Abstract Performance monitoring of model predictive controlsystems (MPC) has received a great interest from both academia and industry. In recent years some novel approaches for multivariate control performance monitoring have been developed without the requirement of process models or interactor matrices. Among them the prediction error approach has been shown to be a promising one, but it is k-step prediction based and may not be fully comparable with the MPC objective that is multi-step prediction based. This paper develops a multi-step prediction error approach for performance monitoring of model predictive controlsystems, and demonstrates its application in an industrial MPC performance monitoring and diagnosis problem.

A simple learning control approach for controlling a pH neutralization process has been developed in this paper. A one-step-ahead Q-learning, namely Q(λ)-learning, using a lookup table is developed and applied to a pH process: weak base - strong acid process. The objective of the controller is to maintain the pH within the goal state. The application at a laboratory pilot plant shows that the proposed Q(λ)-learning regulates the process well, even in the presence of reference changes.

Operation of the gun/turret system in a military tank is limited by several constraints some of which are posed by obstacles existing on the vehicle's own platform. These mechanical constraints acting as hard constraints can cause serious damage to the whole assembly if violated. A control strategy developed for such a system must avoid possible collision of the gun/turret system with these obstacles. We propose to use a MPC based control strategy, due to its inherent ability to handle constraints, for the deck clearance problem and evaluate its performance under operating conditions for a linear model of the tank. Matlab~R based MPCtoolbox is used to set up the MPC calculations for the gun/turret system. Simulations are performed to investigate and compare the performance of the controller under various deck constraint limits. It is shown that MPC is effective in addressing both the stabilization and deck clearance objectives.

It is the fact that several process parameters are either unknown or uncertain. Therefore, an optimal control, profile calculated with developed process models with respect to such process parameters may not give an optimal performance when implemented to real processes. This study proposes a batch-to-batch optimization strategy for the estimation of uncertain *** in a batch crystallization process of potassium sulfate production. The knowledge of a crystal size distribution of the product at the end of batch operation is used in the proposed methodology. The updated kinetic parameters are applied for determining an optimal operating temperature policy for the next batch run.

In this study, a reactive distillation column in which chemical reaction and separation occur simultaneously is applied for the synthesis of tert-amyl ethyl ether (TAEE) from ethanol (EtOH) and tert-amyl alcohol (TAA). Pervaporation, an efficient membrane separation technique, is integrated with the reactive distillation for enhancing the efficiency of TAEE production. A user-defined Fortran subroutine of a pervaporation unit is developed, allowing the design and simulation of the hybrid process of reactive distillation and pervaporation in Aspen Plus simulator. The performance of such a hybrid process is analyzed and the results indicate that the integration of the reactive distillation with the pervaporation increases the conversion of TAA and the purity of TAEE product, compared with the conventional reactive distillation.

Forecasting highly uncertain demand signals is an important component for successfully managing inventory. We present a control-relevant approach to the problem that tailors a forecasting model to its end-use purpose, which is to provide forecast signals to a tactical inventory management policy based on Model Predictive control (MPC). The success of the method hinges on a control-relevant prefiltering operation that emphasizes goodness-of-fit in the frequency band most important for achieving desired levels of closed-loop performance. A multi-objective formulation is presented that allows the supply chain planner to generate demand forecasts that minimize inventory deviation, starts change variance, or their weighted combination when incorporated in an MPC decision policy. The benefits obtained from this procedure are demonstrated on a case study where the estimated demand model is based on a AutoRegressive (AR) process.

This paper studies the trade-off between energy consumption and food quality loss, at varying ambient conditions, in supermarket refrigeration systems. Compared with the traditional operation with pressure control, a large potential for energy savings without extra loss of food quality is demonstrated. We also show that by utilizing the relatively slow dynamics of the food temperature, compared with the air temperature, we are able to further lower both the energy consumption and the peak value of power requirement. The Pareto optimal curve is found by off-line optimization.
