MDAS), whose architecture is based on fiber-based visible light communication (FVLC), ultra-dense network (UDN), and NOMA. Under this framework, we consider the interactions between optical front-hauls and wireless access links. In order to stimulate more upcoming research in this area, we outline a number of promising directions associated with SCMA for faster, more reliable, and more efficient multiple access in future 6G communication networks. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

An overview of existing urban software mobile applications of the transport and economic direction is given. A model of a functional rationalizer of consumer behavior is being built. The software model of the functional rationalizer of consumer behavior (SM FRCB) was developed for the first time. PMFRCB allows the user to expand the number of his preferred needs (occupations, activities) during the daily cycle through intelligent recommendations. Also, SM FRCB allows you to optimize needs (activities, activities) at the cost and rate of their use. The SM FRCB is made in Python_3 using the libraries matplotlib, collections, numpy, pyplot, mplot3d. The analysis of consumer behavior before and after using the functional rationalizer model is carried out. The graphical results of a structural analysis of the costs of old and new consumer behavior, analysis of consumer behavior within the boundaries of the theory of possibilities and the model of transport behavior of a resident before and after applying the functional rationalizer model are presented. The prospects of further improving the SM FRCB are considered. © 2020 IEEE.

A Non-Stop Double Buffering Mechanism for Dataflow architecture

Double buffering is an effective mechanism to hide the latency of data transfers between on-chip and off-chip memory. However, in dataflow architecture, the swapping of two buffers during the execution of many tiles decreases the performance because of repetitive filling and draining of the dataflow accelerator. In this work, we propose a non-stop double buffering mechanism for dataflow architecture. The proposed non-stop mechanism assigns tiles to the processing element array without stopping the execution of processing elements through optimizing control logic in dataflow architecture. Moreover, we propose a work-flow program to cooperate with the non-stop double buffering mechanism. After optimizations both on control logic and on work-flow program, the filling and draining of the array needs to be done only once across the execution of all tiles belonging to the same dataflow graph. Experimental results show that the proposed double buffering mechanism for dataftow architecture achieves a 16.2% average efficiency improvement over that without the optimization.
