Ammonia and urea contained in fertilizer plant wastewater are pollutants to the environment. High concentration of ammonium and urea in wastewater can affects algae blooms in the ecosystem which will generate various diseases in aquatic biota. It is known that there are many methods for degradation of ammonium and urea contained in fertilizer plant wastewater. One of the potential method is ultraviolet-enhanced ozonation. Ozonation is oxidation with O3 that generates hydroxyl radicals which subsequently react with organic contaminants, while UV irradiation can break down O3 molecules and produce radical ions OH. The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of the utilization of the ultraviolet-enhanced ozonation method in degradation of various initial ammonium (100-300 ppm) and urea concentration (100-300 ppm) in inlet feed of ozonation-UV irradiation combination system. Some important variables such as contact time (0-120 minutes) and ozone feed rate of 0.2, 0.6, and 1.21 g/h were evaluated. Degradation process was carried out in two steps;ozonation and UV irradiation. Ozonation process was carried out in a contacting tank at a constant feed flow rate of 1.5 l/min and at room temperature, while UV irradiation process was conducted in pipeline equipped with a UV lamp at various contact time. The ultraviolet-enhanced ozonation could degrade ammonium and urea nitrogen up to 83.6% and 63.8%, respectively, at ozone feed rate 1,21 g/h, contacting time 60 and 120 min, initial feed concentration of ammonia (100 ppm) and urea (40 ppm). © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Indonesia is one among countries that produce abundant of rice straw every year generated as post-harvesting residue from paddy field all over country. This abundant amount residue is highly potential to be utilized as carbon source in producing single cell protein (SCP) in solid state fermentation system. SCP is a microbial protein that can be used as alternative protein for substitution of available conventional protein sources such as;fish meal, soy bean, and corn Stover for animal feed production. This research was conducted to evaluating the effects of initial medium pH of substrate (mixed rice straw pulp-urea), fermentation time and fermentation temperature on SCP production by Trichoderma reesei in solid state fermentation (SSF). The results showed that the highest SCP yield (19.71%) was produced at the initial medium pH of 5 and temperature of 30 °C at SSF conditions of C/N ratio 20:1 for 12 days of fermentation time. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The critical minerals industries in Indonesia may pose possible environmental and human health risks due to the release of pollutants into soil, water, and air, as well as the use of materials and energy. This study investigates the possible environmental and human health impacts of Indonesia's nickel, gold, copper, tin, and bauxite mining and processing industries. This study utilizes the latest version of the OpenLCA software, version 2.0, in combination with the Ecoinvent 3.8 database. To evaluate potential environmental consequences and health effects on humans, CML-IA Baseline and Environmental Priority Strategies (EPS) are employed in product development. The EPS system was developed utilizing a hierarchical methodology with the objective of furnishing the product developer with data regarding the financial impact of human health impairment resulting from a particular product development. The production of one tonne of gold, nickel, bauxite, tin, and copper results in the emission of 7.34.E+07, 4.61.E+04, 3.10.E+04, 1.02.E+04, 8.01.E+03 kg CO₂ eq/t, respectively, contributing to global warming. This production is associated with asthma cases of 7.79.E+01 (gold industry), 2.21.E−03 (copper industry), 1.81.E−03 (tin industry), 9.21.E−04 (nickel industry), and 4.71.E−06 (bauxite industry) Personyears/t. Electricity consumption and the release of carbon dioxide are the main factors contributing to global warming. The primary cause of asthma cases is the utilization of fuel oil and electricity. Power plant chimneys can employ various technologies, such as cyclones, bag filters, and scrubbers, to mitigate the release of polluting gas emissions. The critical mineral industry must prioritize handling and governing of steam power facilities to minimize their negative effects on the environment and human health. © 2024 The Authors

We report the direct evidence of impacts of the Coulomb interaction in a prototypical Weyl semimetal, MoTe2, that alter its bare bands in a wide range of energy and momentum. Our quasiparticle interference patterns measured using scanning tunneling microscopy are shown to match the joint density of states of quasiparticle energy bands including momentum-dependent self-energy corrections, while electronic energy bands based on the other simpler local approximations of the Coulomb interaction fail to explain neither the correct number of quasiparticle pockets nor the shape of their dispersions observed in our spectrum. With this, we predict a transition between type-I and type-II Weyl fermions with doping and resolve its disparate quantum oscillation experiments, thus highlighting the critical roles of Coulomb interactions in layered Weyl semimetals.

Quantum tunneling phenomenon allows a high-barrier reaction to occur even though thermal energy is not sufficient to surmount the barrier. The phenomenon has been suggested to exist in the isomerization of methylhydroxycarbene which occured at 11 K. Here we study the quantum tunneling that occured in the isomerization of methylhydroxycarbene to acetaldehyde and to vinyl alcohol based on density functional calculations. The isomerization pathways are determined under the effect of various solvents which are modeled by polarizable continuum model (PCM). We use Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation to calculate the tunneling probability (T) and extend the usefulness of T into isomerization rate. The results show that the solvents give a significant effect on the isomerization rate of methylhydroxycarbene to acetaldehyde but an insignificant one on the isomerization rate to vinyl alcohol. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd. Single cell protein production by a local Aspergillus niger in solid state fermentation using rice straw pulp as carbon source: effects of fermentation variables

In this study, solid-state fermentation was carried out to produce single cell protein by local Aspergillus niger. Rice straw pulp produced from the pretreatment by liquid hot water at temperature 121 °C for 60 minutes of cooking time was used as carbon source. The effects of nitrogen sources, initial medium pH, C/N ratios of substrates and fermentation time on SCP production were evaluated in these experiments. The single cell protein was measured as crude protein content in the fermentation product by the Kjeldahl analysis method. The maximum crude protein of 18.9 % (w/w) contained in the fermentation product occurred at the fermentation condition with C/N ratio 30:1, the initial medium pH 4, temperature 30 °C, moisture content 75 % and relative humidity 95 %.
