We address the problem of a multi-user relay network, where multiple single-antenna node pairs want to exchange information by using a multiple antenna relay node. Due to the half-duplex constraint of the relay, the exchange of information takes place in two steps. In the first step, the nodes transmit their data to the relay, while in the second step, the relay is broadcasting the data by using linear and non-linear precoding strategies. We focus on the second step in this paper. We first consider the problem of maximizing the overall rate achievable using linear and dirty-paper type precoding strategies at the relay. Then, we consider minimizing the total power at the relay subject to individual SINR constraints using the same strategies at the relay. We show that the downlink-uplink duality does not hold for the setup considered here, which is a somewhat surprising result. We also show that the beamforming strategy which is optimal in the single-pair case performs very well in the multi-pair case for practically relevant SNR. The results are illustrated by numerical simulations.

Enforcing the right of access to personal data usually is a long-running process between a data subject and an organization that processes personal data. As of today, this task is commonly realized using a manual process based on postal communication or personal attendance and ends up conflicting with trade secret protection. In this paper, we present an automated architecture to enable exercising the right of access in the domain of inter-organizational business processes based on Web Services technology. Deriving its requirements from the legal, economical, and technical obligations, we show the architecture's overall approach solving the conflict between trade secret and exercising the right of access.

The Internet of Bio-Nano Things (IoBNT) is envisioned to be a heterogeneous network of artificial and natural units that are connected to the Internet. Hence, it extends the connectivity and control to unconventional domains, such as the human body. A potential use case for IoBNT is the communication from the outside to the inside of the human body. In this scenario, typically the Receiver (RX) inside the human body has limited computational complexity, while the Transmitter (TX) outside has large computational resources. In this paper, we address this scenario and propose a novel Asymmetric Auto-Encoder (AAEC) architecture for end-to-end learning of a Molecular Communication (MC) system. It applies a Neural Network (NN) at the TX and a low-complexity slope detector at the RX. We discuss the different layers of the NN-based TX and the corresponding training approach. Moreover, we investigate the explainability of the NN-based TX and show through the use of meta modeling that it can be approximated by a linear model. In addition, we demonstrate that the proposed AAEC resembles an MC system with Zero Forcing (ZF) precoding for low and moderate Inter Symbol Interference (ISI). Finally, through numerical results, we confirmed the aforementioned findings and showed that the proposed AAEC outperforms MC systems with and without ZF precoding, especially in high ISI scenarios.

Background: Electronic health records (EHRs) are critical health information technology tools that ensure accuracy and improved management of patient records. However, the use of EHRs can lead to significant burden and burnout among healthcare providers, potentially affecting the quality of care they deliver. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to determine the extent of burnout among healthcare providers who use EHRs, with the specific objectives of assessing the level of EHR-related burnout in Saudi Arabian hospitals and identifying the key EHR-related factors contributing to this burnout. Methods: A descriptive quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted. A valid and reliable questionnaire was distributed to healthcare providers in Saudi Arabian hospitals to measure their burnout levels associated with EHR usage. Results: The findings indicate that the use of EHRs contributes to healthcare provider burnout, which may diminish the quality of care provided to patients. Several variables were significantly related to the healthcare providers' personal burnout, i.e., their living area, age, job, and year of experience, although only the healthcare provider's age influences their work-related burnout significantly. On the other hand, working hours per week and number of patients per week significantly influence the healthcare provider's EHR-related burnout. Conclusion: The study suggests that EHR usage is a significant factor in healthcare provider burnout. Addressing this issue requires enhanced training, workload reduction, and prompt resolution of EHR-related problems to improve provider well-being and maintain high-quality patient care. © 2024

In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.

In this paper, the performance of a new movable boundary accessing (MBA) technique for future integrated services multibeam satellite systems is studied. The multiservice environment considered includes both asynchronous and isochronous traffic consisting of video, voice, file transfer and interactive data. The movable boundary access technique proposed here will maximize the utilization of the up-link frame capacity. It is shown that the potential user population is substantially increased with the use of a moving boundary policy with minimal overhead.

He joined the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University in 1991 where he was named a University Faculty Scholar in 1999 and promoted to Full Professor in 2001. Since August 2001 he has been a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor of Mathematics at Colorado State University. His current interests are in communication networks and optimization methods. He coauthored the best-selling book An Introduction to Optimization 2nd Edition Wiley-Interscience 2001. He received the NSF CAREER Award in 1995 and the ASEE Frederick Emmons Terman Award in 1998. He coauthored a paper that was awarded Best Paper in the journal Computer Networks 2003. Professor Chong is a Fellow of the IEEE. Solution techniques for Markov decision problems rely on exact knowledge of the transition rates, which may be difficult or impossible to obtain. In this paper, we consider Markov decision problems with uncertain transition rates represented as compact sets. We first consider the problem of sensitivity analysis where the aim is to quantify the range of uncertainty of the average per-unit-time reward given the range of uncertainty of the transition rates. We then develop solution techniques for the problem of obtaining the max-min optimal policy, which maximizes the worst-case average per-unit-time reward. In each of these problems, we distinguish between systems that can have their transition rates chosen independently and those where the transition rates depend on each other. Our solution techniques are applicable to Markov decision processes with fixed but unknown transition rates and to those with time-varying transition rates.
