Waste generation from food manufacturing facilities poses a serious hazard like environmental degradation, water pollution, and land pollution due to its high nutrient composition. Specifically, solid waste(powder) disposal requires additional energy sources in terms of scientific treatment, structured collection, and disposal packaging according to the safety regulation. Thus, this research discusses the viewpoint of integrating food processing waste as an organic carbon source with BG-11 medium for Chlorella vulgaris(FSP-E) growth. The food processing waste powders investigated in this study were obtained from milk, and biscuit manufacturing facilities. The culture medium was modified by combining both BG-11 and food processing waste powders to identify the optimal algal growth and biochemical *** to the microalgae grown in BG-11 alone(IBG), the combination of biscuit waste and IBG produced higher biomass concentration(44%), with increased lipid(11%), protein(20%), and carbohydrate(57%) contents. Chlorella vulgaris was able to uptake nutrients from the culture medium with combination of food processing waste and IBG thus enhancing its growth. The results obtained also indicate that an integrated culture system using food processing waste and synthetic sources can generate energy out of waste by improving the bio-composition of the microalgae biomass.

The increasing demand for sustainable materials has highlighted nanocellulose as a promising candidate due to its exceptional mechanical strength, thermal stability, and superior barrier properties. These attributes enable its application in diverse fields, including packaging, biomedical devices, and nanocomposites. This study investigates the valorization of edamame bean husks, a byproduct of the globally consumed legume snack, as a sustainable feedstock for nanocellulose production. Cellulose was extracted from the husks via delignification and bleaching, followed by a green and facile acid hydrolysis method employing organic acids (maleic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, and formic acid) to produce nanocellulose. The resulting nanocellulose exhibited a fibrillar morphology with particle sizes ranging from 7.59 to 17.51 nm, depending on the acid used. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a crystallinity index ranging from 63.49 % to 67.24 %. Notably, acid hydrolysis significantly enhanced the thermal stability of the nanocellulose compared to both the raw husk and isolated cellulose. These findings demonstrate the potential of edamame agricultural waste as a valuable resource for sustainable and eco-friendly nanocellulose production, contributing to a circular bioeconomy. © 2025 The Authors

Utilization of sugarcane bagasse and banana midrib mixture as raw materials for paper making using acetosolve method

Paper making requires raw materials with high cellulose and hemicellulose content. The alternative materials that can be used in the paper making are sugarcane bagasse and banana midrib. The paper production method used in this study is acetosolve which involves acetic acid as an organic solvent. The objectives of this research are to figure out the acetic acid concentration in delignification process and the ratio between sugarcane bagasse and banana midrib that produce pulp with the highest yield, cellulose and kappa number. In this research, there are some variables, the first is the levels of acetic acid concentration in delignification process, which are 70%, 75%, 80%, 85%, 90%, the second is the ratio between sugarcane bagasse and banana midrib, which are 20:0, 18:2, 16:4, 14:6, 12:8, 10:10. The results show that the best pulping conditions are found to be 80% acetic acid concentration with 12:8 (w/w) ratio between sugarcane bagasse and banana midrib, and also 1:20 (w/v) ratio between raw material and solution of acetic acid at two hours cooking duration. The highest yield of pulp in acetosolve process was 63.1%, and its characteristics are 84.67% of cellulose and 10.44 kappa number.

One area that is developing in Indonesia is in the area of textile industry. These industries absorb a lot of labor and contribute to the country's foreign exchange but have a negative impact in the form of wastewater produced. The wastewater produced generally contains synthetic dyes such as Reactive Red 2 (RR2). This synthetic coloring material will pollute the environment if it is not well treated first before being discharged into the environment. In this study, RR2 will be used as a pollutant model. RR2 will be treated by several methods. Pollutant concentration is an important parameter in determining the most appropriate treatment method. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of RR2 initial concentration on reducing COD and color using Fenton, Fenton/TiO2, Fenton/UV, and Fenton/TiO2/UV methods. RR2 concentration was varied between 150-300 ppm. As the results, RR2 concentration from 150-300 ppm does not significantly affect the percentage of color degradation. However, at high concentration of 250 and 300 ppm, the percentage of COD degradation decrease by increasing concentration of RR2. When using 150 ppm of RR2, the highest COD and color degradation of 98.8 % and 89.5 %, respectively were achieved by using the Fenton/TiO2/UV methods.

High performance polysulfone (PSf) membrane has been prepared for treating of batik palembang wastewater. Many investigations attempted the use of polysulfone (PSf) membranes to filtrate dilute contaminant in textile wastewater. The matrix membrane is a mixture of PSf which is produced by adding inorganic materials to obtain a polymer that functions to manufacture the membrane by increasing hydrophilicity and impurity resistance. MMM were fabricated from a dope solution containing PSf/LiCl/DMF at different additives composition. Antifouling properties of membranes could be enhance with 0.0 - 10 wt.% LiCl that has been added into dope solution. Pure water permeation flux analysis (PWP), AFM and FESEM. From the results of research on FESEM, the PSf / LiCL membrane showed a fairly symmetrical cross-sectional structure containing two layers. The layers of the tiny finger-like structure on the edge of the perforated fibers and the holes like the larger fingers are mixed with the macrovoid layer in the middle section. PWP flux is not proportional to mean rough outer surface but higher water permeation. Therefore, PSf/LiCl exhibited a better performance that resulted a much lower fouling tendency than the naked membrane in batik Palembang wastewater treatment.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) has important role in the successful of energy transition and reducing dependency from fossil fuels. Indonesia has started to develop EVs. One of the challenges is charging infrastructure development, includes business model and pricing scheme to achieve business feasibility. This study analyses business model and pricing mechanism for public charging station in Indonesia where a case study is conducted in Jabodetabek area. Monte-Carlo method is used to estimate charging demand based on current travel data and estimated EVs population in 2025. Cash flow method is used to calculate feasible price for public charging with Fixed and ToU price schemes. EVs home charging cost is also calculated to investigate competitiveness of public charging price for each business model. The results show that prices of public charging business model are competitive compared to cost of home charging. The proposed ToU price scheme for public charging is more competitive compared to fixed price scheme, and also effective to minimize grid load escalation of home charging during busy periods. Furthermore, daily cost of EV charging is calculated and compared to fuel cost of ICE vehicles. The result shows that EV charging cost is lower than fuel cost of ICE vehicles.

The aim of this study is to obtain an essential oil from Allium cepa L. var. aggregatum by the extraction process using the microwave hydrodiffusion-gravity method. The operating parameters are drying pre-treatment, material size, microwave power, and extraction time. The optimal parameter conditions were determined by screening the data using a full factorial design and subsequently optimizing the process using a face-centered central composite design. The oil yield initially increases with the extraction period and then reaches a plateau, showing no further increase. The moisture content reduction resulting from drying methods has a direct impact on the production of essential oils, leading to increased yields. The results show that the highest yield achieved is 2.78 percent, which occurs for a duration of 75 minutes, a power level of 600 W, and a material size of 1 cm. In addition, the onion oil extract also contains cyclohexanol, 5-methyl-2-(1-methylethenyl) and Z-sitral. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Economic analysis of biomass gasification for generating electricity in rural areas in Indonesia

The gaseous fuel from biomass gasification might reduce the consumption of diesel fuel by 70%. The investment cost of the whole unit with a capacity of 45 kWe was about IDR 220 million in 2008 comprised of 24% for gasification unit, 54% for diesel engine and electric generator, 22% for transportation of the whole unit from Bandung to the site in South Borneo. The gasification unit was made in local workshop in Bandung, while the diesel-generator was purchased also in a local market. To anticipate the development of biomass based electricity in remote areas, an economic analysis has been made for implementations in 2019. A specific investment cost of 600 USD/kW has been estimated taking account to the escalation and capacity factors. Using a discounted factor of 11% and biomass cost in the range of 0.03-0.07 USD/kg, the production cost of electricity would be in the range of 0.09-0.16 USD/kWh. This production cost was lower than that of diesel engine fueled with full oil commonly implemented in many remote areas in Indonesia at this moment. This production cost was also lower than the Feed in Tariff in some regions established by Indonesian government in 2017.

The main environmental problem in the textile industry is the waste from the dyeing process. Heavy dye and heavy metals are water pollutants. The most widely used method in water treatment is filtration using membrane technology. Membrane technology has several advantages, such as separation process that can occur at room temperature and its use is not destructive. In this research will be made membrane with basic forming material such as bentonite, clay (clay), activated carbon as additive in filtration process. The activated carbon used is made from avocado seed which is carbonized with a temperature of 500°C for 1 hour. This research is used to know the influence of flow rate and the best time of contact with ceramic membrane during the treatment of songket wastewater and to know the result of ceramic membrane use with different type of active carbon raw material to the treatment of songket liquid waste which can fulfill the condition of the waste water ready dispose of by water quality standard. Parameters examined TSS, BOD, COD, PH, and turbidity. The contact time used during the filtration process is 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes and 150 minutes. As for the flow rate used 3L / min and 5L / min. From the result of the research, it is known that the best result of waste samples with 150 minutes contact time and 3L / min flow rate.

This study investigates the impact of feature selection results using the filter method on the performance of predictive models for the nutritional status of children aged 0-23 months. This study aimed to understand how correlation-based feature selection methods affect the efficiency and accuracy of predictive models. The dataset comes from the Basic Health Research survey, which consists of 84 variables and around 130,000 data, including anthropometric, family, socioeconomic, and environmental information. In this study, various filter-based feature selection methods were applied to evaluate and identify features that have significant relationships with children’s nutritional status, both linearly and non-linearly. The mutual information method was used to identify complex relationships between features and target variables, while the Pearson Correlation Coefficient and information gain were used to assess the relevance of numerical and categorical features. Of the 84 variables in the dataset, 37 features were selected after the selection process. The model performance evaluation was carried out using the Random Forest (RF) and Gradient Boosting (GB) algorithms, by comparing the results between the dataset that had been selected and without feature selection. The RF model without feature selection produces accuracy: 0,84600, precision: 0,83958, recall: 0,84600, F1-score: 0,78962, and a computation time of 9 seconds. The GB model without feature selection produces accuracy: 0,86330, precision: 0,84722, recall: 0,86330, F1-score: 0,84925, and a computation time of 2 minutes 50 seconds. After feature selection and cross-validation, the RF model shows accuracy: 0,85701, precision: 0,83599, recall: 0,85701, and F1 score: 0,83484. The GB model shows accuracy at 0,86124, precision at 0,84226, recall at 0,86130, and F1 score at 0,84120.
