A flexible, efficient and interoperable communication system is the basis of a pervasive environment. Unfortunately, the heterogenity on network and service levels results in a lot of constrains in such a communication environment. This demonstration paper presents an exemplary messaging solution for a unified use of services and devices in a heterogeneous communication network. The benefit of the presented approach becomes apparent in a pervasive communication scenario that interconnects real and virtual environments.

The public availability of virtual worlds, as for instance second life or the OpenSimulator, has introduced a new type of online learning, called ldquovirtual learningrdquo. Virtual learning is used to simulate face-to-face learning, to create new and innovative learning material and to interconnect distant learners. Unfortunately, the virtual environment is mostly exclusive and connections to other learning environments are rare stand-alone solutions with a lack of universal methologies. This paper depicts the benefit of ldquoimmersive learningrdquo in the context of a systematic and flexible fusion of virtual learning and computer-aided face-to-face learning. This fusion leads to ad hoc learning scenarios, that are independent from time and location. They adapt to learners and environments with a seamless and transparent transition between both worlds. The fusion will be demonstrated and verified by an exemplary prototype implementation.

Whilst the performance gap between main memory and secondary storage of computer systems increased rapidly during the last years, especially the analysis of secondary storage performance becomes very important. For that purpose this paper introduces a plugin-based framework providing an integrated execution environment for new benchmarks and offering analysis tools for the complex result output of particularly I/O measurements. As an example of this environment we describe the PRIOmark, an I/O benchmark that characterizes file system performance of single and distributed systems by means of two different file system interfaces. Additionally, the I/O performance of three file systems, two file system interfaces as well as different I/O workloads are compared to show the flexibility of the presented PRIOmark.

The concept of multidimensionality allows to specify contrary variants of a content object on a common, abstract level. This prevents redundancy, simplifies the maintenance and increases the adaptability of content. This is crucial for automated cross media delivery. Though some implementations of multidimensional document systems are available, existing formalisms do not yet cover this concept. This article presents the multidimensional extension of a document algebra, as well as a reference implementation of this algebra in an authoring tool. The algebraic approach is a valuable basis for interoperability of formats and tools in order to realize the whole content workflow in cross media publishing

Currently, there is no distributed data management system for computational grids that provides transparent data distribution and replication. This paper introduces three methods to enhance an algorithm for data distribution and replication from the field of peer-to-peer computing named "content-addressable network". They enable this algorithm to being a basis for a fully transparent distributed data management system for grids. The first enhancement provides multiple dataset queries which allow the user to search for all datasets matching a given combination of key and mask. Another optimization reduces existing query latencies by introducing a system of specifically selected short cuts. The third enhancement enables the algorithm to keep the amount of data stored on a certain node more equally balanced and as a result optimizes the algorithms stability while working with high data fill-levels

The paper describes an approach for the integration of transparent security mechanisms into de-centralized mobile application scenarios. This becomes necessary as the communication among various devices migrates to wireless technologies at a progressive rate, finally leading to pervasive computing scenarios. Our result is a modular and heterogeneous architecture based on a high-capacity middleware. In this regard, the Web services technology is a guarantor for modularity as well as flexibility. It allows the integration of special tasks applying high security and mobility on different layers. This paper describes basic technologies used in such a system as well as selected aspects of a realized prototype.

Nano-architectures are promising alternatives for current CMOS technology, which is facing serious challenges for further down-scaling. However, high failure rates - compared to the conventional CMOS process - lead to multiple faults during lifetime operation of nano-architectures. In this paper, we investigate the outcome of traditional fault-masking techniques in the presence of high fault probabilities. Redundant codes and circuit structures are evaluated in a generic way, using stochastic methods. The original goal was to provide a means to decide, under which conditions, which fault-masking techniques are worthwhile. Our results, however, suggest, that these techniques require extremely low fault rates and/or cause extraordinarily high additional cost.

Performance comparison of designated preprocessing white light interferometry algorithms on emerging multi- and many-core architectures

Parallel computing has been a niche for scientific research in academia for decades. However, as common industrial applications become more and more performance demanding and raising the clock frequency of conventional single-core systems is hardly an option due to reaching technological limitations, efficient use of multi-core CPUs has become imperative. 3D surface analysis of objects using the white light interferometry presents one of such computationally challenging applications. In this article three established preprocessing methods of white light interferometry data analysis are used to evaluate the suitability of three modern multi-core architectures - generic multi-core CPUs, GPGPUs and IBM's Cell BE. The results show that function offloading to GPGPUs, which offer independent memory and many hundreds of threads running in parallel, yields the highest performance compared to other systems. Furthermore, by outsourcing computational tasks to GPUs, the workload of other system resources, such as CPU or system memory, is reduced. This allows accelerated execution of other tasks, e.g. acquisition of images with higher frame rates.

Multi-messenger observations of gravitational waves and electromagnetic emission from compact object mergers offer unique insights into the structure of neutron stars, the formation of heavy elements, and the expansion rate of the Universe. With the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) gravitational-wave detectors currently in their fourth observing run (O4), it is an exciting time for detecting these mergers. However, assessing whether to follow up a candidate gravitational-wave event given limited telescope time and resources is challenging;the candidate can be a false alert due to detector glitches, or may not have any detectable electromagnetic counterpart even if it is real. GWSkyNet-Multi is a deep learning model developed to facilitate follow-up decisions by providing real-time classification of candidate events, using localization information released in LVK rapid public alerts. Here we introduce GWSkyNet-Multi II, an updated model targeted towards providing more robust and informative predictions during O4 and beyond. Specifically, the model now provides normalized probability scores and associated uncertainties for each of the four corresponding source categories released by the LVK: glitch, binary black hole, neutron star-black hole, and binary neutron star. Informed by explainability studies of the original model, the updated model architecture is also significantly simplified, including replacing input images with intuitive summary values, making it more interpretable. For significant O4 event alerts issued between May 2023 and December 2024, GWSkyNet-Multi II produces a prediction that is consistent with the updated LVK classification for 93% of events. To reduce production costs of current engines, car manufacturers strive to replace built-in sensors by software solutions. However, the limitations of current micro controllers require time and memory efficient algorithms. In this paper, we propose a real-time framework for the detection of engine valve states based on wavelet analysis of in-cylinder pressure curves. Extracted wavelet features are then filtered out using mutual information such that only the most relevant wavelet coefficients become the input of the chosen support vector regressor. A further speedup is achieved by an approximation of the support vector solution which comprises less support vectors. We show that the combination of relevant feature selection and the regressor model simplification results in a significant decrease of the recall phase complexity while retaining good generalization performance.
