This article proposes a new calculation method for a determination of traffic characteristics in switching networks with multiservice traffic sources carrying multicast traffic. The analytical method described in the paper can be used to determine the point-to-point blocking probability in switching networks with multicast connections. In this method, each traffic source can generate calls of different service classes. The proposed calculation method is approximate, therefore the results of calculations are compared with the results of simulation experiments. The simulation results confirm acceptable accuracy of the proposed analytical method.

This paper addresses the transmission-aware transceiver allocation problem of flexible optical networks for a multi-period planning. The proposed approach aims at assigning the best configuration of bandwidth variable transceivers (BV-TRX) considering the amplifier noise and nonlinear channel interferences using the incoherent Extended Gaussian Noise (EGN) model. The proposed solution improves the network throughput and spectrum utilization in the early planning periods and allocates lower number of BV-TRXs in later periods in comparison to algorithms presented recently. A heuristic approach to regenerator placement has also been applied achieving up to 25% transceiver and 50% spectrum utilization savings in comparison to configurations without regenerators. © 2021 IFIP TC6 WG6.10.

This paper presents a concept for a simulator for cloud computing environment. According to the assumptions, and in intention, the simulator will make studies on cloud efficiency (from the cloud operator's perspective) possible. One of its possible applications will be then the evaluation of cloud effectiveness in a situation where, for example, new services have been introduced or existing service parameters have been changed. Results obtained by this simulator can be also used in validation and verification of analytical models proposed for a cloud environment. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

When conceiving molecular communication (MC) systems, it is of utmost importance to determine the threshold value for decoding bits and producing the smaller bit error rate (BER). At this optimum, the BER has the smallest value, and errors in the reception can be minimized, thereby improving the minimal throughput of molecular means. Despite its importance, prior research still presents little applicability and insights obtaining the optimal threshold for real testbeds. Filling this gap, in this paper, we feature a low-complex algorithm for the optimal threshold in single-input single-output (SISO) testbeds. Using a self-adaptive method, we assess a threshold close to the optimal, whereas the BER results are close to the minimum achievable. Furthermore, we show that for real existing molecular communication systems, an optimum can also be determined with respect to the BER. The BER can thus be reduced by up to 90 %. © 2022 IEEE.

Statistical methods and models based on quality of experience distributions

Due to biased assumptions on the underlying ordinal rating scale in subjective Quality of Experience (QoE) studies, Mean Opinion Score (MOS)-based evaluations provide results, which are hard to interpret and can be misleading. This paper proposes to consider the full QoE distribution for evaluating, reporting, and modeling QoE results instead of relying on MOS-based metrics derived from results based on ordinal rating scales. The QoE distribution can be represented in a concise way by using the parameters of a multinomial distribution without losing any information about the underlying QoE ratings, and even keeps backward compatibility with previous, biased MOS-based results. Considering QoE results as a realization of a multinomial distribution allows to rely on a well-established theoretical background, which enables meaningful evaluations also for ordinal rating scales. Moreover, QoE models based on QoE distributions keep detailed information from the results of a QoE study of a technical system, and thus, give an unprecedented richness of insights into the end users’ experience with the technical system. In this work, existing and novel statistical methods for QoE distributions are summarized and exemplary evaluations are outlined. Furthermore, using the novel concept of quality steps, simulative and analytical QoE models based on QoE distributions are presented and showcased. The goal is to demonstrate the fundamental advantages of considering QoE distributions over MOS-based evaluations if the underlying rating data is ordinal in nature.

The paper proposes an analytical method for determining basic traffic characteristics of systems servicing multi-rate overflow traffic streams generated by a finite number of sources. The basis of the proposed analytical model is the Bretschneider method extended in this paper for systems with multi-rate traffic. Analytical results of blocking probability calculated using the presented methodology have been compared with the data obtained from the system simulation process.

In this paper we present the way of saving electrical energy in high-tech telecommunication and computer networks. To achieve this aim, the work focuses on the description of the current state and the future trends of changes, as well as it analyses the possibility of energy-saving solutions based on the Clos switching network architectures used in switching networks. A simulation program has been implemented to estimate multi-stage switching system energy consumption. This program enabled to check the operating quality (how much energy was saved by the structure during packet forwarding or rejecting), routing algorithms (sequential algorithm, quasi-random algorithm and Beneš algorithm) and their modifications that optimize the achieved results.

The present article proposes an analytical model of the WCDMA radio interface that is based on the concept of Erlang's Ideal Grading (EIG) with multi-rate traffic. The proposed approach is very simple and makes it possible to include in the calculations the interference influence from other cells of the UMTS network through a determination of appropriate values of the availability parameter. The results of the analytical calculations for cells of the UMTS network are compared with the data obtained in a computer simulation. The present study confirms the usability of the EIG model for the analysis of radio interfaces limited by the influence of interference.

Changes in traffic characteristics impose new requirements on interconnection network in large data centers. These requirements force changes to be done in the network architecture and used technology. Traditional tree network topology is being replaced by Clos network, called also Leaf-Spine topology, and optical interconnection networks are added in parallel to conventional electronic switching networks. Circuit switching is also used in such network instead of packet switching. In this paper we analyze the three-stage Clos network in which three multiplexing schemes are used simultaneously on input, output, and interstage links and with circuit switching mode. Strict-sense nonblocking conditions for this network with three multiplexing levels (space, wavelength, and mode) are derived and proved. Up till now such network with at most two multiplexing levels (space and time, or space and wavelength) has been considered.

The Mars Helicopter Scout left a milestone in the history of the mankind by successfully completing the first flight on Mars. This achievement opens up to the possibility of having many unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) acquiring data from the Martian surface along with firmly anchored machines on ground, such as moving rovers or static landers. Moreover, it is no surprise that space agencies are also paving the way for the first human landing on the Red planet. In this context, it becomes needed to support future missions by providing connectivity to the whole Martian surface in order to allow in-situ wide band data exchange between nodes-user equipments (UEs)-composing the overall network. However, it seems tough to move common mobile terrestrial infrastructures on Mars and install them on-ground or implement them on limited-resource machines, as well as to guarantee everywhere and anytime on-demand connectivity. Thus, this paper will investigate the alternative solution of developing an autonomous Martian space ecosystem, through which globally inter-connect the UEs. UAVs and, eventually, high altitude pseudo satellites (HAPS), will act as radio unit (RU) and, partially, as distributed unit (DU) of a cloud radio access network (CRAN), while small satellites platforms, such as CubeSats (CS), placed in orbit will embark the majority of the computational load by performing the remaining DU and centralized unit (CU) functions. The proposed 3D network configuration, which looks towards a 'Beyond 5G' infrastructure, or even 6G, will start by supposing very low Mars orbit (VLMO) in which CubeSats will be deployed. The design will then proceed through the installation process of CRAN on drones and CubeSats, while respecting strict latency and bandwidth requirements imposed by the Common Public Radio Interface standard (CPRI) at the fronthaul (FH) to allow low PHY-layer splitting options.
