The Arizona State University, developed a curricula for teaching semiphysical modeling to its chemicalengineering students using a brine-water mixing tank experiment. The brine-water tank was used in the ECE 394 systems as an ongoing project to help students reconcile the abstraction of mathematical modeling with the realities of a practical system. The main objective of the experiment was to develop useful mathematical models of the tank behavior displaying good predictive ability, using principles and semiphysical modeling techniques. The results show that this experiment can serve as an important role in either an introductory process dynamics and control course or a senior-level unit operations laboratory.

The Plasma Arc Waste Destruction System (PAWDS) uses plasma energy, with temperatures over 5,000 degrees C, to rapidly and efficiently destroy combustible waste aboard ships. PAWDS has proven itself to be a viable alternative to traditional incinerators. >> In September 2003, Carnival Cruise Lines were the first to install a PAWDS aboard their 2,056 passenger (plus 1,000 crew members) capacity, M/S Fantasy cruise ship, to treat ship waste including paper, cardboard, plastics, textiles, wood, and food. As of June 2004, it is being operated and maintained solely by Carnival Cruise Lines personnel and has been permitted to operate in port by the Bahamian port authorities. >> The Navy's next generation aircraft carrier, CVN 21, will be equipped with two FAWDS to process all of the non-food combustible solid waste generated with sufficient system redundancy. The US Navy has been jointly developing the PAWDS with PyroGenesis Inc. over the last 6 years. The development efforts in 2004 and 2005 coupled with lessons learned from operation aboard Carnival's cruise ship have resulted in the identification of additional process and design improvements. Source emission testing by an independent laboratory has also demonstrated that the PAWDS easily meets IMO MARPOL requirements for the destruction of solid waste.
Metabolic flux analysis with measurement data from 13C tracer experiments has been an important approach for exploring metabolic networks. Though various methods were developed for 13C positional enrichment or isotopo...

In this paper, a new approach to Fault Detection and Diagnosis that is based on Correspondence Analysis is proposed. Correspondence analysis is a powerful multivariate technique based on the generalized singular value decomposition. The advantage of using correspondence analysis is that it depicts rows as well as columns as points in the dual lower dimensional vector space. Correspondence analysis has been shown to capture association between various features and events quite exoectively. In this paper, the correspondence analysis approach is used for Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) and is validated on representative process systems.

A control-relevant parameter estimation algorithm is developed in this paper for curvefitting empirical transfer function estimates (ETFEs) with orthogonal (i.e., zippered) frequency grids to discrete-time parametric matrix fraction description models. Such ETFEs arise from DFT analysis of identification data generated from constrained, plant-friendly multisine inputs as developed by the authors' previous work. This curvefitter minimizes model estimation error using pre/post frequency-dependent weighting matrices as functions of the closed-loop dynamics. The control-relevant multivariable parameter estimation procedure is illustrated with an example case study based on the Shell heavy oil fractionator problem.
A new control method of model free control based on gradient estimation is proposed in this paper. The dynamic system is embedded in a linear model set. Based on the embedded property of the dynamic system, an optimal...
