Synchrophasor technology is considered as a main enabler for the envisioned Smart Grid at the transmission level. Despite some preliminary field test results reported from China Southern Grid, the majority of the synchrophasor applications are still in the engineering or advanced laboratory tests phases. One possible impedance of any real-life adoption of such applicationsis a lack of test platforms that are able to verify the proposed application paradigms in cost efficient manners, and also to demonstrate the interactions between the power system and the supporting ICT systems with sufficient details. In this paper, we report on the continuing research efforts targeting at developing a test platform for the development of the synchrophasor based applications. The platform incorporates a virtual Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU), a real-time simulator for power systems, a real-time simulator for communication networks, and an implementation of an open-source Phasor Data Concentrator. Specifically, this article focuses on the implementation and verification of the virtual PMU, and on the extension of its functionality to incorporate communication over UDP.

PMU-based Wide Area Monitoring and control (WAMC) system is introduced to improve the monitoring of power grid across large geographic areas and control the grid using more efficient and smart applications. The performance of WAMC applications in real power system scenarios and impact of their supporting Information and Communication technology (ICT) on the data quality can be quantified and analyzed by pseudo-real co-simulation test beds. The purpose of this study is to propose and develop a WAMC testing platform to facilitate the real-time simulation of dynamic power grid, the ICT infrastructure that overlays the grid and WAMS applications. The platform consists of OPNET, a powerful communication network emulator, connected to a real-time power system simulator through virtualized PMU device. The end point stations such as Phasor Data Concentrator or PMU-based applications are also linked to the platform through OPNET's real-simulation gateway called SITL (System-In-The-Loop). To assess the performance of the platform architecture, a case study has been performed with five PMUs which collect the data from a power model and deliver to PMU-based mode-estimation application over a typical communication network. In this study, the results explicitly intend to quantify the effect of network protocols on data delay.

The study of complex networks and collective dynamics occurring in biological, social and technical systems has experienced a massive surge of interest both from academia and industry. Many of the results on the mechanisms underlying the self-organized formation of complex dynamic networks in natural and man-made systems have been derived based on a statistical physics perspective. In this tutorial, we provide a basic introduction to this perspective which will help attendees to benefit from the vast literature on self-organization and self-adaptation phenomena available in the fields of network science and complex systems. We cover basic models and abstractions for the study of static complex networks as well as dynamical processes like, e.g., information diffusion, random walks, synchronization or the propagation of cascading failures. We further introduce recent advances in the study of dynamic (social) networks and demonstrate how the resulting methods can be practically applied in the engineering of self-organizing and self-adaptive distributed systems and protocols.

The main objective of this work is to develop the classification application for a new promising method for meat characterization getting information about the state of the vacuum packed meat in supermarket. A supervised training using neural networks and according to the back error propagation method is used. The training ensure a classification with high precision and with ability to answer correctly the inputs then with ability to classify the erroneous inputs which do not exist in the data base, without creating new classes. Method classification consist to classify the model parameters of the physical model of the meat according to a data base including the model's parameters for different beef muscle in different days.

The work demonstrates the fusion of the position and the orientation information from Visual Odometry (VO) with the orientation information obtained from low-cost inertial and magnetic sensors. The proposed approach is based on the stochastic cloning (SC) Kalman filter formulation which is able to incorporate independent incremental measurements in a statistically consistent way. The algorithm was tested on realistic trajectories and compared to the results of a pure VO as well as to those of a decoupled system. A drift in the heading estimation is addressed by incorporating the Earth's magnetic field measurements with associated heuristics for more robust disturbance detection.

Wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs) combine a large number of sensor nodes and a lower number of actuator nodes that are connected with wireless medium, providing distributed sensing and executing appropriate tasks to the events monitored in a special region of interest. The design of coordination mechanisms among nodes is considered in this paper. First, we formulate the mathematical models for WSANs system. Then, a strategy is proposed to assign proper tasks to actuators based on the characteristics of current events. Finally, according to system requirements, a distributed PID neural network control scheme is adopted to take coordinated actions of actuators on the given tasks. The simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

Timely and synchronized phasor data at high resolutions holds a great promise for more responsible and advanced power grid operations. It is expected that the combined effort of developing new application paradigms and the supporting Information and Communication technology (ICT) will enable the evolutionary change for future transmission grid operation. This paper addresses the design of the supporting ICT system for Wide-Area Monitoring and control applications considering system performance. The major contribution that distinguishes this paper from previous research efforts in the same area is that this study quantifies the end-to-end data delay and the received packet rate with considerations of different levels of data concentrations. The analysis performed in this paper is not merely limited to the performance issues caused by communication networks but also provides means to view and analyze the overall data delay of the entire supporting ICT system. © 2012 IEEE.
