The paper considers the convergence problem for a two input affine nonholonomic driftless system with three-dimensional state. The problem is solved using time-invariant static-state feedback and polar transformation which is singular at the origin. The given solution, in general, is local, and the feasible domain is dependent on the properties of the control system. Theoretical considerations are illustrated for the particular system and the results of numerical simulations are presented.

In this article the text-independent speaker verification problem is considered. In the presented system each conversation side is represented as a vector lying on the unit hypersphere. These vectors are compared by an inner product which produces similarity scores. In this article classical score normalization methods (z-norm and t-norm) are analyzed and compared with the support vector machines (SVMs). Next, the simplified support vector machine algorithm is proposed with the advantage of speed. All presented methods are experimentally evaluated as a part of the multi-level speaker verification system.

In this article a text-independent speaker verification problem is considered. After the feature extraction, each conversation side has been represented as a vector in a fixed dimensional space. In order to reduce an influence of the lengths of utterances and also the channel properties, various vector normalization techniques have been selected from the literature, modified, and tested. Additionally, it is shown that if the vectors are transformed in such a way that they lie on the unit hypersphere, better numerical properties of the respective kernel matrices can be achieved. Finally, various normalization methods as well for continuous features (i.e., the cosine kernel, the variance normalization, the cosine similarity merged with the variance normalization, and the variance normalization merged with the spherical normalization) as for the discrete features (again the cosine kernel, the TFLOG, the TFLOG merged with the cosine similarity metric, and the TFLOG merged with the spherical normalization) are tested and compared in this article.

One of the main tasks of monitoring service operators is the video data inspection in order to search for interesting events. Assuming a CCTV system equipped with a motorized camera operating in a pan cycle (a quite typical situation), we propose a new visualization and event search method consisting: first, in generation of a cylindrical (panorama) scene model, and second, in creation of video sequences containing the selected panorama parts for a convenient automatic and/or manual video analysis.

The paper presents a comparison of speaker models used for fast speaker identification in short recordings of telephone conversations. The knowledge of the encoder type used during the transmission of speech allows to apply a model that takes specific characteristics of the encoder into account. This improves efficiency of the speaker recognition process. The influence of the following GSM encoders was tested: FR, HR, EFR and AMR. During the experimental research we used our database of short voice phrases that usually occur during emergency calls. This paper is based on our studies related to techniques for the GSM encoding detection and to algorithms for removing silence in the voice recordings.

This paper is focused on a comparison between Model-Free control and Active Disturbance Rejection control methods. These two techniques do not require a detailed mathematical description of the system, since they base on the on-line estimation and rejection of the unmodeled elements of the dynamics. Robustness of the closed-loop control system (against external perturbation) and its relation to energy consumption is discussed here. A model of a planar manipulator is used in the conducted case study as an exemplary plant. Conclusions are supported with results obtained with numerical simulations.

Semantic web technologies are a key enabler for future information systems. The concept of Linked Data allows flexible inter-organizational collaboration and dynamic data integration. It surpasses the limitations of prevalent relational databases and proprietary access technologies. RFID, on the other hand, has been successfully applied to integrate physical artifacts into complex information systems. It allows the identification of artifacts by a unique identifier leveraging concepts such as the Internet of Things. Using the existing RFID ecosystem as universal entry point to Linked Data clouds makes it possible to connect the semantic description of the real world with the physical artifacts within this world. This provides new ways of merging and exploring real and virtual content. This paper presents an approach for using RFID as universal entry point to Linked Data clouds for task-driven and context-aware mobile support systems.

In the paper the results of investigations indicating computational efficiency of Discrete Trigonometric Transforms (DTTs) used to design filters by means of the complete wavelet-like decomposition/reconstruction procedure, are presented. The study indicates flexibility when comparing DTT selection from the set of 16 transforms, and the sampling type used. The results, obtained for the block length up to N=1024, should encourage applications of the suggested solutions to all areas where the classical wavelet filters are utilized, while the reconstruction error at the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) level of 37.5 dB can be accepted to balance the benefit of reduction of computations up to 68 times, obtained after including the Hamming window in the filtering process. The comparisons are based on the error measure derived from the signal covariance matrix.

This paper represents using Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) in order to support undergraduate control engineering students for learning nonlinear systems and control applications. CBR is an experience-based problem solving methodology; thus, it is used for helping control engineering students to design conventional PID controllers for nonlinear systems. For this purpose, GUNT pH neutralization process is used as the experimental setup and a GUI is designed for cased-based reasoning in MATLAB. It is observed that undergraduate students can learn and increase their experience on nonlinear systems using the proposed new CBR-GUI.

Timely and synchronized phasor data at high resolutions holds a great promise for more responsible and advanced power grid operations. It is expected that the combined effort of developing new application paradigms and the supporting Information and Communication technology (ICT) will enable the evolutionary change for future transmission grid operation. This paper addresses the design of the supporting ICT system for Wide-Area Monitoring and control applications considering system performance. The major contribution that distinguishes this paper from previous research efforts in the same area is that this study quantifies the end-to-end data delay and the received packet rate with considerations of different levels of data concentrations. The analysis performed in this paper is not merely limited to the performance issues caused by communication networks but also provides means to view and analyze the overall data delay of the entire supporting ICT system.
