EFFECT OF NOZZLE FAN ANGLE ON SPRAYS IN GAS-SOLID RISER FLOW

A three-dimensional simulation study is performed for investigating the hydrodynamic behaviors of a cross-flow liquid nitrogen spray injected into an air-fluidized catalytic cracking （FCC） riser of rectangular cross-section. Rectangular nozzles with a fixed aspect ratio but different fan angles are used for the spray feeding. While our numerical simulation reveals a generic three-phase flow structure with strong three-phase interactions under rapid vaporization of sprays, this paper tends to focus on the study of the effect of nozzle fan angle on the spray coverage as well as vapor flux distribution by spray vaporization inside the riser flow. The gas-solid （air-FCC） flow is simulated using the multi-fluid method while the evaporating sprays （liquid nitrogen） are calculated using the Lagrangian trajectory method, with a strong two-way coupling between the Eulerian gas-solid flow and the Lagrangian trajectories of spray. Our simulation shows that the spray coverage is basically dominated by the spray fan angle. The spray fan angle has a very minor effect on spray penetration. The spray vaporization flux per unit area of spray coverage is highly non-linearly distributed along the spray penetration. The convection of gas-solid flow in a riser leads to a significant downward deviation of vapor generated by droplet vaporization, causing a strong recirculating wake region in the immediate downstream area of the spray.

A novel methodology that integrates a directional multisine input design procedure and control-relevant parameter estimation is developed in this paper, leading to desirable models for the control of highly interactive multivariable process systems. A priori information on system directionality is utilized in the input design procedure and recognized in the subsequent parameter estimation step, which consists of control-relevant curve fitting of frequency responses obtained from identification data. As a result, a systematic procedure for generating a control-relevant model with balanced gain directionality is developed, appropriate for highly interactive processes. A case study involving a binary distillation column and model predictive control is presented in this paper to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach

Efficient management of inventory in supply chains is critical to the profitable operation of modern enterprises. The supply/demand networks characteristic of discrete-parts industries such as semiconductor manufacturing represent highly stochastic, nonlinear, and constrained dynamical systems whose study merits a control-oriented approach. Model predictive control (MPC) is presented in this paper as the basis for a novel inventory management policy for supply chains whose dynamic behavior can be adequately represented by fluid analogies. A simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) optimization algorithm is presented as a means to obtain optimal tuning parameters for the proposed policies. The SPSA technique is capable of optimizing important system parameters, such as safety stock targets and/or controller tuning parameters. Two case studies are presented. The results of the optimization on a single-echelon system show that it is advantageous to act cautiously to forecasted information and gradually become more aggressive (with respect to factory starts) as more accurate demand information becomes available. For a three-echelon problem, the results of the optimization demonstrate that safety stock levels can be significantly reduced and financial benefit gained while maintaining robust operation in the supply chain

In this paper, we will state the new problem of system structures around degenerate critical points in the viewpoint of control engineering. Then, two fundamental schemes are presented to construct a weak Lyapunov function systematically. The procedures are based on the following deformations. One of them is a collapsing residual singularity defined by the formal local coordinate of Thom's splitting lemma. The other is a blowing-up for the resolution of singularity.

This paper presents an approach based on the use of the correspondence analysis (CA) algorithm for the task of fault detection and diagnosis. The CA algorithm analyzes the joint row-column association to represent the information content in the data matrix X. Decomposition of the information represented by this metric is shown to capture dynamic information more efficiently [1] and therefore yield superior performance from the viewpoints of data compression, discrimination and classification as well as early detection of faults. In this paper, we are discussing certain implementation issues, such as dimensional homogeneity, before correspondence analysis can be applied to any data set. We also demonstrate how these conditions can be met for the data sets obtained from an online plant. We demonstrate performance improvements over PCA and DPCA on the Tennessee Eastman problem, which is a representative benchmark problem used in the literature. CA is shown to yield vastly superior performance for the monitoring of the TE problem, when compared with PCA and DPCA.

There are well-known theoretical examples that show that stability constraints in nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) are necessary in order to guarantee closed loop stability. In this paper it is shown that these stability constraints, derived from theory, are also essential in practice. In particular, an experimental study is carried out on a four tank system that illustrates the stability behavior of NMPC.

This paper demonstrates how control systems engineering and risk management can be applied to problems in behavioral health through their application to the design and implementation of adaptive interventions. Adaptive interventions represent a promising approach to prevention and treatment of chronic, relapsing disorders, such as alcoholism, cigarette smoking, and drug abuse. The benefits of the proposed approach are presented in the development of risk-based model predictive control (MPC) algorithm for a hypothetical intervention inspired by two real-life programs: Fast Track, an intervention whose long-term goal is the prevention of conduct disorders in at-risk children, and Communities that Care, a risk-based prevention program for substance abuse. The tailoring or controlled variable of the adaptive intervention is a measure of parental functioning in the family of an at-risk child; the MPC-based algorithm decides on the appropriate frequency of counselor home visits, mentoring sessions, and the availability of after-school recreation activities by relying on a model that includes identifiable risks, their costs, and the cost/benefit assessment of mitigating actions. By systematically accounting for risks and adapting treatment components over time, an MPC approach as described in this paper has the potential to increase intervention potency and adherence while reducing waste, resulting in more effective interventions than conventional fixed treatment. MPC is particularly meaningful for the problem given some of its favorable properties, such as ease of constraint-handling, and its ability to scale to interventions involving multiple tailoring variables. Several simulations are conducted under conditions of varying disturbance magnitude to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm

A heuristic algorithm for multiple vehicles routing problem with stochastic demand is proposed and the goal is to minimize the total traveling cost. Two-phase method is adopted to deal with this problem. In the first phase, an algorithm is proposed to partition customers into clusters, and the main task of the second phase is to design an effective routing through each cluster of customers to minimize the total expected traveling cost. Both the a priori strategy and the reoptimization strategy are used to obtain the optimal routing. The experiment results indicate that this method can produce solutions of good quality and is an effective algorithm for the multiple vehicles routing problem with stochastic demand

In wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) equipped with sludge digestion and dewatering systems, the reject water originating from these facilities contributes significantly to the nitrogen load of the activated sludge tanks, to which it is typically recycled. In this paper, the impact of reject water streams on the performance of a WWTP is assessed in a simulation study, using the Benchmark Simulation Model no. 2 (BSM2), that includes the processes describing sludge treatment and in this way allows for plant-wide evaluation. Comparison of performance of a WWTP without reject water with a WWTP where reject water is recycled to the primary clarifier, i.e. the BSM2 plant, shows that the ammonium load of the influent to the primary clarifier is 28% higher in the case of reject water recycling. This results in violation of the effluent total nitrogen limit. In order to relieve the main wastewater treatment plant, reject water treatment with a combined SHARON-Anammox process seems a promising option. The simulation results indicate that significant improvements of the effluent quality of the main wastewater treatment plant can be realized. An economic evaluation of the different scenarios is performed using an Operating Cost Index (OCI). © IWA Publishing 2006.
