Evaluation of biological deployable systems

The paper presents a survey of deployable structural systems found in some biological organisms. Four biological systems are presented and analysed in terms of their morphology, kinematics and structural characteristics. This presentation is followed by an evaluation of the similarity of the biological systems with existing deployable structures and of potential applications. The four biological systems surveyed are two types of insect wings - Coleoptera (beetles) and locust;locomotion of the earthworm;and the jaw of the egg eater snake (Dasypeltis). These systems represent a diversity of deployable mechanisms. The paper concludes by associating the surveyed and other biological systems with known deployable structural systems such as: folded plates, tensioned membrane, pneumatic tubes (pneus) and structures composed of articulated rigid members.

This paper establishes a connection between object tracking from a systems point of view and the job-scheduling or job-shop problem. Often, surveillance areas cannot be fully monitored by a set of smart cameras at any given point in time. Decisions have to be made, which objects are to be tracked. The computer vision aspects of object tracking have made substantial strides which permits for elaborately planning the monitoring jobs. In this paper, object tracking is handled as a job-scheduling problem. As a result, tracked objects are considered as scheduling jobs that rely on smart cameras as resources that follow according tracking policies. The presented job-scheduling approach is based on proactive quotations advertised by the jobs. The main advantages of this algorithm are the avoidance of negotiation chains and the acceptance of local non-optimal solutions to benefit the overall performance.

The Time-Domain Finite Element Method is used extensively in areas of microwave engineering. However, TD-FEM runs too slow for some simulations to be practical, especially when run on standard personal computers. The propriety of hardware for the acceleration of TD-FEM computations has been investigated. It is well known that the key of TD-FEM is matrix operation. There always be an obstacle that the speedup of dense matrices operations in Graphics Processor Units fields. This situation will be improved in next generation. Even though the presence of the obstacle, the standard consumer Graphics Processor Units (GPUs) can be used to accelerate TD-FEM simulations by a factor of close to two yet, relative to an Intel CPU of similar technology generation. With OpenGL as the Application Programming Interface (API), a standard commercial graphics card has been programmed to solve a 2-D electromagnetic radiation problem.

Sequential network simulation is a high time-consuming application, and with the emergence of global multihop networks and gigabit-per-second links is becoming a non-affordable problem with traditional simulations. New techniques for the acceleration of these simulations based on other hardware architectures are required. Previous approaches to simulation acceleration are based on parallel computing and reconfigurable completing. A short review of most outstanding approaches showing its benefits and problems is presented in the paper. A new approach based on mapping network simulations on reconfigurable hardware is presented. Most important features of this system are: the acceleration of the simulation by hardware, and the use of a high level network modeling language which allows a transparent use of the hardware by telecommunication engineers. The core of the proposed environment is an automatic tool that compiles the high-level network model and maps the simulator behaviour into the hardware. © 1999 IEEE.

Industrie 4.0 (I4.0) is the fourth industrial revolution, which will see the digital transformation of manufacturing, through the integration on Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Data and Services, and the convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT). With any such transformation, there exists challenges that must first be addressed for a successful outcome. For I4.0, these are interoperability and security, which respectively arise from the interconnection of devices from different manufacturers and/or with different communication protocols;and the interconnection of networks with competing critical and non-critical traffic, and the increased access to initially isolated networks. This paper presents an overview of standards, such as IEC 62443, the ISO 27000 series, IEC 62541 Open Connectivity Unified architecture (OPC UA) and Time Sensitive Networks (TSN) (IEEE 1722-2016), which addresses these challenges. © 2017 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). Effective design of shared mediated spaces, information and connectedness requires theory and practice from a range of disciplines such as found in European projects like Together Anywhere, Together Anytime (TA2) and the EIT ICT Labs Mediating Presence activity. Building on this work we continue to investigate the changes in the European digital media industry such as changed traditional distribution of media content and the progressive integration of (social) communication means in information distribution and shared mediated spaces. Our past research has given valuable insights in how to design and evaluate systems and services that provide a high quality of experience, in how trust is established in mediated environments, and how the formation of tacit communication between participants in new distributed and connected media is negotiated. In the new Seventh Framework Program project COnnected Media and Presence from European Institute of Technology (COMPEIT) we aim to enhance the quality of experience in face-to-face and broadcast communication further in three domains: 1) Spatial connectedness, 2) Social connectedness and 3) Information connectedness, by developing three key services: Shared Experience with Tangible Interaction (SETI);Broadcast Presence Studio (BPS) and Mixed-Reality Interaction (MRI). The quality of experience of these services will be enhanced in terms of for example: spatial connectedness, by providing shared spaces and supporting spatial features such as eye contact;social connectedness, by using natural means for interaction suiting different settings and activities;and information connectedness, by providing better means to share, manipulate and use information suiting different task or activities. In this paper we will discuss the background of this work and give an overview of our planned future work in COMPEIT. © 2013 ACM.

Exploring the Use of WebAssembly in HPC

Containerization approaches based on namespaces offered by the Linux kernel have seen an increasing popularity in the HPC community both as a means to isolate applications and as a format to package and distribute them. However, their adoption and usage in HPC systems faces several challenges. These include difficulties in unprivileged running and building of scientific application container images directly on HPC resources, increasing heterogeneity of HPC architectures, and access to specialized networking libraries available only on HPC systems. These challenges of container-based HPC application development closely align with the several advantages that a new universal intermediate binary format called WebAssembly (Wasm) has to offer. These include a lightweight userspace isolation mechanism and portability across operating systems and processor architectures. In this paper, we explore the usage of Wasm as a distribution format for MPI-based HPC applications. To this end, we present MPIWasm, a novel Wasm embedder for MPI-based HPC applications that enables high-performance execution of Wasm code, has low-overhead for MPI calls, and supports high-performance networking interconnects present on HPC systems. We evaluate the performance and overhead of MPIWasm on a production HPC system and AWS Graviton2 nodes using standardized HPC benchmarks. Results from our experiments demonstrate that MPIWasm delivers competitive native application performance across all scenarios. Moreover, we observe that Wasm binaries are 139.5x smaller on average as compared to the statically-linked binaries for the different standardized benchmarks. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. In this paper, we assert that window system plays a fundamental role in supporting multiple interaction channels distributed over a finite number of I/O devices. For historical as well as technical reasons, window systems usually deal with the issues which concern distribution of window system components, heterogeneity, user interface, multimedia, and distributed application support. We propose a minimal window system architecture which allows separate treatment of these issues. The minimal window system architecture serves as a basis for discussing the influence of these issues on each other. Also in the viewpoint of the transparency facilities inherent in a distributed system, a window system model based on the minimal window system is proposed for the distributed environment. © 1994 IEEE.

Prediction is an important cognitive activity in any decision-making process. For dynamic process control tasks, this activity is crucial, but studying it in a real-life environment is difficult. This article describes how a computerized simulation was used to study prediction in a complex environment. Using the simulation, the effects of many factors on the accuracy of prediction were successfully measured. These factors are mainly the nature of the task the method of presentation of the information, the number of repetitions of a specific task, and the length of the time taken for prediction. Three different tasks and four distinct interfaces were used in the simulation. Prediction was found to be significantly affected by all of the factors except the number of repetitions. Surprisingly, no learning effect was observed throughout the accomplishment of the various tasks. © 1998 Sage Publications, Inc.

This work presents a highly flexible mixed-signal CMOS image sensor suitable for smart camera applications. These systems need to fit different constraints regarding power consumption, speed and quality, and the optimal compromise may differ depending on the application. Moreover, the best implementation of a desired image processing task may be in the analog or the digital domain, or even a combined computation. Different aspects starting from the image sensor and signal acquisition up to the pre-processing in analog and digital domain are investigated in this paper to optimize not just one part of the system, but the whole system altogether. Moreover, it is shown that analog processing algorithms can improve signal quality, processing speed and latency while being able to save power, which is important for real-time systems. In order to be able to carry out spatial operations, the state-of-the-art sensor is modified to be able to read out multiple pixels at the same time. This allows analog spatial filter operations which consume significantly less power. As an example, an averaging filter is described which needs less than 5.3 % of the power–time product of a digital implementation for one computation. To enhance data throughput and flexibility, 3D chip stacking is proposed to partition the sensor in smaller units and enable massively parallel processing. © 2016, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
