In an Internet of Things (IoT) environment, network traffic monitoring tasks are intractable to achieve due to various IoT traffic types. Recently, the development of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) enables outstanding flexibility and scalability abilities in network control and management, thereby providing a potential approach to mitigate challenges in monitoring the IoT traffic. In this paper, we propose an IoT traffic monitoring approach that implements deep reinforcement learning technique to maximize the fine-grained monitoring capability, i.e., level of traffic statistics details, for several IoT traffic groups. Specifically, we first study a flow-rule matching control system constrained by different expected levels of statistics details and by the flow-table limit of the SDN-based gateway device. We then formulate our control optimization problem by employing the Markov decision process (MDP). Afterwards, we develop Double Deep Q-Network (DDQN) algorithm to quickly obtain the optimal flow-rule matching control policy. Through the extensive experiments, the obtained results verify that the proposed approach yields outstanding improvements in terms of the ability to simultaneously provide different required degrees of statistics details while protecting the gateway devices from being overflowed in comparisons with those of the conventional Q-learning method and the typical SDN flow rule setting. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The emergency of machine type and ultra-reliable low latency communication is imposing stringent constraints for service provisioning. Addressing such constraints is challenging for network and cloud service providers. As a trending paradigm, software-defined networking (SDN) plays a significant role in future networks and services. However, the classical implementation of the SDN controller has limitations in-terms-of latency and reliability since the controller is decoupled from the forwarding device. Several research works have tried to tackle these challenges by proposing solutions such as Devoflow, DIFANE, and hierarchical and distributed controller deployment. Nonetheless, these approaches are not fully addressing these challenges. This paper tries to address the problem of latency and reliability by proposing a dynamic controller role delegation architecture for forwarding devices. To align with the microservice or multi-agent-based service-based architecture, the role delegation function as a service is proposed. The dynamic role delegation enables to predict and (pre-)installed flow rules in the forwarding devices based on various considerations such as network state, packet type, and service's stringent requirements. The proposed architecture is implemented and evaluated for latency and resiliency performance in comparison to the centralized and distributed deployment of the SDN controller. We used ComNetsEmu, a softwarized network emulation tool, to emulate SDN and NFV (Network Function Virtualization). The result indicated a significant decrease in latency and improved resilience in case of failure, yielding better network performance.

He is currently working on the development of satellite-based ATM transport and switching architectures for BISDN and Defense Information System Network amlications. Dr. Pond is a member of IEEE. Victor O. K. Li was born in Hong Kong in 1954. He received his SB SM and Sc.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge Massachusetts in 1977 1979 and 1981 respectively. Since February 1981 he has been with the University of Southern California (USC) LOS Angeles California where he is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the USC Communication Sciences Institute. He has published 150 technical papers and has lectured and consulted extensively around the world. His research interests include high-speed communication networks personal communication networks intelligent networks distributed databases queueing theory graph theory and applied probability. Dr. Li is very active in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) having been a member of the Computer Communications Technical Committee since 1983 and having served as Chairman from 1987–1989. In this, the second part of a two-part paper, the required time for establishing a mobile packet radio network using the virtual circuit and time division multiple access protocol developed in Part 1 is analysed. Tools are developed to determine the virtual circuit and network set-up times in terms of the channel bandwidth allocated to establish and maintain the network. The tools are then extended to include the effects of user mobility. Then these results are combined with the network capacity results of Part 1 to analyse the trade-off between the data rate and set-up time of the network. Next a hierarchical architecture is proposed and the network data rate versus set-up time trade-off of this architecture is analysed using these tools. This architecture is shown to both provide a higher data rate and establish faster than flat networks of the same number of nodes.

The concept of network virtualization offers the promising possibility for parallel deployment of network solutions that can be based on different protocol stacks. The way of implementation of network virtualization plays essential role in deployment of the mentioned concept. This paper proposes a novel solution for implementation of the IPv6 QoS System in the virtualized environment. This system exploits moreover modern network solutions like: IPv6 protocol, data and control plane separation, and it follows NGN and DiffServ architectures.

The article discusses an analytical method of determining average bandwidth offered to a user in UMTS applying HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) and HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) technologies. The application of HSDPA/HSUPA increases the transmission speed between the base station and the end-user's terminal in UMTS networks. This has, in turn, made it possible for cellular systems operators to offer new services that require greater data flow both in the uplink direction and downlink direction such as, e.g., broadband Internet access.

This paper presents an approach to simulation investigations of a full-availability group with multi-rate Poisson, Bernoulli and Pascal traffic streams. In the paper the models of a full-availability group with and without bandwidth reservation are described. The particular distributions of various traffic streams are also presented. The proposed simulator is based on events-scheduling approach. The paper deals also with implementation issues related to simulation research of the systems with Bernoulli, Poisson and Pascal traffic streams.

Quality of Experience (QoE) combines non-technical parameters such as user perception, experience and expectations with technical parameters such as application- and network-level Quality of Service (QoS). For service or network providers, it is important to understand the quantitative relationship between QoE and these technical parameters in order to manage the user-perceived quality. This paper investigates the different impacts of a) provisioning and b) delivery problems due to insufficient resources on QoE, leading to the QoE provisioning-delivery hysteresis (QoE-PDH). We demonstrate the QoE-PDH for Voice-over-IP, live video streaming, and web browsing based on existing measurement studies. The results clearly quantify the necessity to control quality, instead of suffering from uncontrollable impacts like packet loss caused by congestion. The implementation and the limitations of the QoE-PDH in the current Internet is shown using the example of Skype. Afterwards we discuss how these results can be used to enhance energy-efficient service provisioning and delivery in the Future Internet.

As space agencies are planning manned missions to reach Mars, researchers need to pave the way for supporting astronauts during their sojourn. This will also be achieved by providing broadband and low-latency connectivity through wireless network infrastructures. In such a framework, we propose a Martian deployment of a 3-Dimensional (3D) network acting as Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN). The scenario consists, mostly, of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and nanosatellites. Thanks to the thin Martian atmosphere, CubeSats can stably orbit at very-low-altitude. This allows to meet strict delay requirements to split functions of the baseband processing between drones and CubeSats. The detailed analytical study, presented in this paper, confirmed the viability of the proposed 3D architecture, under some constraints and trade-off concerning the involved Space communication infrastructures, that are discussed in detail. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is a concept that aims at providing network operators with benefits in terms of cost, flexibility, and vendor independence by utilizing virtualization techniques to run network functions as software on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware. In contrast, prior solutions rely on specialized hardware for each function. Performance evaluation of such systems usually requires a dedicated testbed for each individual component. Rather than analyzing these proprietary black-box components, Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) are pieces of software that run on COTS hardware and whose properties can be investigated in a generic testbed. However, depending on the underlying hardware, operating system, and implementation, VNFs might behave differently. Therefore, mechanisms for the performance evaluation of VNFs should be similar to benchmarking of software, where different implementations are compared by applying them to predefined test cases and scenarios. This work presents a first step towards a benchmarking framework for VNFs. Given two different implementations of a VNF that acts as LTE Serving Gateway (SGW), influence factors and key performance indicators are identified and a comparison between the two mechanisms is drawn.
