Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is the current very fast and accurate modality for noninvasive assessment of 3D retinal structure. Due to large amount of data acquired with this technique the resolution of 3D scans is limited. In this paper we present a new method for improving resolution of 3D macula scans while maintaining short acquisition time and robustness with respect to motion artifacts. Our approach is based on multi-frame super-resolution method applied to several 3D standard resolution OCT scans. Presented experiments where performed on volumetric data acquired from adult patients with the use of Avanti RTvue device. Each OCT cross-section (B-scan) was subjected to image denoising and retinal layers segmentation. The generated 3D super-resolution scans have significantly improved quality of the vertical cross-sections.

Centrality is widely recognized as one of the most critical measures to provide insight in the structure and function of complex networks. While various centrality measures have been proposed for single-layer networks, a general framework for studying centrality in multilayer networks (i.e., multicentrality) is still lacking. In this study, a tensor-based framework is introduced to study eigenvector multicentrality, which enables the quantification of the impact of interlayer influence on multicentrality, providing a systematic way to describe how multicentrality propagates across different layers. This framework can leverage prior knowledge about the interplay among layers to better characterize multicentrality for varying scenarios. Two interesting cases are presented to illustrate how to model multilayer influence by choosing appropriate functions of interlayer influence and design algorithms to calculate eigenvector multicentrality. This framework is applied to analyze several empirical multilayer networks, and the results corroborate that it can quantify the influence among layers and multicentrality of nodes effectively. Optimizing the number of ad clicks is a large scale learning problem that is central to the multi-billion dollar mobile advertising industry. There are currently several optimization methods being used including ad mediation and ad positioning. In this paper, we propose a new method to optimize the mobile advertising. That is to use the ad refresh interval. We found out a new metric, which could be able to measure and compare the mobile advertising performance, taking into account the mobile time limitation. The result that we have achieved from this optimization study could maximize the revenue for mobile advertisers and publishers. This research has a very high applicability. It also lays out a solid background for future research in this promising area.

Context. Microlensing events provide a unique way to detect and measure the masses of isolated, non-luminous objects, particularly dark stellar remnants. Under certain conditions, it is possible to measure the mass of these objects using photometry alone, specifically when a microlensing light curve displays a finite-source (FS) effect. This effect generally occurs in highly magnified light curves, i.e. when the source and the lens are very well aligned. Aims. In this study, we analyse Gaia Alerts and Gaia Data Release 3 datasets, identifying four moderate-to-high-magnification microlensing events without a discernible FS effect. The absence of this effect suggests a large Einstein radius, implying substantial lens masses. Methods. In each event, we constrain the FS effect and therefore establish lower limits for angular Einstein radius and lens mass. Additionally, we use the DarkLensCode software to obtain mass, distance, and brightness distribution for the lens based on the Galactic model. Results. Our analysis established lower mass limits of ∼ 0.2 M☉ for one lens and ∼ 0.3 − 0.5 M☉ for two others. DarkLensCode analysis supports these findings, estimating lens masses in the range of∼ 0.42 − 1.66 M☉ and dark lens probabilities exceeding 60%. These results strongly indicate that the lenses are stellar remnants, such as white dwarfs or neutron stars. Conclusions. While further investigations are required to confirm the nature of these lenses, we demonstrate a straightforward yet effective approach to identifying stellar remnant candidates. © 2025, CC BY.

Biophotonics is an emerging multidisciplinary research area, embracing all light-based technologies applied to the life sciences and medicine [1-6]. The expression itself is the combination of the Greek syllables ＂bios＂ standing for life and ＂phos＂ standing for light. Photonics is the technical term for all methodologies and technologies utilizing photons over the whole spectrum from X-ray over the ultraviolet, visible and the infrared to the terahertz region, and its interaction with any matter. Beyond this definition, biophotonics is a scientific discipline of remarkable societal importance. As a part of photonics, it has proved to be an important enabling technology for accelerated progress in medicine and biotechnology. It can do so, because it originated at the interface of the most innovative academic disciplines of the last century, i.e., photonics, biotechnology and nanotechnologies. This field of research brings together scientists from different professions, such as physicists, biologists, pharmacists, medical doctors, etc. To work on common projects, they need to understand the ideas and the techniques of their counterparts.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment globally. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. We aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic;characterise the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic;and examine expectations for future health spending and put into context the expected need for investment in pandemic preparedness. Methods: In this analysis of global health spending between 1990 and 2021, and prediction from 2021 to 2026, we estimated four sources of health spending: development assistance for health (DAH), government spending, out-of-pocket spending, and prepaid private spending across 204 countries and territories. We used the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s Creditor Reporting System (CRS) and the WHO Global Health Expenditure Database (GHED) to estimate spending. We estimated development assistance for general health, COVID-19 response, and pandemic preparedness and response using a keyword search. Health spending estimates were combined with estimates of resources needed for pandemic prevention and preparedness to analyse future health spending patterns, relative to need. Findings: In 2019, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, US$9·2 trillion (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 9·1–9·3) was spent on health worldwide. We found great disparities in the amount of resources devoted to health, with high-income countries spending $7·3 trillion (95% UI 7·2–7·4) in 2019;293·7 times the $24·8 billion (95% UI 24·3–25·3) spent by low-income countries in 2019. The evolution of populations is influenced by many factors, and the simple classical models have been developed in a number of important ways. Both population structure and multiplayer interactions have been shown to significantly affect the evolution of important properties, such as the level of cooperation or of aggressive behavior. Here we combine these two key factors and develop the evolutionary dynamics of general group interactions in structured populations represented by regular graphs. The traditional linear and threshold public goods games are adopted as models to address the dynamics. We show that for linear group interactions, population structure can favor the evolution of cooperation compared to the well-mixed case, and we see that the more neighbors there are, the harder it is for cooperators to persist in structured populations. We further show that threshold group interactions could lead to the emergence of cooperation even in well-mixed populations. Here population structure sometimes inhibits cooperation for the threshold public goods game, where depending on the benefit to cost ratio, the outcomes are bistability or a monomorphic population of defectors or cooperators. Our results suggest, counterintuitively, that structured populations are not always beneficial for the evolution of cooperation for nonlinear group interactions.

The article presents an approach where the visual odometry from the stereo camera is fused with the inertial measurements using an error-state extended Kalman filter. A simplified strapdown inertial mechanization is used to predict the orientation and position of the user while the measurements of the visual odometry are employed to reduce the fast position drift of a pure inertial approach. Within the work the relative orientation and position measurements are considered as a generalized displacement represented as a dual quaternion. Using the framework of stochastic cloning both the rotation and translation measurements are incorporated in a statistically consistent way including a proper treatment of the uncertainties of the previous estimates. An enhanced performance compared to classical dynamical models is obtained for a basic sensor hardware setup and demonstrated for several typical experimental data sets. The described sensor system is completely self-contained and can be used standalone for indoor or combined indoor/outdoor scenarios as well as in hybrid positioning systems.

This paper deals with switching controller design that includes several linear time-invariant (LTI) controllers-all of them capable of stabilizing a specific LTI plant-in such a way that the H∞control performance of the closed-loop system is guaranteed for any switching sequence.
