Network virtualization is proposed in several research work as a means to overcome the ossification of the Internet. Its application relies on embedding algorithms to instantiate virtual networks on substrate infrastructures. Notably, those considered in the scope of traffic-engineering are developed to focus on efficient resource utilization with the aim of increasing the acceptance ratio of the algorithms. In this paper, a demand-based virtual link embedding approach for multi-service mapping in programmable industrial networks is proposed. The approach aims at increasing the overall acceptance ratio of virtual link embedding algorithms by increasing the acceptance of demand critical requests. The goal is achieved by minimizing the deviation between requested demands and the resources satisfying the demand. The approach, when analyzed against state-of-the-art shortest path approaches under the same simulation conditions, shows good results in terms of utilization of the network resources, acceptance of delay-critical traffic demands and overall acceptance ratio.

Topology control in a wireless sensor network is useful for ensuring that the network remains connected in the presence of nodes that exhaust their energy or become altogether dysfunctional (for whatever reasons). It also ensures that all the link that can be established are energy-efficient links and the nodes utilize their energy fairly. In this paper, we propose a fair and energy efficient topology control protocol for a two-dimensional random sensor deployment in which the nodes can estimate the distances to their neighbors and vary their transmission power accordingly. The protocol applies a neighbor eligibility metric in order to ensure a fair distribution of energy in the network. We introduce the notion of weighted relaying regions defined over the plane of a searching node to drop out inefficient links. Unlike most topology control protocols that rely on nearest neighbor approaches, we use a distance measure that is radio characteristic and channel condition dependent. We verify the performance of the protocol through simulation results on network graph properties and energy consumption.

In many different sorts of businesses, including public and private, government, critical infrastructures, etc., web apps have grown recently. Therefore, securing web applications is a major concern to protect businesses from loss and unauthorized access to sensitive information. Developers use vulnerable thirdparty modules or components or create programming security flaws themselves and occasionally work with tight budgets. These situations frequently cause people to overlook a crucial aspect of development life cycle security. This paper studies and tests the currently available web security and exploitation tools of OWASP's top ten security vulnerabilities. The main aim of this paper is to improve the detection of OWASP's top ten security vulnerabilities by proposing an exploitation and detection tool that combined features of the tools that has been tested in the paper.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing has become the killer application in the wired Internet and might also be highly attractive for mobile networks. In particular since UMTS operators are searching for new applications which do both: a) exploit the potential of the UMTS technology and b) motivate the user to adopt the new technology. In this work we are investigating the performance of an eDonkey-based mobile P2P file-sharing system by means of time-dynamic simulation. Mobile networks differ from wireline networks by the limited capacity of the radio link and the mobility of the users. P2P networks, in contrast, are overlays which consider the transport network in an abstract way. In a mobile environment, the question arises, whether the abstraction can be maintained and what will be the performance impact if there is any. We will show in detail how the mobile access technology (GPRS or UMTS), the churn behavior of mobile users, the file size of mobile specific content, and special infrastructure entities, such as a cache peer, influences the performance of the suggested mobile P2P file-sharing service.

Dr. Pond is currently a scientist at Hughes Space and Communications Company having joined in 1980. He has worked in the fields of communication system design mobile communication network and spacecraft payload design. He is currently working on the development of satellite-based ATM transport and switching architectures for BISDN and Defense Information System Network amlications. Dr. Pond is a member of IEEE. Victor O. K. Li was born in Hong Kong in 1954. He received his SB SM and Sc.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge Massachusetts in 1977 1979 and 1981 respectively. Since February 1981 he has been with the University of Southern California (USC) LOS Angeles California where he is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the USC Communication Sciences Institute. He has published 150 technical papers and has lectured and consulted extensively around the world. His research interests include high-speed communication networks personal communication networks intelligent networks distributed databases queueing theory graph theory and applied probability. In this, the second part of a two-part paper, the required time for establishing a mobile packet radio network using the virtual circuit and time division multiple access protocol developed in Part 1 is analysed. Tools are developed to determine the virtual circuit and network set-up times in terms of the channel bandwidth allocated to establish and maintain the network. The tools are then extended to include the effects of user mobility. Then these results are combined with the network capacity results of Part 1 to analyse the trade-off between the data rate and set-up time of the network. Next a hierarchical architecture is proposed and the network data rate versus set-up time trade-off of this architecture is analysed using these tools. This architecture is shown to both provide a higher data rate and establish faster than flat networks of the same number of nodes.

Mobile networks differ from their wireline counterparts mainly by the high costs for air transmissions and by the mobility of the users. A new entity, denoted as the crawling peer, is suggested in order to optimize the resource mediation mechanism for a mobile P2P file sharing application. The crawling peer locates content on behalf of mobile peers. It is placed in the wireline part of the mobile network and thus, does not suffer from the above mentioned restrictions. The crawling peer is part of a comprehensive mobile P2P file sharing architecture [1] which is based on the popular eDonkey file sharing application. The performance of three querying strategies of the crawling peer is investigated with respect to banning at the index servers and the response time of requests, i.e. the time to find a file. The results show that the selection of an appropriate request strategy for the crawling peer maximizes the probabihty of locating a file while the probability to be banned by an eDonkey index server is minimized.

The exponential growth of information technology and the prospect of increased public access to the computing, communications, and storage resources have made these systems more vulnerable to attacks. Use of heterogeneous devices and communication links has become a common practice which further exacerbates the management of security services of these systems. A widely accepted management principle is that an activity cannot be managed if it cannot be measured. Security also falls in this rubric. However, the complexity of today's large scale heterogeneous systems makes it impossible to measure its security by simple examination. Moreover, for most users it is hardly possible to conduct more detailed checks, which are necessary for a qualified evaluation, as they can not afford the expenditure this would entail. The need to protect these systems is fueling the need of quantifying security metrics to determine the exact level of security assurances. In this article, we have identified those entities of a large scale heterogeneous system that enforce the security services and also those which are relevant to the security services. We have filtered out the measurable entities to simplify the metrics tree with optimal granularity. These entities serve as probes for the evaluation of the overall security assurance of the system. Based on these probes, topological and dependency graphs of the overall system are evaluated and federated for the system security cockpit that represents the interface for the administrator to perform necessary operations in order to obtain and maintain a particular security assurance level for a specified service. In order to provide a comprehensive and evaluative description of the various functions of our model, we have given a use case example of a telecommunication service $voice over the Internet protocol (VoIP)

Mobile infrastructure and in particular radio access network (RAN) sharing is becoming an important topic that mobile network operators are evaluating and considering in their expansion plans and investments decision. The arguments for network sharing are well known. It can substantially reduce CAPEX and OPEX, potentially increase the speed of network rollouts, improve coverage and help meet the capacity demands of increased data traffic. However, such projects are very complex and require significant alignment and commitment between operators that typically compete. This paper shares experiences and suggestions from one of the first consolidation project at this scale in Europe between Orange and T-Mobile Poland.

The overall Industry 4.0 (I4.0) developments combined with the disruptive process of IT-based digitalisation create a vast amount of new opportunities but also challenges for the industrial automation domain. The combination of hybrid (wired & wireless) communication architectures, already widely installed legacy technologies, new approaches, such as Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) or 5G, and the general heterogeneity of the industrial landscape results in a high configuration complexity. This creates the necessity for future-proof industrial communication network management systems. Therefore, this paper summarises the current state of the art in this area in order to identify the specific requirements towards future industrial network management systems. The most promising candidate is the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) concept. To evaluate SDN as a possible enabler, specified industrial requirements are compared with the current technological and conceptual capabilities of SDN. In addition, drawbacks resulting in future research questions are identified.
