Microplastics in aquatic environment can possibly enter into the aquatic organism, so this study aims to identify the microplastic concentrations in water, sediment, and milkfish. The samples are taken in downstream Citarum river at Muara Gembong. Water samples were taken using a manta trawl pulled by a boat while sediment and milkfish samples were taken using the grab sampling method. Organic removal and cleaning was conducted by using the Fenton Oxidation method which use Fe and H2O2. The average of microplastic concentrations in river water, seawater ponds, mixed water, and seawater consecutively are 0.0574 ± 0.025 particles/m3, 3.000 ± 2.645 particles/L, 0.666 ± 0.577 particles/L and 1.333 ± 1.155 particles/L. The average of microplastic concentrations in sediment sea water pond, sediment mixed water pond and sea sediment samples consecutively are 3.666 ± 0.577 particles/20g, 2.667 ± 1.527 particles/20g, 2.333 ± 0.577 particles/20g and 0.667 ± 1.154 particle/20g. The average of microplastic concentrations in the gut and gills of milkfish in sea ponds and mixed ponds consecutively are 2.333 ± 2.266 particles/fish and 2.222 ± 3.768 particles/fish. The average of microplastic concentrations in milkfish tissues in the sea and mixed water ponds are 1.333 ± 1.000 particles/fish and 1.111 ± 1.167 particles/fish. © 2020 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

Background: This study presents a composite solid fuel upgrading strategy by blending torrefied spent coffee grounds (TS) into waste starch (WS) at the weight ratios of 0 wt%, 5 wt%, 20 wt%, and 35 wt%. When the blending ratio of TS exceeds 35 wt%, TS-WS composite fuel fails to pelletize. Blending TS in WS contributes to the higher heating value (HHV) and carbon content. Methods: The Taguchi method is utilized to identify the optimal torrefaction conditions for HHV of TS. The highest HHV of TS at 300°C (300-TSCG) is 31.76 MJ∙kg−1, which is about 2.08 times that of WS. The carbon content, HHV, ignition temperature, and combustion reactivity of 35%TS-WS composite fuel are 51.15 wt%, 21.06 MJ∙kg−1, 262°C, and 4.6 wt%∙min-1∙°C−1, respectively. Attenuated total reflectance spectrometer, contact angle, hygroscopicity, mildew observation, storability, and water activity of TS-WS composite fuel are analyzed, and the storability of TS-WS composite fuel is discussed. Significant findings: Compared with 0%TS-WS, the HHV of 35% TS-WS increases 38%, while the carbon content increases by 34%. The mechanical strength of TS-WS decreases with the increase of TS blending amount. The strategy of blending TS and WS can significantly reduce the generation of WS and spent coffee grounds (SCGs) and upgrade the quality of composite solid fuel. Accordingly, TS-WS is a promising composite solid fuel that can approach sustainable production of biofuels without compromising commercial viability. © 2024 Taiwan Institute of chemical Engineers

Inter-regional electricity system’s long term planning. Case study of Jawa-Sumatera

This study assesses Jawa-Sumatera interregional electricity system’s long-term planning until 2050. The planning is determined based on least-cost optimization in the TIMES model. The model considers a high disparity between regions such as electricity demand, power generation infrastructure, and energy resources. There are twenty-seven technology power generations and three energy storage technologies competing in this model, the modeling also reviews the pattern of generating operations and the role of energy storage on an hourly for each region. A trading scenario was applied to plan power generation with interconnected transmission between Jawa-Sumatera by HVDC transmission. The results show power generation portfolio for BAU and the trading scenario in Jawa and Sumatra is dominated by a gas-based power plant. The trading scenario results in an increase of 70% installed capacity in Sumatera and a decrease of 23% installed capacity in Jawa, an average of 1.96 TWh of electricity is exported every hour to Jawa, a decrease in electricity production cost for Jawa from 10.69 cUSD/ kWh to 9.15 cUSD/kWh and Sumatera from 6.77 cUSD/kWh to 4.88 cUSD/kWh, an increase in renewable energy penetration especially utility-scale PV in Sumatera 19% and a reduction in emissions to 322 gCO2/kWh and required transmission capacity 43.6 GW in 2050 to distribute electricity from Sumatera to Jawa.

Coffee is one of the plantation crops that has long been a cultivated plant in Indonesia. The classification of coffee fruit maturity manually still has several weaknesses and requires a long process, has low accuracy and is inconsistent, this is because the determination is made subjectively by coffee farmers. As for the classification of coffee fruit maturity levels automatically, it can be faster with objective determination, therefore the use of image processing is relatively easier, faster, and based on a quantified descriptive assessment to determine coffee maturity. Image Processing is a method used to process or manipulate images in 2-dimensional form. In the classification process, there are many methods used to obtain classification of objects based on training data. One of the algorithms used for the classification process is K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN). KNN is a classification technique for objects based on training data that is the closest or has similar characteristics to the object. KNN includes supervised learning algorithms, where the results of the new query instance are classified based on the majority of the categories in K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN). The finding indicated that class classification of ripe and unripe were 88,24 % and 100% respectively with 93,33% accuracy level.

This research has studied the optical, morphological/textural and structural properties of pulverized TiO₂-CuO heterostructures and their immobilization on chemically purified beach sand granules to evaluate the potential of these materials for wastewater treatment. The preparation of TiO₂-CuO heterojunctions was developed by the ultrasound-assisted wet impregnation method in the presence of PEG-400. For this methodology, the TiO₂ and CuO nanoparticles were first synthesized by green chemistry using Moringa (Moringa Oleifera) leaves aqueous extract and an ultrasound bath. Then, the metal oxide nanoparticles were calcinated and immobilized on etched sand granules via immersion in a coating suspension. All materials were characterized by UV–Vis DRS, photoluminescence (PL), SEM-EDS, HRTEM-SAED, BET area, Raman spectroscopy, XRD and XPS. Optical characterization revealed that the CuO incorporation favors light adsorption in the visible spectrum and reduces the band gap energy from 3.14 to 1.28 eV. Morphological studies showed that the pulverized materials are agglomerated with an affinity for the high porosity regions of the beach sand granules. Also, TiO₂-CuO heterojunctions exhibited a broader size distribution (15.81 ± 7.45 nm) than pure TiO₂ nanoparticles (10.38 ± 1.24 nm). The structural analysis confirmed that the pure TiO₂ and CuO nanoparticles are formed exclusively in the anatase and tenorite phases. At the same time, the heterostructures’ process preparation favors the partial transition from CuO to Cu₂O. Finally, the purified sand support is mainly based on α-Quartz (trigonal);the as-prepared material is a potentially versatile and reusable candidate for pollutant photodegradation under UV or visible light sources. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Research on the Palu earthquake in the period of August to October 2018 has been carried out in the Palu Koro Fault (PKF) zone with a hypocenter of 5-20 km. This study aims to determine the fractal dimensions of these earthquakes based on the relationship between logarithmic frequency and earthquake magnitude correlation introduced by Gutenberg-Richter. Statistical correlation between logarithmic frequency and earthquake magnitude was calculated using the inversion approach. Based on the calculation results obtained fractal dimension value of 1.0378, which describes the seismicity pattern at a depth of 5-20 km. It indicates that the earthquakes triggered by the movement in rupture segments which seen as points along the PKF zone. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This article presents a study that analyzes open innovation and its contribution to technology transfer processes in universities, addressing as key questions: What elements or factors of open innovation contribute to the performance of technology transfer in universities? What could be the role of open innovation in the technology transfer process of universities? The study was conducted from a systematic literature review in the Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink databases on 95 peer-reviewed articles selected from the last 20 years. From an exploratory approach, the critical analysis of the state of knowledge permitted the identification of the 36 factors of open innovation contributing to the performance of technology transfer in universities, from knowledge management and innovation, resources, and capabilities, R&D management with universities, and the university-industry relationship. According to the findings and success cases, open innovation from the use of internal and external knowledge boosts R&D+i projects, encouraging universities to keep close relations with actors from regional innovation systems, contributing positively to the performance of technology transfer in institutions and stimulating the commercialization of the developments generated from research. In the future, we propose delving into outbound open innovation, its systematization, contribution, and impact on university technology transfer processes. © 2023 The Authors

Lighting the way: Enhancing telephone notification with DC lamps in noisy settings

This study aims to develop a device that uses DC lamps as a notification of a telephone ringing in a noisy room. The research method involves observing the Cikande electronic ambassador shop and proposing the use of a DC lamp as a replacement for the speaker output of the telephone. The device includes a PNP transistor type as an amplifier and multiple LEDs to ensure visibility in a noisy environment. The result is a functional device that uses DC lamps to notify the ringing of a telephone in a noisy room. The implication of this research is that it provides a solution for situations where conventional ringing tones from telephones are not audible due to noise pollution. The device can be useful in various settings, including busy offices, factories, and public spaces.
