For various applications, information models described in standards are available to enable a digital data exchange. For modular process plants, where different domains are interacting in different phases of the plant lifecycle, single, existing standards are not *** this work, we analyze the most relevant standards for process engineering, namely OntoCAPE, DEXPI, and IEC 61512, in regards to their application to support the lifecycle of modular process plants, which are described in the VDI 2776 and VDI/VDE/NAMUR 2658 standards. By challenging the standards with competency questions derived from a specific use case, we discuss which information models are most suitable for all individual domains in each lifecycle phase. The result is the specification of parts of these standards which are needed to create a fully digital support for modular process plants on the example of the introduced use case.

A control method for small domestic power plants using renewable energy is described in this paper. This method is not only capable of optimizing the working point of the plant but also implements active power factor correction and lowers the extant harmonic distortion in the line. The novel element in the proposed complex controller structure is the upper harmonic controller that minimizes the amplitudes of the 3rd, 5th 7th, 9th, and the 11th upper harmonic component in the output voltage. The proposed controller has been investigated by simulation in Matlab environment, and as a result, substantial improvement of the output voltage and current waveform could be achieved. Robustness of the method against nonlinear loads has also been tested. 0 © 2010 IEEE.

Mobile apps are a success story for mobile devices, particularly in the consumer sector. Tailored to a specific task, they offer optimal usability for a defined class of devices. However, today's apps are neither designed to collaborate with complex workflows nor to support these. To overcome this limitation, we developed the concept of Mobile App Orchestration. This pragmatic model driven software generation approach makes it possible to use mobile apps even in complex industrial workflows. We demonstrate the entire development process in a use case and explain solutions and challenges of our approach. An experimental evaluation of a manually conducted orchestration with 11 participants supports our design hypothesis that the proposed approach can deliver usable mobile support systems for Virtual Factories.

Production plants within manufacturing and process industries are becoming more and more complex systems. For a safe and demand sufficient production the automation system of a production plant is mission critical. Therefore the correct functioning and engineering of the automation system is essential. Nowadays the use of a virtual commissioning step before deploying the automation software on the real production plant is used more often. Within the virtual commissioning the automation software is tested against a virtual plant model, sufficient to check out the correct functioning of the automation system. Usually virtual commissioning is used as a step at the end of the automation engineering, as proposed by VDI 4499. Within this paper an integrated virtual commissioning is proposed, where the automation software is continuously tested against a virtual plant model during the overall engineering phase. The virtual plant is growing together with the automation software and thus enables simulation supported automation engineering. Benefits of the proposed workflow are that errors can be detected immediately after the implementation and the use of the virtual plant model could be extended to various stages of the engineering workflow.

Modern process plants are becoming more and more complex with high demands placed on design, engineering and operation. Throughout the life-cycle of process plants there is always the typical conflict involving costs, time and quality. One way of resolving this conflict is to employ simulation technology as it can be used to answer questions relating to engineering and operation earlier and with lower risks. In 2014, the authors conducted a global online survey investigating the current and future role of simulation within the life-cycle of a process plant. Based on the responses of more than 200 participants, fields of action and requirements have been drawn up to help reach the goal of continuously using simulation in the future. A first prototypical implementation towards concurrently using simulation within the life-cycle of a process plant is presented in this paper. This prototype uses tools for simulation, plant design and process automation that are available today and focuses on the engineering and operational phase of the life-cycle.

The problem of integrated design and control optimization of process plants is discussed in this paper, We consider it as a nonlinear programming problem subject to differential-algebraic constraints. This class of problems is frequently multimodal and "costly" (i.e., computationally expensive to evaluate). Thus, on the one hand, local optimization techniques usually fail to locate the global solution, and, on the second hand, most global optimization methods require many simulations of the model, resulting in unaffordable computation times. As an alternative, one may consider global optimization methods which employ surrogate-based approaches to reduce computation times and which require no knowledge of the underlying problem structure. A challenging wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) benchmark model1 is used here to evaluate the performance of these techniques. Numerical experiments with different optimization solvers indicate that the proposed benchmark optimization problem is indeed multimodal, and that via global optimization we can achieve an improvement of the controllers' performance compared to the best tuned controllers' settings available in the literature. Moreover, these results show that surrogate-based methods may reduce computation times while ensuring convergence to the best known solutions. © 2007 American Chemical Society.

Introduction: In radiotherapy, tumors may move due to the patient’s respiration, which decreases treatment accuracy. Some motion mitigation methods require measuring the tumor position during treatment. Current available sensors often suffer from time delays, which degrade the motion mitigation performance. However, the tumor motion is often periodic and continuous, which allows predicting the motion ahead. Method and Materials: A couch tracking system was simulated in MATLAB and five prediction filters selected from literature were implemented and tested on 51 respiration signals (median length: 103 s). The five filters were the linear filter (LF), the local regression (LOESS), the neural network (NN), the support vector regression (SVR), and the wavelet least mean squares (wLMS). The time delay to compensate was 320 ms. The normalized root mean square error (nRMSE) was calculated for all prediction filters and respiration signals. The correlation coefficients between the nRMSE of the prediction filters were computed. Results: The prediction filters were grouped into a low and a high nRMSE group. The low nRMSE group consisted of the LF, the NN, and the wLMS with a median nRMSE of 0.14, 0.15, and 0.14, respectively. The high nRMSE group consisted of the LOESS and the SVR with both a median nRMSE of 0.34. The correlations between the low nRMSE filters were above 0.87 and between the high nRMSE filters it was 0.64. Conclusion: The low nRMSE prediction filters not only have similar median nRMSEs but also similar nRMSEs for the same respiration signals as the high correlation shows. Therefore, good prediction filters perform similarly for identical respiration patterns, which might indicate a minimally achievable nRMSE for a given respiration pattern. © 2017 Alexander Jöhl et al., published by De Gruyter.

This paper discusses the application of modular and active learning concepts to courses in automation engineering for both vocational training and higher education. In the implemented concept, a course consists of several modular learning units that address different aspects of a single automation engineering process. To realize the complete cycle of activities every learning unit consists of a defined sequence of chapters, namely objectives, theoretical concepts, task definition, planning, and exemplary solution. The objective describes the contents so that the learner can decide if it matches his own objectives. Afterwards, theoretical concepts relevant to the objectives are presented to impart the basic knowledge. Now the definition of the tasks follows to realize the phase “recognition”. To combine the theory and the task the next part is planning to implement the phase “thinking”. Despite the fact that this phase is extremely important in the context of automation engineering, analysis of other course material and feedback from experienced trainers show that it is often skipped and is available only implicitly. By presenting one part of the solution the learner is led to a first solution. The presentation is done by structured step by step instructions so the learner can either follow every single item or only the main steps depending on his own level of knowledge. Eventually learners may evaluate a checklist to gain feedback which parts they managed and which ones they might want to repeat. After having finished the guided part successfully learners can switch to the exercises. Here they will get a task and need to plan their activities themselves. First evaluation results gained in a workshop with teachers support the hypothesis that the implemented concept is highly supportive.

Li-ion batteries are widely used in EV applications and are imposed to several aging effects during their lifetime. Since battery health cannot be measured directly, information about its health can be obtained by iteratively re-estimating the parameters of the model describing its dynamical behavior. The optimal design of experiments is investigated in this paper. The proposed method applies families of input signals (PRBS current and constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) signals) to the batteries to estimate the key aging factors. Simulation experiments have been used to analyze the statistical properties of the estimators as a function of the design parameters of the input signal families. The results show that the CC-CV charging-discharging cycle has the possibility to gain the most information out of the battery model parameter estimation. © 2018

A novel structure identification procedure for discrete event systems described by Petri nets are proposed in this paper for model-based diagnostic purposes that utilize the notions and tools of process mining. The identification of the structurally different discrete event system models describing a system in its normal and/or faulty modes was used for model-based isolation of the considered faulty modes. From the available process mining techniques that allow for the automatic construction of process models in Petri net form based on event logs, the genetic algorithm-based structure identification procedure has been found to be most capable of identifying the characteristic structural elements of the faulty models. The proposed procedures are illustrated on a simple example of an operated parking gate automaton with two faulty modes.
